Description
TINITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
ARTHUR L. SMITH, OF OKMULGEE, OKLAHOMA.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914:.
To all whom it concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Okmulgce, in the county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paint, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coating compositions, and more particularly to a fire and rust proof mineral paint.
It is the object of this invention to pro vide a coatingcomposition or paint particularly advantageous for coating metal structures which will protect the metal work so coated from rust, will not crack or scale off from heat caused by fire or sun, and will also protect the metal work from the effects of steam. This coating composition or paint is particularly advantageous for coating the fire boxes and boilers of locomotives and other engines, as well as all other metal works subjected to dampness and heat.
The paint comprising this invention is composed of the followingingredients in the following proportions: gallons coal tar, 5 gallons asphalt-varnish, 5 gallons turpentine, 15 pounds ground asbestos, 6 pounds yellow ocher, 6 pounds Spanish whiting, 6 gallons water, 10 pounds wood aslies (screened), 2 pounds crude caustic soc a. i
The ingredients are mixed in the following manner: First. Mix together coal tar, caustic soda and asphalt-varnish thoroughly Serial No. 695,365.
so as to blend as one material. Second. In another vessel mix turpentine, ground asbestos, yellow ocher and Spanish whiting to a smooth creamy like substance; add to first combination of coal tar, caustic soda and asphalt-varnish, all thoroughly blended. Third. In the third vessel add water and wood ashes, mix thoroughly and add to other mixture, stirring until all are thoroughly mixed.
The coal ta rs render the paint water proof. Caustic soda takes away the acids of the different ingredients and adds materially to the strength and elasticity of the paint. Asphalt-varnish helps to form a body to the paint and at the same time is a good filler for the roofs. Turpentine is used as a partial thinner and also to cause the paint to dry more quickly. Ground asbestos, yellow ocher, Spanish whiting and wood ashes render the paint fire, water and rust proof and add to the thickness or body of the paint.
\Vhnt I claim is:
A paint composed of a mixture of the following ingredients in the following proportions, coal tar fifty gallons, asphalt-varnish five gallons, turpentine five gallons, ground asbestos fifteen pounds, yellow ocher six pounds, Spanish whiting six pounds, water six gallons, screened wood ashes ten pounds and crude caustic soda two pounds;
