DRAIN-PIPE.`
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
Application led February 12, 1912. Serial No. 676,958.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn G. I-IArns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drain pipes and its object is to provide means whereby a pipe of this class may be tested after the pipe sections have been joined and a flooring or pavement laid over the same and to provide means, cooperating with an expansible plug employed for the purpose of closing the pipe to permit the latter to be tested, for enabling a Worn plug `or plugs of different sizes to be etfectively employed to close the opening of the pipe. j
l/Vith these ends in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construcltion hereinafter' described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In these drawings, the view shown is a central vertical section through the pipe and `the expansible plug used in connection therewith.
According to the usual mode oi constructing and laying` soil pipes and of testing them, the main soil pipe l is laid up to the joint 2. Then a plug consisting oit an expansible member is'inserted in the end of the pipe l so as to close the same and the pipe tested by introducing a fluid therein to detect the presence of leaks and then the trap isconnected to the drain pipe section 3 by means ot a suitable permanent joint.
To effect the foregoing operation, it is obvious that access must be had to the soil pipe at the joint and to provide for such access the laying of the floor or pavement above the pipe joint must be delayed until the testing operation can be carried out.
In my invention, means are provided to enable the testing to be carried out after the joint has been sealed and the flooring or pavement laid, which is eii'ected by providing a plug receiving vertical intake section in the drain pipe proper or trap and accessible through its open upper end even after the flooring or pavement` has `been completely laid. To this end the drain pipe trap section 3 is provided with a lvertical intake section 4. For the purpose of closing this trap to permit the testing of the pipe by` the introduction `oi. `fluids or otherwise an expansible plugc is provided, consisting preferably of a rubber `ring mounted upon a screw-operated metal` expander 6. This plug is adapted to be inserted in the upper end of the trap and to be forced tightly against the inner wall of the intake section above the seal portion of the trap, for the purpose of closing the latter. j
A catch basin is secured to theupper end of the drain pipe and is provided with a central cylindrical portion adapted to abut against and form a continuation oi' the trap proper.` The catch basnis provided in its upper edge with an annular recessed portion forming a seat for a cover.
rlhe upper part of the trap section 1s d1- vided into two vertical portions 7 and 8 of different diameters, the upper section being of the greater diameter. Projecting interiorly of the trap section at the lower end of the upper section S is a shoulder 9 against which the expansible rubber ring constituting the plug is adapted to be forced, and against which the plug abuts for the purpose of providing a tight joint between the tra section and the plug and affording a resistance against which the pressure of the expanding member can act to force the ring laterally against the wall oi the trap. The upper end of the intake section is open and is accessible from above the floor or pavement in which the tran is laid whereby the plug may be readily inserted after the flooring or pavement has been completed and the testing operation thus performed without delaying the building operation or without necessitating the removal of a portion of the floor above the permanent joint at 2 for the purpose of obtaining a test of the pi es. At the lower end of the small section a similar interior shoulder 10 is provided.
`When the plug has become worn so that it will not fit tightly against the wall and shoulder of the upper section 7, the plug is passed through said upper section into the lower section and against the lower shoulder 10, and is then expanded against the lower shoulder, and thereby a tight closure may be obtained even with a worn plug, thus avoiding the necessity of discarding the plug when so worn that it will not tit the `upper section, The double section also permits the employment of plugs varying slightly in diameter in their original condition.
vlflaving thus described my invention what l claim is,
l. A drain pipe having` a trap provided with a vertical intake section with an open end accessible from above the iiooror pavement under whichv it is laid, said intake section having, an upper portion terminating at its lower end in an interior shoulder and having another portion of smaller diameter below said first portion and terniiiiating'in an interior shoulder, both of said shoulders being intermediate the open intake end and to receive and cooperate with an expansible pipe closing member for sealing the outer end of said pipe for testing purposes, sub stantially as described.
2. A drain pipe having a trap provided with a recessed seat for a cover and with a vertical intake section open at its upper end,` 4
to the intake end with a suitable soil pipe,
said vertical intake section composed of tvvo adjoiningvertical cylindrical sections both labove the seal portion of the trap and belovv the cover seat and of different diameters, the section of smaller diameter being below the other, each having an interior shoulder at the lower endtliereof against which an eX- pansible plug is adapted to be forced for the purpose of closing' the trap and its com- 'inunicating pipe at the intake end to permit testing, substantially as described.
the lower end of said intake portion, saidv portions of the intake section being; adapted f In Witness whereof, l, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, this 2nd day of January, A. D. nineteen hundred and twelve.
