To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drill, in the county of Russell and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drilling machines particularly designed for mining use, the object of the invention being to provide a mining drill which is simple and inexpensive of construction and adapted to be easily operated to drill a hole of maximum depth, within a minimum period of time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mining drill in which gearing for simultaneously rotating the drill bit and feeding it forward is of simple construction and adapted to be operated by hand or other power, said gearing being mounted upon a carriage which vertically adjustable to regulate the working elevation of the bit.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a drilling machine which is compact in character and can readily be taken apart for storage or transportation.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mining drilling machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a horizontal transverse section on the line l-i of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the supporting bracket for the drill carrier frame. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the upright or main frame showing the detachable guide bar removed for the release of the bracket.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide an upright or main frame 1 having a roughened or spurred lower end 2 for antislipping engagement with the floor, and provided at its upper end or head portion with a threaded opening 3 receiving a threaded stem 1 carrying at its upper end an anchoring spur 5 adjustable by means of a hand wheel 6, said spur being adapted for engagement with the ceiling of the mine cham ber, whereby the machine may be firmly fixed in working position wherever required. The body of the upright 1 is cut away to provide a guide slot 7 and a fixed front guide wall 8, and the rear face of said upright is cut away to form recesses 9 to receive the ends of a rear guide bar 10, which closes the rear side of said slot, which bar 10 cooperates with the bar 8 to form a guide way for a vertically adjustable bracket 11 having grooves 12 to receive and engage said bars.
The bracket consists of a block or frame of oblong rectangular form and is provided with a series of sockets 13 adapted to receive a locking pin 14 disposed upon the bar 10, whereby the bracket may be supported at different elevations to vary the working elevation of the drill bit. The bracket is provided with horizontal transverse guide openings 15 for the passage of the upper and lower parallel side bars of an open oblong rectangular drill carrier f 'ame 16. Extending longitudinally of and journaled in suitable bearings in said frame is a drive shaft 17 adapted for connection at its rear end with an electric motor 18 or other operating device, and carrying a drive gear or pinion 19. The forward end of the shaft 17 is provided with a chuck or socket 20 to receive the drill bit 21, which may be of any preferred construction and which receives direct motion from the shaft 17. The pinion 20 meshes with a gear on the gear end of a feed shaft 28 having threads 24: working through a threaded passage 25 in the supporting bracket, said threads having a feeding pitch commensurate with the cutting capacity of the bit, so that as the bit is revolved and cuts into the coal or other mineral the carriage will be moved forward to advance the bit to its work.
In practice, the motor 18 is held in the hand or otherwise suitably held against rotation about its armature shaft. If desired the motor may be provided with a handle bar 1S whereby it may be conveniently held.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that in the use of the machine the main frame or upright is fixed in position between the floor and roof of the chamber adjacent to the breast, and the drill operated to work into the breast, and it will be evident that the structure disclosed provides a drilling machine which may be easily and conveniently operated and which is light in weight but will enable a bore to be quickly drilled. The carriage may be moved for- Ward to its Work or moved backward to retract the drill bit in an obvious manner, and it will be seen that the elevation of the drill bit may be varied by adjusting the carriage and supporting the bracket up or down. Upon detaching the guide bar 10 the bracket and carriage may be released from the main frame or upright, thus enabling the parts to be easily and conveniently disassembled for transportation from place to place, and as easily and quickly assembled for use.
I claim A mine drilling machine comprising an upright having means for fixing it in position between the base and ceiling of a mine chamber said upright having a guide slot open at its rear side and having its front Wall forming a guide bar, the rear surface of the upright being provided With recesses adjacent the ends of the slot, a rear guide bar engaging said recesses, fastening desaid guide bar in diiferent positions of ad- 30 gustment, a carriage slidably mounted on the bracket, and a drive shaft mounted on the carriage and provided with means for holding a drill bit, a feed shaft journaled on the carriage and in thread-ed engagement 35 with the bracket, and gearing for simultaneously operating said shafts.
