To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, R DOLPH D. BECKER and FRANK NEMARNICH, citizens of Austria, and residing, respectively, at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, and Astoria, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elliptic Compasses, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as elliptic compasses, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which an ellipse of any desired form and size may be quickly and easily drawn.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side view of our improved ellipse drawing compass; Fig. 2 a sectional plan view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a partial section on the line v3-3 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4 a plan view of a support which forms a part of our improved COHIPELSS.
In the practice of our invention, we pr0- vide a tripod support or having a head a in which is a conical socket a and two of the legs of the tripod support are in the same vertical plane as shown at a*, while the other is in a plane at right angles thereto as shown at a in Fig. 4;.
The device also comprises a yoke-shaped frame 6 comprising two spring arms 6 connected by a cross head end portion 6 at one end, and said arms Z2 are provided with longitudinal slots 1%, and one of said arms, the top arm as shown in the drawing, is provided with a head 6 the bottom of which. is provided with a sleeve b, and mounted in the ends of the arms 6 and passing through the bottom arm is a cylindrical head 0 which is preferably tubular in form, and the lower end of which is provided with a conical point which fits in the socket a of the tripod support a and is secured therein in any desired manner but preferably by a pin passing therethrough, and the upper end and placed of the cylindrical head 0 fits in a socket 5 If in the head 6 of the top arm 5 and formed or partially formed by the sleeve b, in the socket b is a spiral spring d. Passing through the cylindrical head 0 6 and at right angles to each other are tubular shafts e and f, and these shafts are provided with supplemental shaft members 6 and 7 which are secured to a flexible band 9, and the supplemental shaft members 6 are pro- 3 vided with reverse threads c and the corresponding endportions of the shaft 6 are correspondingly threaded, while the shaft.
Mounted on the flexible band 9 is a slide it, the top and bottom edge portions of which 7 are folded inwardly and overlap thetop and bottom edges of said band, and said slide is provided on its outer side with vertically arranged keepers [L and mounted in said keepers is a pencil holding frame a com- 8 posed of parallel side bars 71 and a top head 11 and bottom head i and the heads 2' and 6* are provided with annular grooves i and i in which the side portions of the, top and bottom members 5 of the yoke-shaped 8 frame fit, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. and the tripod support a is set, as shown in Fig. 4E, with the legs a on one of said lines and the leg a on the other. The yoke-- shaped frame Z) may now be turned on the cylindrical head 0 and with all the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, an ellipse of the form of the band 9 will be drawn on the sheet of paper or other material, as will be readily understood, if the pencil is held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and ifit is desired to draw a smaller ellipse, the pencil is adjusted inwardly into the position shown at a3, or to any other desired extent, but if a larger ellipse is to be drawn the pencil is adjusted in the direction as shown at 02 It will be understood that the yoke-shaped frame Z) is the only part of the apparatus that turns in the operation of drawing an ellipse, and said yoke-shaped frame turns on the cylindrical head 0, and while we have shown and described the said cylindrical head 0 as detachable in the tripod support a, this construction is preferable only for the purpose of being able to detachably connect the parts for shipment or other purposes, and the head 0 may be connected with the support a in any desired manner. The pencil holding tube j may be detached from the yoke-shaped frame 6 for similar or other purposes. The shape of the ellipse drawn may be regulated, as desired, by turning the gears e and f, and in the form of construction shown, the gear 6 is provided with a rim which facilitates this operation, and said gear may be turned by hand whenever desired, and the turning of these gears in one direction will lengthen and narrow the ellipse and in the other direction will shorten and Widen it.
In the operation of the device, as hereinbefore described, the top arm 6 of the yokeshaped frame I) may be depressed by pressure applied thereto, and the operation of the pencil may thus be controlled to an extent, and this pressure may be applied to either the head Z) of said arm, or to the head 2' of the pencil holding frame 2', but the normal position of these parts is that shown in Fig. 1, in which position the spring arm 6 of the yoke-shaped frame 5 is slightly raised by the spring (Z.
With our improvement ellipses of any desired shape and size, within certain limits, may be quickly and easily drawn, and while we have shown and described the preferred form and construction of the details of our improvement, our invention is not limited thereto, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an ellipse drawing instrument, a support, a yoke-shaped frame rotatable on said support, shafts passing through said support at right angles to each other and provided with adjustable end members, an elastic band connected with the outer end portions of said shaft, a pencil holding frame slidably mounted on said band and movable radially in said yoke-shaped frame, and means for adjusting the telescopic shaft members radially.
2. An instrument of the class described, comprising a support having legs, two of which are inthe same plane and the other at right angles thereto, a yoke-shaped frame rotatable on said support, shafts passing through said support at right angles to each other and provided with radially adjustable end members, an elastic band connected with the end members of said shafts, and a slide mounted on said band and provided with a pencil carrier radially movable in said yokeshaped frame. An instrument of the class described, comprising a support having a cylindrical head, a yoke-shaped device rotatably mounted on said head, shafts passing through said head at right angles to each other and provided with radially adjustable end members, an elastic band connected with said end members, a slide mounted on said band, and a pencil holder connected with said slide and movable radially in said yoke-shaped frame.
l. An instrument of the class described. comprising a support having a cylindrical head, a yoke-shaped device rotatably mounted on said head, shafts passing through said.
head at right angles to each other and provided with radially adjustable end members, an elastic band connected with said end memhere, a slide mounted on said band, and a pencil holder connected with said slide and movable radially in said yoke-sh aped frame, said pencil holder being adjustable into different positions and being provided with a pencil which is adjustable longitudinally therein.
