.Be it known that I, Grenen AMHURS un` mns, at Woodville, in the county of Lincoln and 5 Statcof lVest Virginia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sawing `Staves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines for sawing staves and has relation more particularly to a machine of this general character wherein the carriage for holding the work is manually operated may beimparted to the carriage, after af `cutting operation, in substantially an auto- 'matic manner. i p
The invention consists in the details `of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe` several parts of my irnproved machine whereby certain important `advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less `expensive and other` l wise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. i
The novel features ofthe invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the het ter understood, I will now proceed tofde` scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is an elevational view of a stave cutting machine containing an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View in top plan of one extremity of the track-way, with a part in section, illustrating in detail certain features of my invention as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a supporting frame of any j ordinary or preferred construction on which is operatively supported the cylindrical saw 2 of any ordinary or preferred construction and the reciprocating carriage 3 which serves its purpose and which is adapted to be `forced toward the cylindrical saw 2 manually, as is now generally done in machines of this general character.

To further increase the action of the buffermember 8, I find it of advantage to have the uppermost bolt memberG 4projected forwardly of the butl'er member 8 and having.;

The bolt 6 is also surrounded by an expansible member 10 in? terposed between the buffer member 8 and the standard 5 and serves as an equalizer spring whereby the buffer member 8 will be normally maintained insubstantially a vertical positiomas indicated in Fig. .1.
At the forward end of the frame 1 between the track-way 4, I position the bumper block 14 which is adapted to be engaged by the forward end of the carriage 3 when the same is being automatically rc-4 turned under the iniluence of the buffer `member 8. The block 14, as herein disclosed,
is operatively connected with the upper end of the vertically disposed arm 16 hingedly connected at its lower end, as at 15, to a horizontal beam 17 which is also engaged by the vertical member 18 depending from the frame l. Slidably disposed through the vertical member 18 andthe hinged arm 16 is the rod 19, the opposite ends whereof being provided with the enlargements 20,'
and-interposed between each of the enlargements 20 and the hinged memberl and the vertical member 18, respectively, are the -expansible members 21, herein disclosed as coil springs. By this arrangement, it will bey seen that the block 14k serves as a buiier for the carriage 3 and its return movement A and the tension thereon created by the eX- pansible members 21 serve to facilitate the forward movement of the carriage whereby it will be readily perceived that an increased number of reciprocations may be imparted i to the carriage y3 in comparison with the general ymethod' wherein the movements of theA carriage are created manually.
From the foregoing description7 it is thought to be obvious that a machine constructed in accordance with my invention is of anextremely simple and comparatively inexpensivev nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will .also be obvious that my invention is susceptibleof some change and modication without material departure from i theprinoiples and spirit thereof and/for this; reason I dov not wish to be understood asl limiting myself to the precise arrange'- ment'l and' formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
