MAJ/f wf f BERNHARD GLASER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LEAF-SUPPORTING MECHANISM.
lLimusa.
To all u'flzqm t may concern.:
Be it known that I, BERnHARDGLAsER, a citizen `of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State "of Illinois, have invented a 'new and useful Improvement Leaf-Supporting .Mechanism of which the following is a srfmcificationf v My invention relates to loose leafbooks and particularlyto improved leaf supporting meehanismand arrangement.
Among the important; objects ofthe invention are to provide strong yet flexible supporting members each in the form Qf'a series oflinks pivoted together and overlapping ;l toJ provide improved means jin the form of' tongues on the book covers to which the ends of the supporting members are dertachably secured; .to provide improved means for ydetachabl` securing the i supporting members'to t ejtongues; to. provide improved, meansforreturning the sup orting .members to properv curvature when t e book is closed; and .in general to provide simpli- `fied and more .eiiicien't mechanism and ar- I A ing the member and anchored bya link 25 tothe back 23'as shown. When the book is rangement of the character referredto.
In i the accompanying drawings which clearly, showA the various features of the invention Figure 1 is an nd view o fa closed 'book 'with the Aleavesbroken away to reveal the supporting members. vFi .-2 is asimilar view showingjthe hookopen, 4ign?! is'an enlarged side velevational view, .partlyin section,v of one of the .linked supporting-mem! bers,-Fig. 4 is atop view, partly in section,
of the supporting members, and Fig. 5. sho-ws a Vmodified form of chain and arrangement for securing, itfto the tongues on' the'book y covers.
'Thev vbook shown-V comprises the ycovers 10 and 11 which at theirscore or hingeli'nesg12 and 13 have tongues or'extensions-141and1511 Connecting' these tongues at intervals are, supporting members M V for the leavesL.' Each `of these I'support'm'g ,memberscom--I 'prisesla series of 11n-ks 16 pivoted togetheri end. to end. These links: arewpreferably of sheet `metal and offrusto'conical shapegthe apex'end of onebeing telescoped into'y the base .ofthe other,V pivot 'pins' 17 passing4 through the engaging apex a'nd base ends as shown; The links overlap'somewhatlike fish scales so that themembers areosmooth' exterior; to enable theleaves topas's readily thereover.
As shown 1n Figs.

through, the ends of these links passing through suitable openings 19 in the tongues 14 and 15 in order that the holes 18a andv 18b may receive pins or rods 20 for enga ing against the outerlsides 'of rthe tongues to ioldl The supporting members are rst secured at one end toA 'one of the tongues and the lleaves L then applied thereto, the other ends of the members being then secured to the other tongue. When the book is opened the supporting members will bend upwardly and convex as shown in Fig. 2, and when the book closesthese members shoulpl bend downwardly and concave as shown in Fig.
Toinsure such concaving 'of the support- 1n wigth the back 23 of the book,'each connection beingvin the form of a ring 2 freely receivopened the leaves fall to the'sides and conveX the supportingv members, and the con1- nections also cause the back 23 to convex. When the book 'is' closed the back 23 members each `member has connection straightens and concaves and by meansfof.-y
the connections pulls"4 the supporting mem; bersl backito concave form.` f
I thus provide very v'ble leaf supporting "be readilyiapplied an anism .which can the 'i exact Avconstruction and arrangement shown as changes and modifications are pos# .the invention. l ,y r I4 claimy the following:
sible which still come 'pwithin the `scope of 'withthe covers and back, of tongues extending lfrom the covers, leaf supporting memu bers ldetachably connected to. bridging between-the tongues, and.` means connecting the memberswith the book back.
2.111 a loose `leaf book the'i combination afri'ng on each supporting member. conneted with the back. l v
not, of course, desireto be limited to In a loose leaf bookthe combination l v hich is always'held in position to give book the proper v with' the lcovers and back of tonguesextend..
.ing 'ffrom the covers, ilexibleleaf supporting i. I i -members-bridging between the tongues, and
8. In a loose leaf book the combination With'the covers land back, of tongues extending from the covers, linked leaf sup. porting members bridging between and detachably connected/with said tongues,an'd
e ring receiving each member and c0nnec'te'd'- with the-covers and back, of'tonguesvextendi5 e ing from the covers, and leaf supporting members bridging :between said tongues and each comprising 'a series of telescoped linksI pivotedtogether, and a .ring receiving each member and connected to the book back.
l'ilIntestimony whereof I have-signed my namezto this'speciflcation in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses this 18th day of August, A. D.A 1913, et Chicago, Illinois.
