OLOF I-I. JACOBSON, OF KANsAs CITY, MISSURI.
ADJUSTABLE 'l'OOL-HANDLE.
7\ To all 1071 om it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF H. JACOBSON,
a citizen of Sweden, residing at Kansas i City, in the county of Jackson and State of' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Adjnstable Tool- Handles, of which-the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable tool handles, and my object 'is to provide a device of this character for holding files, chisels, and other tools having` a i tang to receive my handle. i
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of a file and my handle in position thcreon. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line II-II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line III--III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a cross section on line IV--IV of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the chuck members employed in carrying out the invention.
A, designates a file of ordinary Construction` provided at one end With the usual tang B. a
1 designates my handle which is of holloW Construction to receive the adiustable means for firmly gripping files of different sizes. Handle l` is reinforced at its forward end With a ferrule 2,` provided at one side With an internal resilient detent 3, one end of which projects forwardly through saidyferrule and is bent at right angles to constitute a finger piece 4, whereby it may be retracted against the side of the ferrule, as Will hereinafter appear. Detent 3 coacts With a ratchet-wheel 5, rotatablymounted in the forward end of the ferrule 2 and having a slot 6 for the passage of the tang B. The teeth 3, of the ratchet-wheel 5, overlap the inner surface of a marginal fiange 2 of the ferrule 2, and thus hold said ratchet-Wheel in the ferrule.
7 designates a chuck bearingat one end against the ratchet-wheel 5 and at' its opposite end against the closed rear end 8 of the handle 1. Chuck 7 consists of a pair i of members 9 having tapercd Channels 10, to receive the tang B.
11 designates a resilient clamping member, preferably, in the form of a coil spring embracing` the chuck members 9. The clamping member 11, is Secured at one end to one of said chuck members and at its Specification of Letters Patent.

opposite end to a member 12 `countersunk in one side of the handle 1. V
In practice, the tang B of the file, or other tool, is inserted in the channel of the chuck members `9 as far as possible and then rotated in a direction to nnwind the spring 11, so` that the tang 13 may be pushed :Farther into the channel 10. After the tang B has been inserted practicallv its entire length, the file is rotated 'in the opposite direction to Wind the spring 11, so that it Will cause the chuck-members 9 to firmly grip the tang and reliably secure it in the handle. While the file is being rotatecl to nwind or Wind the spring 11, the detent 3 is held out of engagement `with the ratchet-whecl 5, but after the spring has been Wound `as above described, it is secured against accideutal unwinding by releasing the detent 3 and permitting it to i enter one of the peripheral notches 13 of said ratchet-Wheel 5.
By employing a resilient clamping member to control the chuck members 9, the latter are permitted to accommodate them-` selves to tangs oi' difierent sizes and shapes and thus firmly grip said tangs, so that the tools Will be firmly held from Wabbling or moving independently of the handle when the spring is Wound as above described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described, consisting of a handle, a plural piece tool holder arranged in said handle, a helical spring embraeing said tool holder and adapted to cause the same to firmly grip a tool When the latter is rotated to wind the sp-ingmnd means to secure said spring in wound condition.
2. A clevice of the character described, consisting of a handle, a plural piece tool holder arranged in said handle, and a coil so y,
spring embracing said tool holder and sei holder arranged in said handle, a coiled` clamping member embracing said tool` holder to cause the same to firmly grip a.
tool when the latter is rotated to wind said clamping member, a ratchet wheel to pre- Vent accidental unwinding of said'clamp ing member, and means to' secure said ratchet wheel from accdental rotation.
4. A devce of the character descrihecl,
consisting of a handle, a two-piece chuck' in, a pIuraI piece chuck in said handle, a c'oil spring embracng said chuck to cause it to firmly grip a tool when the same is rot ated to wind the spring, a ratchet wheel hearing against the opposite end of the chuck and provided with a slot to admit one end of a tool to said chuck, a ferrule Secured to one end of the hanclle and lapping the ratchet wheel to hold the same in position, and a dctent coactng with said retchet wheel.
` I In testmony whereof I aflii my signature, in the presence of two witnesses. i
