To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OscAR T. Gnassooon and WILLIAM F. PriILLirs, citizens of the United States, and residing at Shamrock, in the county of l/Vheeler and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Lifters, of which the following is aspecification.
The primary purpose of this invention is the provision of an appliance for jacking up the valve spring of an internal combustion engine when it is required to remove the valve for any purpose.
The invention consists of a device embodying two standards, the one relatively stationary and the other movable, and manually operable means for actuating the movable standard and securing the same in ad justed position, said actuating means embodying an operating lever and a ratchet mechanism, the several parts involving a novel construction and arrangement whereby the power may befconveniently applied and the device capable of being easily and readily fitted to the valve mechanism of internal combustion engines generally, to admit of the valve spring being compressed when it is required to release or secure the valve.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a valve lifter embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line mw of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The standard 1 is provided at its lower end with an arm 2 which is adapted to en gage the crank case or like part of the engine crane through which the push rod operates to engage the stem of the valve. The standard 1 is formed upon its rear side with a plurality of teeth 3. A second standard 41 is slidable upon the standard 1 and has an arm 5 at its lower end for engaging the valve spring when it is required to compress the same to admit of removing or placing the pin in position by means of which the valve spring is confined in a manner well understood. The arms 2 and 5 are notched or forked at their extremities to fit around the parts such as the push rod bushing and valve stem when the device is in position. The standards and arms may be formed in any manner. A bracket 6 is secured at one end to the standard 4 and its opposite end is formed with an opening to receive the standard 1, upon which it is free to slide. A dog 7 is pivotally connected at one end to the upper end of the standard 4 and its opposite end has an opening formed therein through which the standard 1 passes freely. The dog 7 supplements the action of the bracket 6 in retaining the standard 4: in place and directing the same in its movements upon the standard 1. The standard 1 is retained in the adjusted position by means of the dog 7 engaging one of the teeth 3. A stop 8 provided upon the stand ard 4C, is adapted to engage the dog 7 and limit the downward movement of such dog and cause it to rise with the standard 4-. when the latter is elevated.
The operating lever 9 is connected at its inner end with the bracket 6 by means of a link 10 and stud 11. The inner endof the operating lever is forked and the forked members embrace opposite sides of the standard 1 and link 10, the terminal portions of the forkedmembers being brought together upon opposite sides of the link 10 and secured thereto by means of a fastening 12. A slide 13 is mounted upon the standard 1 and the forked members of the operating lever 9 are pivoted to such slide by means of fastenings 1a, which are preferably threaded to the said forked members, the inner ends of such fastenings entering openings formed in opposite sides of the bearings 14:. A dog 15 is pivoted at its outer end to. the operating lever 9 at 16 and its inner end is formed with an opening to receive the standard 1.
A spring 17 secured at one end to the op erating lever 9 has its free end exerting a pressure upon the dog 15 to cause it to engagezthe teeth 3 of the standard 1. The
operating lever and slide 13 and dog 15 are arranged intermediate ofthe bracketfiiand dog 7 In the operation of the device, the same is arranged so that the arm 2 engages the crank case or other part of the engine crane and the arm 5 is in engagement with the spring of the valve to be compressed. Upon: depressing theouter end of the operating lever 9, the inner end of such lever is elevated thereby lifting the bracket *6 and" standard 4. During this movement the dog upward movement of %the outer end of :the
operating'lever, both :the slide 13 and dog 15 .move upward :upon the standard 1. When neXt depressing the outer'end of the operating lever 9,.the dpg 15 remains-stationary by reason of its engagement with oneof the teeth 3 and the standard 4 and adjunctive parts are-carried upward as in the first instance,'the'dog 7-moving upward with the standard 4 byireasonoftheengagement of the stop Satherewith. By proper manipulation ofthe'operating lever 9, the standard l is permitted to move downward upon 'the standard 1 thereby releasing the valve spring which mayassume its:normal position-afterthepinzhas'been placed inposition' in the stem of'thevalve.
From the foregoing descriptiongta-ken-in connection with .the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of 'the-method-of operation will be readily apparent-to those' skilled in the Etl'tFtO which the invention appertains, and while awe have described the principle of operation :of the invention together with the device which we now consider :to be'the best embodiment thereof, we desireztohave'it understood that the device shown !is -merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired aszare within the scope ofthe invention as claimed.
It may be advantageous to connect the upper end of the standard 1 with a convenient part-ofthe engineor frame, and for this purpose a short chain 18 isengagedzat one end withi the standard 1, and is provided at its opposite end witha hook 1 9 either2to engage a part of the engine or :frame or to engage one. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as.new..1s:

A device of the character set forth, the same comprising :a toothed 'sta-ndard having an ditstanding arm, '-.a 'movable standard-provided with an ofi-standing arm and slidable upon the toothed standard,a dog pivoted :to *the :movable standard and slidable upon the. toothed standard and adapted :to engage the teeth thereof .to hold the movable standard in adjusted position, a stop upon:the movable standard .to engage the :said dog, a slide mounted :upon 'the toothed standardxand adapted to intermittently engage the teeth thereof, an operating lever mounted upon such slide andhaving connection with the movable standard, and a dog pivoted to the operating lever and slidable upon the toothed standard and adapted to engage the teeth "thereof.
