Description
lJNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE F. TAPLEY, OF SPRINGFIELI), MASSACHUSETTS.
lMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent No. l 11,856, dated February 14, 187i.
. To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JEssE F. TAPLEY, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bill and Letter Files; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of refercn ce marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a pla-n view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same as folded together; and Fig. 3 is another end View, showingits position when filled with letters or bills.
My invention relates to a device for filing bills or letters to keep them in place and in the order in which they are placed, and in such manner that any particular one may be withdrawn without materially disturbing the others, and whereby the papers filed therein are protected from the accumulation of dust.
That others skilled in the art may be able to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same and its use.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view, in which A C C are rectangular pieces of pasteboard, the middle piece, A, being of suitable length and of about the Width that it is desired to fold the letters, the side pieces, C, being somewhat narrower and of the samelength as the central piece, A. 'Ihese pieces are all laid side by side, leaving a space, B, between the middle piece and the side pieces, C. The three pieces are then covered by pasting a strip of suitable paper, sufficiently strong, and which should be a little larger than the strips of pasteboard, as laid together, so that the edges of the paper may be neatly folded over` the edges to the back side of the boards and 4face of the boards and paper.
pasted down. A sheet of paper is then pasted over the back side, covering nearly all the sur- The file is then ready for use.
With an elastic band or string passed around the device it will securely hold a single paper, and as others may be added from time to time the ileXible sides B will accommodate themselves to the size of the package as it increases until it assumes the shape shown in Fig. 3. The package, with the le encircling it, may then be put away for future reference, and when so put away the file encircles and protects the whole package so perfectly, especially at the sides, that the accummulation of dust upon the papers and the injury of the same by handling is wholly prevented.
These iiles may be manufactured so very cheaply that their cost will not prevent their being put away with the papers for preserving them, and a new one used to commence another package, whereas those now generally used are too expensive to attach one to each package, and, for the same relative expense of manufacture, do not so well protect the papersv from injury.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism
As a new article of manufacture, an improved bill and letter file, consisting of the rigid or stiff portions A C and the flexible sides B, the same being used in combination with an elastic band, all constructed and ar ranged substantially as herein described.
JESSE F. TAPLEY.
