To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK Snnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Attachments for Umbrellas and Canes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and canes, and has for its object to provide means permanently attached to and carried with the umbrella or cane for locking the same to any suitable fixture at any place where the owner is obliged to leave them, thus preventing removal of the property by unauthorized persons.

A further object is to provide a locking means of this kind which can be entirely inclosed in the handle of the umbrella or cane when not in use, and which can also be conveniently taken out and secured to a fixture which may happen to be at hand.

Another object is to provide an umbrella or cane with locking means of the kind referred to which does not alter the appearance of the stick or handle to which it is attached when such locking means is not in use.

Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claim at the end of the de scription.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used throughout the several views to designate corresponding parts :-Figure 1 is a side ele ration of the upper end or handle of the stick attached to an umbrella or cane, the same being equipped with my invention, the

- chain and lock being housed in said handle.

Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a broken view on an enlarged scale showing the storing cavity in the handle in longitudinal section and open with the end of the chain and lock attached thereto removed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the end of an umbrella or cane handle of a common form. In carryin out my invention, a cavity B is formed in the end of said handle, and such cavity preferably lined with a metal cone 0 which is retained in place by a pin or rivet D passed through the handle and an inner reduced end of the conical lining. To this pin or rivet is permanently attached a chain E of such length as may be necessary or desirable. To the outer end of the chain an ordinary lock F is attached. The chain is also preferably provided with a branch chain or series of links G permanently connected at one end to the main chain at a point intermediate of its ends and preferably near its outer end.

i /hen the chain and lock are stored in the cavity B, the latter may be closed by a pivoted cover plate H, which is preferably swivelcd at K so as to turn in the plane of the end of the handle, and is provided with a projection L adapted to snap into locking engagement with a small socket M in the end of the handle, as clearly illustrated in Fig. When the locking means is thus stored away and the cover plate closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 9, the appearance of the handle is not materially or noticeably diiii'erent from an ordinary handle not fitted with my locking attaclnncnt, the ends of the single rivet D being hardly perceptible and the cover plate resembling a name plate such as are commonly used and for which additional purpose said cover plate may also be used if desired.

When the locking, device is to be used, it is only necessary to turn the cover plate to open position, as shown in Fig. 3, withdraw the outer end portion of the chain with the lock attached, pass the end of the main chain or the branch chain, or both around a convenient fixture. and connect the ends of the main and branch chains together by means of the lock.
