CARL MILLER, OF SHENANDOAH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-POCKET FOR TROUSERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 24, 1913. Serial No. 808,589.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL MILLER, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of Shenandoah, in the county of Schuylkill,
ing a garment of neat appearance.
Another object of the invention is to employ the pocket closure flap as a keeper for the belt and to provide the upper edge of said flap with fastening devices securing it in place over said belt. 7
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference will indicate corresponding parts in both the views, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the upper rear part of a pair of trousers provided with my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The several parts of the device may be made of any suitable materials, and the relative sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention,
hereinafter more fullyset forth and specifically claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detail description of the construction, I show at 10 the rear or seat portion of a pair of trousers of. any approved design, the same being provided with a pair of hip pockets 11. The main pocket as usual depends within the portion: 10. Instead, however, of having an open or un-. protected mouthior flap for the upper part of the pocket, I provide a flap. 12 stitched neatly along its: lower edge at 13 to the outer edge of what would ordinarily be the mouth of the Fig. 2. Said flap may have an inner lining or facing 12 11 of the pocket, if desired.
The trousers are shownprovided with a waistband 15 having a facing 15, both of the Waistband parts beingstitched at 16 to the upper edge of the main part of the fabric. Any suitable number or location of keepers 17 may be provided to carry a belt 18.
In the closed position, as shown at the left side of Fig. 1, the upper edge 12 of the flap is secured along the upper edge of the waistband by any suitable temporary fasteners such as snap buttons 19 and 20, leaving the outer face of the pocket and its flap perfectly smooth and rendering the pocket not only invisible but incapable of access by a stranger without attracting the wearers attention. the belt adjacent the pocket and might in some instances take the place of the usual belt keepers 17. Proper access to the pocket may, of course, be had by unfastening the upper edge of the flap, the flap dropping,
as shown in the right portion of Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and thereafter the flap may be closed and secured as above described. From my practical experience I have demonstrated that this improvement may be easily incorporated in a pair of trousers and adds little expense thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein described hip pocket construction for mens trousers, the same comprising the combination with the main fabric having a waistband, of a pocket construction having an opening below the waistband and including a flap stitched along the upper outer edge of the pocket proper adjacent the lower edge of the PatentedNov. 24, 1914.
pocket, as indicated at 14,.
corresponding to the facing Said flap also covers waistband and movable upwardly into closing position, and fastening devices secured to the upper edge thereof adjacent the upper edge of the waistband.
2. The combination with a pair of trousers and a belt carried thereby, of a safety pocket including a flap secured permanently along the edge of the pocket below and parallel to the lower. edge of the belt,
and fastening devices for securing the upper name to this specification in the presence egg'e off the flap removaloly1 to the1 upper of two subscribing Witnesses.
