Description
a la e. enana. er nommant View, @anaemia can seaman man' salen Spemication of lettera Bailanta Patented-Nev MD, ddii-4i..
Application filed Apri126, 1913. Serial No. 768,895.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, HARRY O. KENWOR- 'rniq'a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain View, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can Openers and Seals, of which the fol*- lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted for use upon the top of a can, such as a condensed milk can, for the purpose of puncturing the same to form vent and outlet openings and to seal said openings when desired, the object of the invention being to provide adeviceof this character which is simple of construction and inexpensive of productiomradapted for use as a permanent attachment upon the top of the canin such manner as to avoid interference withI the packing of the can, and capable of being readily and conveniently manipulated to perform the described functions.
The invention consists ofthe features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure l is a top plan v iewof a can showing the application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the upper portion of the can showing the device as arranged prior to puncturing the can. Fig.` 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the device as arranged for use to seal the formed punctures in the can top.
Referring to the drawing, 1 body and 2 thedepressed top of a can' of the characterV described, which top is made lin the usual manner of thin metal adapted to be readily punctured.
Arranged upon the outer face of the top 2 is my improved puncturing and sealing device which is formed of spring metal and comprises a body or central ortion 3 having oppositely extending s ightly bowed spring arms 4 terminating at their free ends in punches 5.
The body or central portion 3 Yis perforated A'for the passage of a pin or rivet 6 hav-r in headed ends 7, a washer 8 being preferab y disposed between the body 3 and upper head 7 to relieve the rivet from objectionable strain in the manipulations of 'the device. The shank of the rivet extends down through the top of the can and with designates the.
low or within the plane of the can rim, thus allowing the can to be packed for shipment with other cans in such manner as to permit the cans to be arranged in abutting relation without interference from the attachment; Normally the arms 4 are slightly bowed or under tension and the punches 5' bear upon the body of the top 2. When it 1s desired to extract the contents of the can, the arms 4 are forced downward, thus causing the punches 5 to penetrate-the top 2 and form openings 10, one of which will serve as an outlet and the other as an air vent, whereby the contents of the can may be discharged in a manner readily understood.
ll/Vhen it is desired to discharge the contents the device is turned on the rivet to withdraw the tapered punches from the openings and when it is desired to seal the can again the device is turned back to allow the punches to snap into the openings to form sealing agentsby which evaporation is prevented and spilling of the contents obviated in the event that the can should be upset.
It will be seen that my invention provides a simple, reliable and effective device for the purpose described which may be easily and economically manufactured, and which forms a permanent fikture'of the filled can, thus obviating the necessity of employing auxiliary attaching means of a cumbersome nature to secure the device in'position, as is necessary inconstructions where the deviceY is designed solely for use as an attachment when the can is punctured and during the period of consumption of -its contents.
VI claim In a can opener and seal, the combination of a can body yhavin a depressed, puncturable top provided with a central opening, a spring metal strip extending dametrically across said depressed top and wholly below the plane of the rimedge thereof, said strip having a substantially straight central portion provided with an opening registering with the opening in the can top, and having oppositely extending, normally bowed spring 1 hmmm jectimns dpendihg; from hh@ owner @nds @if res @cfa Ve y. 1h said bowed spring arms, d pm passing 'n 'faszimnny Whreof di ax my signature through the registering opnings in hh@ om im pmsemce of :two wismsses.
