Description

srrns onar JACOBSEN, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SANDING-MACHINE.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
Serial No. 754,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF JAooBsnN, a citizen of Norway, and a resident of Seattle, county of King, and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Machines, of which the following is a full, true, andexact specification.
This invention relates to sanding machines, which are designed to deposit sand upon freshly painted surfaces, and has for itsprincipal object to provide a machine of this character which will insure the even distribution of the sand when so deposited, and by means of which the sand can be more quickly deposited upon the painted surface, than has heretofore been known in the art, so far as I am aware, l
My device is of simple yet durable construction, easily operated, and not likely to get out of order. a
Further objects and features will appear as the invention is more fully described in the following specification, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my device, partly in section, and partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same upon the line m-w of Fig. 1.
bracket 7', fixed to the said shutter.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral 1 designates a hollow cylinder, communicating with which, at the top, is the hopper 2, which may be closed or opened to anyextent desired by meansof the shutter 3, which slides in the ways formed by the cleats 4 and the wall of the said cylinder, and which is operated which slides the wall of the cylinder, as-shown, and which is connected, at 6, to the small Upon one 'side of the cylinder is the chute 8, whose sides converge toward each other as they extend from the said cylinder, as shown.
The rod 9 loosely passes through the walls,
of the cylinder 1, and has affixed to it the vanes 10. End thrust of the said rod is limited, at one end, by the washer 11 and pin 12 and, at the opposite end, by the similar'washer 13 and pinion 14, the latter being driven on, or otherwise firmly secured, to
the rod 9. Meshing with the said pinion is the gear ,15, which 18 fixed to the stub shaft 16, which revolubly passes through an end wall of the cylinder 1, and in order to give a greater bearing for the said shaft a washer 17 may be afiixed to the said wall of the cylmderrevolubl. mounted upon one end of the cylinder 1. l ecured also to the said stub shaft is th'e'pinion 18, which meshes with the gear 19. The gear 19 is revoluble .upon
the pin 20, projecting from the bracket 21v which is secured to the bottom of the cylinder 1. Fixed to the gear 19 is the crank 22. Projecting rigidly from the bottom of the cylinder 1 is the handle 23.
From the foregoing it is clear that'when a quantity of sand is placed within the hopper 2, the shutter 3 suitably openedand the crank, 22 operated, the vanes 10 will be caused to rotate and the sand will thereby be blown out in anniform current, through the chute 8, the device being meanwhile held or moved about, to suit conditions, by means of the handle 23; with the result that an evenly distributed coat of sand will be deposited upon the painted surface.
It will be noted that the axis of the vanes 10 1s in such position with respect to the downward path of the sand, as it flows from the hopper 2, that the sand falls directly upon the vanes and if any particles thereof are too heavy to be blown out through the chute 8 they will be otherwise forced out by the vanes themselves as they rapidly rotate.
While I have shown a particular embodiment of my invention, I am aware that manychanges therein will readily suggest themselves to other skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I do not, therefore, desire to be limited to the exact form hereinabove described, and shown in the drawings.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
In a sanding machine, the combination with a sandrescrvoir and means for regulating the outlet of sand therefrom, of a hollow cylinder into which the sand fiows from the said reservoir, rotatable vanes Within the said cylinder, and which are in the latter is multiplied with respect to the the path of the sand as it flows frong the speed of the former. said outlet the axis of the said vanes ein eccentric viith respect to the said cylinder: L J Q a crank upon one end of the said cylinder Witnesses:
and gear mechanism connecting said crank FRED P. Gonna, wlth the said vanes, whereby the speed of R. D, SMALLEY,
