Specification of Letters Patent. Pzttent(TNOHZL, 1914.
Application filed December 5, 19.12. Serial No. 735,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. DANIELS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved gate and operating means therefor, the invention having for its primary object to produce an improved construction of supporting base for the gate, having great stability when arranged in position for use while at the same time said base may be easily and quickly transported from place to place.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved manner of mounting and connecting the gate structure whereby the same may be compactly arranged for convenience in transportation.
Still another object of the invention is to produce a simple, efficient and durably constructed farm gate which may be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a farm gate embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view, the gate being shown in its open position; Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section illustrating the manner of mounting the gate upon its supporting base; Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the base folded. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the gate in open position. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating certain details of my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the central section of a base bar to which the oppositely extending arms or end sections 6 are hingedly connected as indicated at 7. The central section of this base has its upper surface notched or recessed as shown at 8 to receive a similarly recessed or reduced portion 9 of a platform 10 which is arranged across the road and is preferably embedded therein. It will of course be understood thatthe base sections 5 and 6 extendlongitudinally of the road at one side thereof. The base section 5 is provided with a stud 11 which is adapted to be i received in an opening 12 formed in the platform 10. The platform 10 is preferably constructed of concrete though it will be understood that wood or metal maybe employed if desired.
A metal plate 13 is suitably secured to the' under side of the reduced portion 9 of the base 10 and has its ends upwardly projected at the opposite edges of the base to produce ears 14. These ears are apertured to receive a pintle 15. The gate 16 which is of the ordinary form and consistsof aplurality of longitudinal bars connected by vertical brace bars arranged upon the opposite sides thereof, has secured to one end the strap plates 17. The lower ends of these plates are laterally extended and terminate at their outer ends in enlargements 18 which are provided with openings to loosely receive the pintle 15. It will thus be seen that the gate is mounted to rock freely upon said pintle as it is swung to its open position in the manner to be later set forth.
Upon one end of the platform 10 the post 19 is arranged, and the inner face of this post is provided adjacent to its up er end with a suitable latch device to secure the swinging gate in its closed position. Upon the other end of the platform 10, the post 28 is secured having a suitable guide pulley mounted in its upper end for a weightedcord or cable. The operating means for the gate may be of any ordinary or approved construction, but the same preferably includes operating ropes or cables which pass over guide pulleys arranged upon the upper ends of the vertical standards 3lwhich are suitably secured at their lower ends to the several sections of the gate supporting A base.
In the shipment of the gate, the arms 6 0f the base are folded with relation to the'intermediate section 5 thereof as shown in Fig. f of the drawings, so that the same together with the gate proper and the posts may be compactly arranged for convenience in transportation. After extending the base sections and properly arranging the same at the side of the road, the platform 10 is arranged upon said base to extend across the road in the manner above described. It will be apparent, that owing to the sectional construction of the base and the removable mounting of the gate platform 10 thereon, the gate and its support may be easily and quickly moved from one place to another.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. As the device consists of but few parts which are of simple form, it will be further apparent that the invention can be manufactured at small cost. It will be obvious that my improved gate structure. may be greatly modified in the form, proportions and materials employed in the construction of the several elements without departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus lescribed the invention, what is claimed is:
A gate support comprising a base consisting of a central section, end sections hingedly connected to the central section and foldable toward each other in a horizontal plane, coacting means carried by the sections for holding the same in alinement, said central section being recessed in its upper face substantially midway of its length a platform adapted to be removably fitted in said recess, a stud carried by the base of the recess in the central section adapted to be received in a recess in the under face of the platform, the upper face of the platform being substantially flush with the upper face of the central base section when in assenr bled osition, upstanding plates fixed to the portions of the sides of the platform accommodated within the recess in the central base section, and a gate positioned be tween such upstanding plates and in pivotal engagement therewith.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
