UNITE STATES PATENT @FFTQE.
EDWARD J. HAWKINS, 0F SOLVAY, NEVJ YORK.
SHEET-MUSIC CONTAINER.
Application filed November 29, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Solvay, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Music Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to containers for sheet music.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a container wherein any number of sheets of music can be conveniently held and arranged so that the user can readily procure the particular piece of music to be played, and when removed from the container can be held on the front thereof for the easy reading thereof during the playing of the instrument.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container wherein the same has suitable indicia thereon indicative of the contents so that the user can readily determine the particular piece of music desired within the container, the sheet music being held therein and carry tabs provided with indicia corresponding to certain indicia in the table of contents indicated on the front of the container, thus enabling a player at a glance to procure the desired piece of music to be played.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container wherein one face thereof has suitable indicia thereon desighating the character of music within the same, the owner of the container, and the particular instrument for which the music is written, and other indicia for the convenience of the player, the container being provided with a holder which enables the placing of the sheet music therein while the instrument is being played to enable the easy reading of the music by the player.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a container which is ex tremely simple in construction, convenient for use, and inexpensive in manufacture.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a container for sheet music constructed in accordance with the invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 27, 1914.
Serial No. 803,769.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a sheet of music placed within the holder on the container. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of container. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 4.. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a still further modified form of container, the same being in open position. F ig. 7 is a front view thereof. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view of a music book, showing some 0 the leaves partly turned.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
container comprises a case which is in the form of an envelop body 5, preferably made from pasteboard, although the same can be made from any desirable material, either of a stiff or flexible nature, the body being open at one edge thereof, and at its open edge is formed an extension flap 6, while printed or otherwise marked on the front face of the body is suitable indicia, as at 9, indicative of the contents of the container, which is adapted to receive any number of sheets of music 7, each being provided with a tab 8 which is fixed thereto or detachably mounted thereon, and has provided thereon a suitable character such as a numeral or letter to enable the sheets of music to be arranged so that the numbers will be con secutively disposed, the tabs 8 being extended through the open edge of the body 5 and overlie the extensions 6 to be visible to the user of the container. The indicia on the front of the body 5 includes a table of contents, the same having like characters as ap pear on the tabs 8, so that reference may be made to the table of contents for the selection of a particular piece of music by the player, thereby enabling the said player to determine at a glance the exact or particular piece of music to be removed from the con tainer for the playing thereof. The indicia on the front of the body 5 is also indicative of the particular instrument for which the sheet music is written held within the con tainer.
The tabs 8 can be colored difi'erently with respect to each other, and the characters thereon varied. By coloring the tabs differently the musician or player can readily determine the nature of a particular piece of music, that is to say, whether it is a waltz,
two-step, ragtime, lancers, march, operatic selection, overture, inter-mezzo, polka, quadrille or schottische.
Secured to the front face of the body 5 at the closed longitudinal edge and also at one end edge thereof is a strip 10, the same being permanently or 'detachably fastened in any suitable manner to the body 5 and is adapted to serve as a music sheet holder so that the sheet of music will lie over the front face to be conveniently read by the player or musician, the sheet music being inserted between the strip 10 and the front of the body 5 of the container as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In Figs. at and 5 there is shown a modified form of container, which comprises an envelop body 11 having at its open edge an extension 12 carrying a foldable flap 13, the front face of the body 11 being provided with suitable indicia including the table of contents as at 14, and other data hereinbefore mentioned. The front face of the body 11 is provided at the closed longitudinal edge and one end edge with a strip 15 which is permanently fixed thereto or detachable therefrom, and serves as a sheet music holder,'the sheet music being placed within the body 11 when not in use, and each carries a tab 16 having a suitable character thereon, as hereinbefore described.
In Figs. 6 and 7 there is shown a still further modified form of container, which comprises cover sections 17 and 18 respectively, the same being joined and are foldable on a crease line 19, and between these covers is adapted to be held the sheet music. The inner face of the front cover section 17 has permanently or otherwise fixed at its outer longitudinal edge and at one end edge strip 20 which serves as a sheet music holder, the sheet 21 of the musicbeing held therein as shown in the drawings.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a music book 21, on each leaf of which is mounted a tab 22, the said tabs being provided with characters such as letters or numerals, or both, the tabs being permanently mounted thereon or detachable therefrom, and with the characters thereon, enables a person to quickly determine the particular leaf in the book containing the music to be played. This book can be placed within the container when not in use.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and there fore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. A container comprising an envelop having indicia on one face thereof indicative of the contents therein, and a flange formed at one longer edge and one short edge of the envelo for holdin a sheet of music over P e I one face thereof.
2. A container comprising an envelop having indicia on one face thereof indicative of the contents therein, a flange formed at one longer edge and one short edge of the envelop for holding a sheet of music over one face thereof, and tabs adapted to be mounted on the respective inclosures within the envelop and having indicia corresponding to certain indicia on one face of the said envelop.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD J. HAWKINS.
