of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State pf New York, have new and useful Improvements in Indicators for Film-Magazines, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in m magazines for moving picture machines and has for its object to provide a magazine of this character in which it may be readily determined, without opening the door of the magazine, whether or not the reel is being properly driven to receive and wind the film.
In moving picture machines-as. at present constructed the film bearing the successively aken pictures is fed through the projecting mechanism from one reel to another, the lower reel being continuously driven to wind the film. As the film is highly inflammable it is the practice, and in many places 'a statutory requirement, to inclose the reels in fireproof magazines which must be kept closed during the operation of the machine. The driving mechanism for the film reel is usually tension controlled to wind the film evenly and to prevent an injurious strain being put on the fragile films, and it sometimes happens that the reel will stick or the drive will slip and not rotate thereel, in which case the film will pile up betweemthe magamechanism stopping the machine and damaging the-film, whereas if the operator had been able to tell immediately when the winding stopped, the fail ure could be speedily corrected without danger or damage.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an indicator 'for the purpose stated which will be thoroughly reliable in action, which will cost little to manufacture, and which can be applied to without change in their construction .-and without interference with their working parts. I

Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the magazine ,which is preferably formed of sheet metal and which issuspend- .ed'from the base of the machine indicated at 2. The magazine is provided with a reel shaft 3 projecting through the side wall of the magazine, and to the end of the shaft is attached a slip pulley 4, whose tension is controlled by a spring indicated at 5. The film 6 passes through a slot in the top wall 0 the magazine and is wound on the reel 7 within the magazine. The reel is slip ed over the free end of the shaft and locked in place by atongue 8 which is pivoted in a slit in the end of the shaft and turned to a position perpendicul shaft to hold the reel in ticularly shown in Fig. 3.

When the door 9 is closed none of the moving parts of the mechanism is visible to the operator, his operating crank being on the same side of the machine as'the door of the magazine. My indicator is mounted on the door 9 and comprises a sleeve 10 having a flange 11 which is attached to the middle of the door with the bore of the sleeve in line with the magazine shaft. The operation of the device is obvious from the above description. A glance of the operator without moving from his usual position, will show whether or not the winding mechanism is functioning properly. The indicator requires no attention whatsoever. It sets itself whenever the door is closed and is out of the way when the door is open. I

Having thus described my invention,'what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. The combination of a fireproof magazine, for moving picture machines, a door forming one side of said magazine, an 1nd1-- cator mounted on said door and having an operating part pro1ecting into the interior of said magazine through a closely fitted bearing, a winding reel supported in said magazine, and a driving connection between said reel and said operating part.
2.-The combination of a magazine for moving picture films having a door adapted to close the magazine, a winding reel within the magazine,an indicator carried by the door of the magazine and having operative 1 connection with the winding reel when the door is closed.
3. The combination of a magazine for moving picture films having a door adapted to close the magazine, a winding reel within the magazine and an. indicator carried by the door and comprising a :mounted in the shaft rotatably, door and having a driving connection with thewinding reel when the door is closed.
4. The combination of a magazine for moving picture films, having a door adapted to. close the magazine, a winding reel shaft within the magazine, a tension drive for such shaft, an indicator carried by the door of the magazine and having driving con nection with said shaft when the door is closed.
5. The combination of a magazine for moving picture films, a winding shaft there;- in having a locking tongue for the film reel at its free end, a door adapted to close said magazine, and an indicator carried by said door and comprising a shaft in line with said winding shaft and having a driving crank adapted to project/into the path of movement of said tongue when said door is closed.
