HINGE.
7 '0 all w): on it may concern Be it known that l, FRANKPARIZEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andfitate of Illinois. have invented a certain new and useful ln'iprovement in Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.
My invention relates to hinge mechanism and is more particularly of value in connection with devices such as doors or windows which it is desired to hold in various different angular positions.
My invention is of particular utility in connection with window shields of automobiles, for instance, or in connection with the front windows of limousine cars or similar inclosures which at various times it is desired to hold at different angular ositions.
Without limiting my invention, will describe it herein in'connection more particularly with the front window of a closed vehicle, referring in this description to the accompanying drawing illustrating the same in which- Figure 1 is a partial front view of a tiltable window mounted by means of my improved bracket; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof showing the window in an alternative position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my improjved hinge. mechanism; Fig. L is a detail front View of a portion of the hinge, and Fig. 5 is a detail side view of one of the movable elements of the device.
Referring more specifically to Figs. 1' and 2, I show a window casing 1 within which a tiltahle window frame 2 having the pane 3 is adapted to be mounted, by means of my improved hinge mechanism 4.- of which 1. preferably desire to have one at each of the opposite sides. By, means of my improved hinge mechanism the window 3 may he held in any one of a great plurality of diiferent angular positions, 038 of which is shown inspecification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1913. Serial No. 149,621.
having .a conical interior surface and adapt ed toengage the conical surface 7"." The balls 12 are movably mounted within cylinders 14 securely held within the dish 12. Springs 15 are pressed against the balls and hold them downwardly, pressing them into the recesses 11; when the cover plate 16 mounted'in place, being held by two screws passing into the screw threaded holes 17, 3.7. The heads of these screws 17 hold the plate 16 in shape although they are not shown in Fig. 3 for the sake of clearness. A heavy spring 1.8 rests upon the plate 1.2 and is held in place by means of the nut 19 screwed to the stud l0. -it will thus be seen that while the spring 18 tends to push the inclined annular surfaces of the elements 6 and 12 together at the surface i and thus to hold the parts tightly together, the pres sure of the springs 15 against the balls 11 tends to counteract in a measure this pres sure more especially during the time that the balls are moving from one aperture 9 to the other, at which time of course the parts 6 and 12 hats relative angular morement, and it is at that time wise to reduce the frictional: the surface 7. The plate 12 carries wings 20, 20 by means of which it is fastened to the window frame 2. It will be readily seen that as the window isrotated the halls find lodginent' within a recess 9 and on account of the springs 15 hold the window in the position in which it is placed.
The springs of course, are strong enough to w thstand wind pressure.
By means of the construction which 1 -hare described I am enabled to secure a Patented Got. 2?, W 14.
will be noted that the stud 1O isof less; di-
contest being at the surface 7. I find that v by means of this particular structure the window is accurately held in a position 111 which it is placed and may occupy a. closed position without rattling and without be" ing shifted by the wind.
linvingihus described one form which my invention may take, it Wlll bee parent that many modifications may be me c with-' out deperting from its spirit.
While I have-however described the specific embodiment shown, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Petent is:
A device of the character described com-' prising two relatively rotatable elements, said elements hevmgsurfaces 1ncl1ned to their axis at their engaging peripheries,
means for resiliently holding said elements in engagement, means interposed between FRANK PARIZEK.
Witnesses MAX. W. ZABEL, HAZEL ANN Jones.
