DRIVING DEVICE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed October 17, 1910. Serial No. 587,601.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Janos ADRIAN, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Oberursel, near Frankfort-on the Main, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in driving or power transmission devices in which the prime driver is a lever actuated by a cam. In driving devices of this character it has been commonly necessary to employ cams of large diameter, but as the circumferential velocity of such cams increases with increase in diameter of the cam disks and it is dangerous to have such velocity exceed a certain limit, it has been heretofore impossible to employ cam disks which did not have a comparatively low velocity.
The object of the present invention is to provide a construction by which the actuating cam may be given a much higher ve locity than those commonly employed.
'I' he drawing illustrates one embodiment of the invention adapted for driving the needle of a shoe sewing machine.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a cam disk Which is mounted. on a suitable driving shaft 2 and provided in one face with a cam groove 5. A roller stud 4 on a lever 3 works within the cam groove 5 and at one end said lever is connected with a toothed actuator bar 10 that meshes with a gear sector 12 supported on a bearing 11 and carrying the curved needle 13. As shown the pivot or fulcrum of the lever 3 is connected by a vertically guided rod 6 with an arm 7 adapted to be oscillated by an eccentric 9 on a driving shaft 8.
The 'parts are so arranged that the fulerum of the lever is moved vertically by the action of the eccentric 9 while the body of the lever is being rocked about such fulcrum by the action of the cam, the direction in which the fulcrum is thus moved at any instant being opposite that in which the disk 1 is then moving the lever. 4
Copica oi this patent may be obtained for Having thus described the invention What is claimed is, 1. In a power drive mechanism, the combination of an actuator 10, a lever connected with the actuator, a rotary cam acting upon the lever between its fulcrum and the actuator, and means for moving the lever fulcrum simultaneously with the actuation of the lever by the cam and in a direction 0p posite that in which the cam moves the lever.
2. In a power drive mechanism, the combination of a lever, a rotary cam engaging the lever at one side of its fulcrum, and an eccentric acting to shift the lever fulcrum simultaneously with the movement of the lever by said cam and in a direction opposite that in which-the lever is moved by the cam.
8. In a power drive mechanism, the com bination of a lever having its fulcrum adjacent one end, a rotary cam engaging the lever at an intermediate point in its length to rock it about the fulcrum, an eccentric adapted to positively move the fulcrum simultaneously with the rocking of the lever by said cam and in a direction opposite that in which the latter moves the lever.
4. In a power drive mechanism, the combination of a lever, a rotary cam engaging the lever and adapted to rock it about the fulcrum, an eccentric, and a link connected with the fulcrum support of the lever and engaging the eccentric, the latter being so related to the cam that the fulcrum of the' lever will be positively shifted as the lever J AKOB ADRIAN.
