IT all whom it may concern STAFFORD, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Flexible Stay-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in flexible stay bolts.
The inspection of stay bolts within fixed periods, is mandatory, and to inspect and test them the heads of the bolts must be exposed for tapping and turning.
With stay bolts now in use, the head of the bolt is mounted in a sleeve and 1s covered by a cap secured to the sleeve. The
. pressure of the head of the bolt against the inside of the sleeve tends to bulge or expand the'latter, thus causing the cap to stick.
Again the formation of rust on the threads connecting the cap and sleeve retards removal of the cap, hence it is usually necessary to loosen the cap by striking it with a hammer which frequently results in fracture or injury to the cap or sleeve. Again when the cap is stuck fast, the efforts to unscrew it result at times in loosening up the connection between the sleeve and the outer sheet of the boiler.
The object of the present invention is to provide for the quick and ready inspection of the stay bolt proper without danger of injury to the parts in which the head of the bolt is mounted, and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section of my improvement and Fig. 2 is a View in plan of the same.

- The ring 10 is threaded internally for the .80 when the-parts are assembled the ring 10 attachment of the plug 11, the inner end of which is preferably concaved and provided with rounded edges or periphery as shown, which latter is covered by a spun brass or copper gasket 12 secured to the inner end of the plug 11, by bending it up and around the rounded edge of the plug, thus forming curved bearing edge which, when the parts are assembled bears against the annular inclined seat 13 formed at the outer edge of the sleeve just within the outer end of the latter. The plug 11 is provided in its outer face with an angular recess or holes for the attachment of a suitable tool for rotating it in the ring.
When the parts are assembled in operative position, the ring and its plug are locked against the end of the sleeve as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. To expose the head for inspection of the bolt, the plug is turned in a direction to ease up the pressure of its rear end against the seat 13, thus withdrawing 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for be turned out of the path of the sleeve, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. After the bolt has been tested, the parts may be again locked by turning the ring down and securing it to the sleeve bythe pin, and then by screwing in the plug the parts will be locked and the bolt head housing sealed. When necessary or desirable, the ring 10 may be disconnected from the sleeve by simply removing both pins 14, or the upper ortion of the sleeve carrying the ring may .e, separate from the sleeve and screwed thereto, as illustrated by the dotted threads shown in Fig. 1.
I would have it understood that the particular means shown for securing the ring to the sleeve are unimportant, hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the details shown except as required by the scope of the claims.

l. In a flexible stay bolt construction, the
combination of a sleeve adapted for attachment to a boiler sheet and having a seat for a stay bolt head, a member adapted for removable attachment to the sleeve and a movable plug carried by said member and adaptcombination of a sleeve adapted for attachment to a boiler sheet and having a seat for a stay bolt head, a ring hinged to the sleeve and a movable plug carried by said ring and adapted to closethe outer end of the sleeve.
3. In a flexible stay bolt construction, the combination of a sleeve adapted for attachment to a boiler sheet and having a seat for a stay bolt head and a seat for an end closure, a ring removably attached to said sleeve and a screw plug carried by said ring and adapted to bear against said shoulder and form the outer end closure for the sleeve.
4. In flexible stay bolt construction, the combination of a sleeve adapted forattachment to a boiler sheet and having a seat for a stay bolt head, a ring having hinged connection with the end of the sleeve and Ya screw plug carried by the ring and adapted to close the outer end of the sleeve.
5. In flexible stay bolt construction, the combination of a sleeve having a seat, and a screw plug having a soft metal facing permanently secured thereto for contact with said seat on the sleeve for closing the outer end of same.
6. In flexible stay bolt construction, the
combination of a sleeve having an inclined seat, a ring movably secured to the outer end of the sleeve and a screw plug carried by said ring and provided with a soft metal facing adapted to make contact with the inclined seat in the sleeve.
7 In a flexible stay bolt construction, the combination of a sleeve adapted for attachment to a boiler sheet, and having a seat for a stay bolt head, a member movably attached to the outer end of the sleeve and a plug carried by said movable member and adapted to form the outer closure of the sleeve.
