Be it known t at I, THOMAS D. MnmiR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Catonsville, county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement' in Protected 'Metal Sheets, of which the following description, in connection fication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. p
This invention relates to building material of that character in which sheets of asbestos paper or like material are affixed by an asphalt cement to the opposite surfaces of a metal sheet, preferably steel, and substantially such as shown and described in U. S. Patent No. 1,002,303 dated Sept. 5, 1911.
The present invention has for its object to prolong the life and effectiveness of building material of the. character described, which is accomplished in accordance with this invention by enveloping the side edges. of the asphalt covered metal sheet with folds of ashestosp'aper, which folds may be secured to or form part of one orboth of the asbestos sheets which are afiixed to the opposite surfaces of the metal sheet.

Referring to the drawing a represents a metal sheet, preferably-steel or iron and which may be of any desired size accord ing to which part of the building it is to be used in, and b, 0, represent sheets or preformed layers of asbestos paper or the like, which are firmly attached to the metal, sheet by an interposed layer d of asphalt cement. The asphalt (Z covers the edges of the metal sheet a, and in accordance with. the present invention the asphalt which covers the side edges of said metal sheet is enveloped in folds 10, 12, of asbestos paper which extend the length of the metal sheet and which may besecured to or form part of one or both of the sheets 7), c.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the folds 10, 12 are represented as forming part of the asbestos sheet I), which in this case is made wider than the metal sheet a, so that theopposite Specification of Letters Patent.

This construction'is advantageous, in that, the sheet 0 may be made of an inferior quality of asbestos aper and the sheet I; of a superior quality, or in such case,-the asbestos protected metal sheet may be placed in the building, so that the inferior asbestos sheet 0 will not be subjected to the same conditions as the asbestos sheet I), and conse- 'quently need not be ofas high grade of asbestos. The asbestos folds 10, 12, envelop the side edges of the metal sheet a, and the asphaltfd which covers the said side edges. As a result, the life and usefulness of the asbestos protected metal sheet as a building material is materially prolonged, for the reason that the asphalt covering the side edgesof the metal sheet is itself covered by a thickness of asbestos paper which is opaque. and protects the asphalt from the inpirious effects of light, air, gases and fumes and also from mechanical abrasion, so that the asphalt is kept from deterioratmg, and is maintained in its most effective condition for a materially longer time than 18 the case when the asphalt is exposed to the action of light, air, gases and fumes.
The ends of the metal sheet may be protected by the overlapping ends of the asoesmade wide enough to envelop the sides of the asphalt covered metal sheet a and have their ends overlapped, and the overlapping portionsof the asbestos sheet'may be cemented together with asphalt or other adhesive material. In the present instance the metal sheet a is shown as corrugated but it may be flat if desired. So also theprotective folds 10, 12 are represented as forming integral parts of one of the asbestos sheets,
but they may be separate therefrom and ce- ,mented to the sheets I), 0, with asphalt, and
also they may form part of both sheets,
that is, one fold as 1 0 may form part ofthe' sheet 6, and the other fold 12 may form part of the sheet 0. The protected metal sheet herein shown, may be made'of sufficient size to be used in the construction of the roof, side walls or other part of a building or other structure or they may be made of substantially the size of a shingle and used as such in the same manner as the ordinary wooden shingles. In some instances the inferior sheet 0 maybe made of paper, felt or like material. The sheet 6 of high grade asbestos is designed to be exposed to the weather and may and preferably will be compacted, hardened and waterproofed, substantially as described in the patent referred to. The' ends of the sheets I), a, may overlap the metal sheet a suflicient amount to enable the said ends to be folded under the ends of the metal sheet, if desired.
Claims.
l. A material of the character described, comprising a metal sheet having affixed to its opposite surfaces by an asphalt cement preformed layers of asbestos and having its side edges covered with asphalt which is enveloped by folds of preformed layers of asbestos extended longitudinally of the metal sheet.
2. A material of the character described, comprising a metal sheet enveloped in a layer of asphalt cement and having affixedto .its opposite surfaces preformed sheets of asbestos of .diiterent'grades, one of the said sheets ofasbestos extendingfrom one surface around both side edges of the metal sheet and overlapping the other sheet of asbestos.
3. A material of the characterdescribed,
comprising a steel sheet covered with asbestos and having each side edge of the steel sheet inclosed in a continuous fold of asbestos, the said fold being adapted to underlie and overlie the steel sheet, and to be secured thereto by an asphalt cement.
4. A material of the character described, comprising a steel sheet enveloped in a layer of asphalt cementand having fixed to one surface a preformed sheet of asbestos of superior quality and to its other surface an inferior sheet,and folds of asbestos extended longitudinally of the steel sheet and enveloping the opposite side'edges of the same, said folds overlying and underlying the metal sheet and bel g secured thereto by asphalt cement.
5. A material of the character described, comprising a steel sheet covered with asbestos and having each side edge of the steel sheet inclosed in a continuous fold of fibrous material, the said fold being adapted to underlie and overlie the steel sheet, and to be secured thereto by an asphalt cement.
