\ GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10,1914.
Application filed'Septem'ocr 4, 1918. Serial No. 788,125.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. SCHUSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Gearing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed .to improvements in clothes wringers, and. more particularly to gearing for operating the rollers thereof.
The invention has for its object to pro- .vide a wringer with its support adapted \Vith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whiche- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view on line 5- 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the clutch operating yoke.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a su porting bench upon which is secured the liange base 2 of the tubular upright 3.
Rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the upright 8 is a head 4, one side of which being provided with a socket 5' for receiving the horizontally disposed tubular arm 6, and to which is clamped a wringer frame 7, the lowermost roller shaft 8 thereof being provided at one end with a beveled gear 9, the purpose of which will appear later.
Secured beneath the bench 1 isa hanger 10 in which is journaled the lower end of the vertical shaft 11, the upper end of which is journaled in the top of the head 4 and has its outer end provided with a beveled gear 12, said gear being in mesh, with the beveled gear 9 hereinbefore mentioned.
Surrounding the shaft 11 is a sleeve 13, the upper end of which is positioned in the head 4'and is-provided with spaced circular flanges 14, the purpose of which will appear ater.
J ournaled in the arm 6 is a rock shaft 15, the outer end of which is provided with a lever 16, the same being held in its adjusted positions by the three-point segment 17.
The inner end of the shaft '15 has fixed thereto an eccentric 18, saideccentric being engaged between the flanges 1 4 so'that when the said shaft is rocked the sleeve 13 may be raised or lowered, as desired.
Loosely mounted upon the lower end of the shaft 11 are spaced beveled gears 19 which have their opposing faces provided with clutches 20 which are adapted to be alternately engaged by the clutch sleeve', 2l which is splined upon the shaft 11 'for operation between the gears 19.
A hearing 22 is formed in one arm of the hanger 10 and has journaled therein a shaft 23 which may be a continuation of the driving shaft of thewashing machine.
Connected to the lower end of the sleeve 13 is a yoke 24, the arms of which engage the clutch sleeve 21 so that upon raising or lowering the sleeve 13, through the medium of the rock shaft and eccentric 18, said clutch sleeve may be operated to engage either one of the clutches 20, thereby rotating the shaft 11 in the desired direction,
thus imparting. proper movement to therollers of the wringer.
It is obvious that the lever 16 may be shifted so that the clutch sleeve 21 will disengage both clutches 20, and at which time the gears 19 run idle.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a wringer has been provided, which may be swung to the desired position and therollers thereof governed by a lever which is always in convenient reach of the operator.
Fixed tothe bench 1 is an upright 22, the upper end of which is provided with a sliding latch 23, said latch having its bolt adapted to engage the outer end of the arm 6, so that said arm will be prevented from swinging during 7 the operation of the wringer. but is operable to'release said arm to permit the same to be swung as desired.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a tubular standard, a head rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the standard, a tubular arm carried by the standard, a rock shaft supported by the arm, a lever for rocking the shaft fixed to the outer end thereof, an eccentric fixed to the other end of the rock shaft, a vertical shaft extending through the head and tubular standard and having'gears carried by its lower end for rotating the same, a sleeve sli'dably mounted upon the vertical shaft and having spaced flanges carried by its upper end and between which the eccentric engages, whereby when said shaft is rocked the sleeve is raised or lowered, and means carried by the lower end of the sleeve for operatively connecting the gears carried by the lower end of the vertical shaft to the same.
2. A device of the class described comshaft and having flanges on the upper end thereof, a rock shaft, an eccentric on the end of said .rock shaft and rotatably mounted between the said flanges, gears loosely mounted on the lower end of the first mentioned shaft, means to drive said gears, a sleeve fixedly mounted on the said shaft between the said gears, said sleeve being operated by the rotation of the rock shaft and having clutch members to engage the gears.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P. SGHUSTER.
Witnesses JOHN FRISCH, N; A. 'WEBER.
