Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 19141.
Application filed September` 24, 1913. Serial No. 791,665.
T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Annnnnn'r L. Tnavrm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ihilmont, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trimming and Cleaning Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a trimming and cleaning attachment, and more particularly to the class of trimming attachments with an oscillatory cleaning brush for use on seaming or looping machines, the attachment being especially designed to be applied to the improved looping machine forming the subject matter of Letters Patent No. 1,054,724, issued March 4;, 1913.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the seams of hosiery and knit underwear formed from looped fabric may be trimmed and cleaned prior to the uniting of the seams while the sewing machine is in operation, thereby cutting the surplus knitted fabrics and cleaning out the half stitches so that as the work enters the sewing `needle and is sewed there is no surplus waste left in the fabric when sewed together, and in this manner avoiding ridges at the seams of the finished article.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of an attachment of this character wherein the same can be mounted upon the machine for sewing looped fabrics so that on unitingthe fabrics thereby the seams produced will be trimmed and the surplus threads or loops will be removed under the action of the brush which serves to clean the seams, thereby avoiding ridges at any point of the same. i
A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the brush and knife are actuated in a novel manner simultaneously with the working of the machine 4for sewing the looped fabrics together, the attachment being of novel construction to assure the perfect trimming of the fabrics at the seams and for cleaning such seams to remove waste threads or loops therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eiicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the construction, eombination and arrangement of parts as will showing the attachment constructed in aci corda-nce with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l `is a bottom plan view of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. G is a view similar to Fig. 2, looking toward the opposite side of the attachment. Fig. 7 is a per.- spective view of the trimming knife and stem.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the attachment comprises a bracket 10 which is bolted or otherwise fixed to the head A of the machine for sewing looped fabrics, the details of which are set forth in Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to, the head being supported by the arm B of the frame C of the machine, and rotatable on said head is the point cylinder D having the peripherally disposed points E upon which the looped fabrics are impelled in the usual manner. This point cylinder I) is rotated through the medium of connections with a horizontal shaft F which is driven by means of a belt pulley G carried thereby. Formed on the bracket 10 is a boss or stud 11 on which is engaged the intermediate eye 12 formed on a. supporting arm 13 which is provided with outer eye terminals 14 and 15, the stud 11 being formed with a groove 16 in which engages a set screw 17, the latter being threaded in the eye 12 so as to lock the arm 13 thereon against swinging movement.
Formed on the outer eye terminal 15 is a yoke or crane 18, while rotatably and slidably fitted in the said eye terminal 15 is a knife carrying stem or shaft 19, thesame being also rotatably and slidably fitted in a bearing 20 formed on the crane 18 in alinement with the eye terminal 15, the stem or shaft 19 being fitted at its lower end with a trimming knife 21, the latter being detachably connectedto a foot 22 formed with a ico sleeve 23 adapted to surround the stein or shaft 19, and carries a set screw 24 which locks the sleeve thereon.
Carried by the other eye terminal le of the arm 13 is a gear casing which is formed with a hollow stem 26 fitted in the eye terminal la and held fast therein by means of a set screw 27 carried by the terminal. Passed through the hollow stem 26 is an oscillating shaft 28 having fixed theretoa beveled gear 29 adapted to work within the casing 25, and with this gear meshes a beveled pinion 30 fixed to a rotatable brush carrying shaft 3i which is supported in slidable and rocking bearings 32 and 33 respectively, the casing being cut away in its side wall to form a space for the rocking bearing 33 which is supported upon pivots Slt adjustably mounted in out-turned wings 35 integral with the side wall and at opposite sides of the cut away portion therein, while the sliding bearing 32 is held within guideway 3G formed in the side wail of the casing diametrically opposite the cut away portion therein. rfhe sliding bearing is of the split type which are formed with extensions 37 providing a sleeve on which is fitted the hub portion 38 of a hood 39 for the cleaning brush 4:0 which is detachably fixed' to the end of the shaft 31 extended within the hood 39. Rising from the casing 25 above the guideway 36 are posts 4l supporting a cross plate i2 through which works an adjusting screw lf3, the upper threaded end le of which is engaged by a knurled adjusting nut which works against the plate e2, the screw being extended between the posts el and is swiveled in any suitable manner in the sliding bearing so that the brush can be adjusted with relation to the point cylinder D of the sewinfr machine. Surrounding the screw 413 is a coiled expansion spring 46, one end of which works against a Cotter pin 47 engaged in the screw, and its opposite end works against the plate 42, the spring being designed to act as a tensioning device on the screw when being lowered on adjustment of the nut i5 threaded thereon. |the hub portion 98 of the hood 39 carries a set screw i8 which engages the sleeve 37 to prevent the turning of the hood and permits the proper adjustment thereof.
Suitably fixed to the shaft 28 at the upper end thereof is a lever 49, while xed to the knife carrying shaft or stem 19 -is a lever 50, the latter being connected to the said lever 1i9 through the medium of link 51 so that the said levers will workin unison.
The lever i9 has connected thereto by means of a universal joint 52 an operating rod 53, the same being also eccentrically connected by means of a universal joint to a rotatable disk 55 centrally fixed to the driving shaft F of the sewing machine so knife 2l and the brush i() simultaneously with each other.
At one side of the bracket 10 is adjustably connected a foot 56 supporting a guide plate 57 which is arranged vertically at one side of the knife 2l and is of the shape shown to deflect the trimmings severed by the knife from the looped fabrics which is united or stitched together during the operation of the machine for sewing the said fabrics together, it being understood of course that the point cylinder D of they said machine is actuated whereby a step by step rotary movement is imparted thereto while the machine is in operation. rllhe foot 56 is formed with a bifurcation 5S in which engages a threaded stud 59 carried by the bracket l0, the latter being formed with a guide rib v60 which engages in a guideway 6l formed in the inner side of the bifurcated portion 5S of the foot so as to prevent the twisting of the latter when adjusted. rPhe bifurcated portion 58 of the foot carries anotched plate 62 adapted to vstraddle an adjusting screw 68 having a threaded inner end dei engaged in the stud 59, the screw G3 being formed with a reduced portion G5 engaging the notch in the plate 69. and thereby aii'ording a swivel connection for the screw with the foot so that the latter can be vertically adjusted on the turning of the screw. This foot 5G is locked in adjusted position by means of a binding nut 6G threaded on the stud 59, and in this manner the plate 57 can be held in adjusted relation to the knife for throwing oi'f the trimmings cut thereby from the looped fabric carried by the point cylinder D of the machine.
rihe foot 56 carries a shearing plate or shoe 67 which co-acts with the knife for the cutting of the looped fabrics when trimming the same, the brush being designed to clean the seam after the fabrics have been stitched together or united sov as to remove waste vthreads or half loops therefrom re# sultant from cutting the fabrics by the knife 2l during the working of the attachment.
Loosely surroundingthe stem. or shaft 19 between the eye terminal l5 of the arm 13 and the lever 50, is a collar 68 formed with nibs the latter adapted to work upon the upper edge of the eye terminal lo for lifting the knife a predetermined distance. the nibs G9 being designed to engage iniio-tches 70 formed in the eye terminal l5 when the knife has been lowered so as to prevent the turning of the collar 68. The said knife is held in lowered position through the medium of a coiled expansion spring 7l surrounding the stem or shaft i9 between the lever 50 and the bearing 20 of the crane 1S.
During the operation of the sewing machine the trimming and cleaning attachment will be simultaneously actuated so that the knife 2l will oscillate and likewise the brush 40 whereby the knife will cut the surplus in the fabrics held by the point cylinder, and subsequent thereto the brush will clean the fabrics to remove waste threads or loops cut by the knife prior to the uniting of the fabrics, and in this manner the seamed or looped fabrics will be trimmed at the seams and such seams will be cleaned or the surplus stitches removed so as to avoid the formation of ridges and to prevent surplus waste left in the fabric when sewed together.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
