This invention relntes to ruilwny broke shoes ot the commonly lmown ns reinl'orced shoes ond hns 4for one et its objects the provision oit a shoe provided with n tonpfh dnctile metal attaching lug; securely anchored to the shoe body so that it will not become separated therefrom should the body be cracked or i'ractnred end so constructed that the iup,r will be strengthened und reinioroed to prevent breakage or distortion thereoit. (in the drnwings, reference character 6 indicates the body of the brake shoe which is preferably cast from suitable metal in any preferred shape with' or without inserts of any preferred character. A reinforcing plete 7 is disposed adjacent to the back of the shoe body, said plate beine; of any well known or desired contour having', if pre- :terred, beveled edges 8 and notches 9, or other indentntions or recesses to permit the entrance of the metal of the shoe body for the purpose of forming u locking engagement between the body and the plate. The plate is also shown us provided with longitudinal and transverse slots 10 and 11, respectively, into which the metal of the shoe body is permitted to flow. The end lugs 12 und the guide lugs 13 are preferably/formed by the body metal which flows up around the sides and ends of the plate and through the openings 10. The attaching lug 13 consists ot n metal strip or strop stumpedand bent to the desired shape illustrated in the draw'- ings. rthe plate 7 is provided with transversely extending slots or recesses 1t through which the ends ot the lupi' legs 15 are inserted from the top of the plate, the ends being; thon bent to lie against the under face oi the plate as shown, whereby the lucr is anchored in position.l The lens lare preterably nnrrower than the end portions of the ing above the plete so that shoulders 16 are provided which rest upon the opper taco ol the plate and retain the lun' at the requisite height. ln the manufacture of the shoe the reinforcing plete 't' is stamped ont to the desired shape and is provided with the transversely extendingef slots 11i through which the ends oi the luer legs are inserted. The metal lying between the slots in lthe plane of the plate is also cnt transversely alone,` the longitudinal axis ot the plate and otter, or heitere, the attaching lug has been secured in position the motel lying between the slots is bent upwardly to :form two upwnrdly extending; reinforcing `members or lips 18 disposed within the body of the lug. These rein forcing members or portions fit approximately between thc legs of the lug and beneath the top and serve to strengthen ond reinforce the lug thereby preventing breakage or distortion of the same during handling ofthe shoe and while it is in service. It will be manifest that these reinforcing portions may be bent u simultaneously with the bending of the ends ot the lug lege, if preferred, whereby the lue,r is anchored and provided with the reinforce at one operation. The reinforcing member with-the lug anchored thereto is then placed in the mold and the body is cast thereon in the usual manner.

In the form of my invention shown in' Fig. the plate 19, which is substantially similar to the plate 7 instand of being provided with the centrally disposed slots 14, is cut at euch side to provide recesses 21 spaced apart the requisite distance to rcceive the ends of the attaching lng legs. These inembers which are disposed on each side oif the lreynfay openings 2i serve to strengthen and reinforce the lng and prevent breakage and distortion of the saine.

3. d brake shoe comprising a reinforcing rnember, an attaching lng having ends projecting through `said member and engaged beneath the saine, the ortionof the lng above said nieniber being. provided with :dined heyway openings and the rnetal of the thereto and nieniber at each side of the lreyway openings being bent upwardly beneath the top ot' the lng, and a body cast on said member.
