Be it known that l. Enum* G. Larra, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York. have invented a new and useful Im )rovement in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in front strike or visible writing typewriting machines in which the type-bars are mounted on a supporting segment which is adapted to be shifted for placing one or another of the sets of type on the type-bars in printing relation to the platen.
One object of the invention is to provide a typewritimlr machine of the Moyer make with a shiftable ty e-bar sefrmciit and adapt various features o the mac iine for coperatioii with such a shiftable segment, as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
(')ther objects of the invention are to provide a typewriting machine having a shiftable type-bar segment with efficient and practical mechanism for operating the carriage esca ment, and, preferably, the ribbon vibrating device also, by the direct action of the type-bars; also to arrange and connect the parts of the iiiachine in such a way that they can be assembled and dis1 mounted with ease and rapidity; also to connect the ribbon vibrator lever directly to the. universal bar without the use of intermediate or separate loose connections, and to do this in a way that permits of different motions of the vibrator for moving either one of a plurality of di'eieiit portion-5s or fields of the ribbon to and from position for printing, and permits the vibrator to he thrown out of action; and `also to` improve visiblewriting typewriting machines in the other respects hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, consistw ing of five sheets: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a typewriting machine embodying the invention. Fig.'2 is a fragmentar)1 similarsectional elevation showing the position of the parts when the segment is shifted. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, on a reduced scale, cf the top plate of the machine. Fi 4 is anrenlarged sectional elevation of tie operating means for the ribbon Yibrator. Fig. 5 is a plan view, partly in section, of the machine, the carn riage being removed and the carriage guide being partly broken away to disclose the nnderlying parts. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation thereof partly broken away and partly 'in section, in line 6 6, Fig. 1. Figs. 7 and S are respectively a fragmentary longitudinal sectional elevation and a rear elevation, partly in section, of a modified construction.

The end portions of the cam slot are preferY ably substantially concentric with the axis of the cam so that. the segment will be locked from movement when the roller enters either of these end portions of the slot. The lower ends of the arms Z l of the universal har are provided with cli-oss pieces or lateral extensions of sutticient width to be engaged by the actuator bars k 1 in either of the three positions of the universal bar just mentioned. If, however, the universal bar is moved still farther to the left, the lower ends of the arms l l aire moved out ot' line with the actuator bars k k', and then either of the actuators K can he moved rear'- wardly from above the type-bar hangers g so that the hangers cau be detached from the segment by loosening their securing screws and disconnecting the type-bars from their actuating'links without removing the clamping plate g for the hangers. The lower end of the actuating link Z for the escapement swings laterally when the uuiversal bar is shifted, but the movement thereof is not great enough to interfere with the perfecty action of the escapement in the three operating positions of the universal ba r.

Figs. 7 and 8 show'a modified const rueticn of thesegment, and universal bar met-hir nism which is less expensive than that before described. In this (xmsti'uetion, (i represents the segment. The type-bars E arc pivoted on the segment by a curved pivot Wire G, thereby dispensing with the separate hangers and bearings used in the first construction. A single curved universal nar actuator K is used which is long enough to be struck by all of the typebars. It is supported by two rock-shafts g q' journaled one in rear of the other in brackets gt projecting rearwardly from the segment G and having upright arms g and q, respectively, which are pivoted to supporting bars q5 projecting rearwardly from the actuator K. The universal bar L has a single pendant arm y pivoted to the rear end of a link q1 which at its front end has a pin and slot connection gs with a bracket q on the actuator, The pivot between the link and the actuator normally occupies a position below tlnl level of the pivot between the lilik and the arm q, and when the segment is shifted the former pivot occupies a position a corresponding i .stanco above that level, so that the action of the escapement and of the ribbon vibrator will be the same in both the normal and shifted positions of the segment. The pin and slot connection Q allows the actuator to return to normal position in ad vauro of the return of the universal bar. and the connections at the ends of the link are loose enough to permit the universal bar to be moved to change the throw of the ribbon vibrator as before described, without affecting the action of the universal bar. This segment is mounted and oierated in the same Way as that first descri ed and, as in theA first construction, the universal har actuator, thet center guide O' fox-'the type-bars, and the back sto P for the type-bars are supported by and s ift with the segment. I claim as my inventiont l. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a platen carriage, a carriage escapement, a series of pivoted type-bars, and a supporting segment for the typebars, of means for actuating the escapement comprising an actuator supported by the segment and actuated by a plurality of the type-bars, substantially as set forth.
2. 4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a platen carriage, a carriage escapement, a series of pivoted type-bars, and a supporting segment for the type-bars, of means for actuating the escapement comprising a curved actuator-arranged to be actuated by a plurality of the type-bars, and a pair of swinging supports for the actuator arranged one in rear of the other and both in rear of the actuator, substantially as set forth.
l5. ln a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a platen carriage, a carriage escapeme'nt, a series of pivotcd type-bars, and a mpporting segment for the type-bars, of means for actuating the escapement comprising a curved aictuator arranged to bc actuated by,a plurality of the type-bars, and a pair of swinging supports for the actuator pivoted one in rear of the other on the segment, substantially as set forth.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main rame, a platen carriage, ivoted type-bars having a pliiralifty of sets of type. and a shiftablehsupt 'orting segment for the type-bars, of means` tor actuating the ,escape-v ment in the different pdsitions ofthe 5@- ment comprising an actuator supported by the segment and adapted to. be actuated by one or more of the type-bars, substantially as set forth.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a platen carriage, a carriage escapement, a series of pivoted typebars having a plurality of sets of type, and a sliiftable supporting segment for the type-bars, of means for actuatingr the escapement in the different positions of the segmentcomprising a plurality of curved actuators supported by the segment each in position to be actuated by a plurality of the typebars, substantiallyy as set forth.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen carriage, a series of pivoted type-bars having a plurality of sets of type, a shiftable supporting segment for the type-bars, and a carriage feed escapement and ribbon vibrator supported in relatively xed positions, of means for actuating the escapement and the ribbon vibrator in the different positions ofthe segment ineluding an actuator supported by the segment and actuated by one more of the typebars, substantially as se forth.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen earring-e, a series of pivoted type-bars, a supporting segment for the type-bars, and a 'carriage escapement, of an actuator supported by the segment and adapted to be actuated by one or more of the type-bars, and means supported independently of the segment and actuated b); said actuator for 'operating the carriage escapement, substantially as set forth.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen carriagefa series of pivoted type-bars, a supporting Segment for the type-bars, and a carriage escapement, of an actuator supported by the segment and adapted to be actuated by one or more of the typebars. and means supportedindependently of the segment and disconnected from said actuator but actuated thereby for operating the. carriage escapement, substantially as set forth.

In a, typewriting machine, the combination with a platen carriage, a. series of pivoted type-bars having a plurality of sets of type, a shiitable supporting segment for said type-bars, and a carriage escapement, of an actuator supported by the segment and adapted to be actuated by one or more of the type-bars. and means supported independn ently of the .segment and actuated by said actuator in the different positions of the segment for operating the carriage escapement, substantially as set forth.

In a typewriting machine. the combiriation with a platen carriage, a series of pivoted type-bars, a supporting segment for the type-bars, a carriage escapement, and a ribbon vibraton of an actuator which shifts with the segment and is adapted to be actuated by one or more of the type-bars, and means supportedy independently of the segment in relatively iixed position and disconnected from said actuator but actuated thereby 'for operating the carriage escape ment and the ribbon vibrator, substantially as set forth.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a yplaten carringe` a carriage escapeinent, a series of piv` oted typebars, and a supporting segment for the typebars, of means for shiftingr said segment to place the type-bars in different printing, relations to the platen, and means for actuatingr the escapement comprising an actuator arranged to be actuated by a plurality of the type-bars, and a supporting member for said actuator pivoted on the segment.
