MASSAGING IMPLEMENT.
menses.
Application filed Apri1 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownlthat I, Asa H, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lvfassaging Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention. has relation to an improved massaging implement and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character whereby the circulation of the blood may be accelerated or promoted by heating or pounding various parts of the body.
The invention has for a further object to provide a device of this character, which in its construction is extremely simple, may be produced and sold at comparatively small cost, and is highly reliable and efficient for the purposes in view.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an implement for self treatment whereby a person may massage every part of his own body, without requiring the assistance of a physician or skilled masseur.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved massaging implement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a rubber tube which is preferably about sixteen inches in length and one and one-quarter inches in exterior diameter. This tube is adapted to be filled with raw cotton indicated at 6. The rubber tube 5 is covered with a fabric, preferably woven cotton cloth as shown at 7. said covering be ing built up or made thicker upon one side of the tube 5 than on the other as indicated at 8. A final outer covering or sleeve 9 preferably of wool is then drawn over this outer cotton covering. The end of this sleeve is Specification of Letters Patent.

drawn together or tightly closed in any de sired manner as shown at 10.
The implement above described is employed in practical use by pounding upon the muscles of the body. The device is sufficientlyfirm to occasion the necessary jar or shock by its impact with the body. The device, is however, sufficiently soft and yielding so that the same will not bruise the parts which are struck thereby, even by a hard blow. By building up the cotton fabric covering 8 upon one side of the rubber tube, the shock or jar caused by the impact of the tube against the body may be regulated by simply turning the implement in the hand, so as to dispose either the thick or relatively thin portion of said tube covering to the part struck thereby.
My improved massaging implement will be supplied to the trade with three of the mitted woolen sleeves 9, which are of varying degrees of thickness and softness. It will be manifest that by employing any one of these several sleeves. the impression upon the body by the impact of the implement therewith may be regulated. These sleeves may be readily removed from the body of the implement and laundricd, thus maintaining the device at all times in a clean and sanitary condition. The softening of one side of the implement to a greater extent than the other may also be accomplished by either thickening the wall of any one of the coierings on one side or by inserting a softening or cushioning strip between the coverings. It is. however, to be understood that the device may be manufactured either with walls of uniform thickness or of greater thickness on one side than on the other.
From the foregoing description takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that the construction. manner of use and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood.
These several desirable advantages. T obtain by an implement which is exceedingly simple in its construction and may be retailed at small cost.
The invention is of course susceptible of many minor modifications in the materials employed and also in its form and proportions, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate modifications as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
1. An implement of the character de scribed including a rubber tube packed with a soft yielding material, a fabric covering for said tube, and a Woolen outer sleeve to receive the tube and its covering.
2. An implement of the character described including a rubber tube packed With a soft yielding material a fabric covering for said tube having a relatively thick portion on one side of the tube, and an outer fabric sleeve to receive the tube and its covering.
3. A1 implement of the character described including a rubber tube packed with a soft yielding material, and a fabric cover -ng for said tube having a relatively thick portion on one side of the tube.
4-. An implement of the character described comprising a rubber tube packed with a soft yielding material, a fabric covering for said tube, said covering being relatively thick upon one side of the tube and gradually decreasing in thickness to the opposite side thereof, and an outer Woolen sleeve to receive said tube and its covering.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
