To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK G. MA- LONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wabasha, in the county of Wabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writer Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following t o be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a typewriter attachment for feeding blank sheets of paper to the platen roller of a typewriter, and it is especially adapted for use on typewriters used by tele'graphoperators for feeding telegram blanks to the platen roller of the typewriter, on which messages are to be written as they are taken directly from the wire.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters in dicate 'like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a typewriter having secured thereto the improved attachment, some parts being broken away and some parts being sectioned on the line :12 (v of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, some parts being broken away and some parts bein removed; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation o the same, some parts being broken away and some parts being shown in section.
The improved attachment, as shown, is secured in working position to an Underwood Standard typewriter, and, for the purpose of this case, it is only necessary to note the frame 1, keys 2, carriage 3, platen roller 4:, paper table 5, androd 6, on which the paper holding devices, not shown, art attached.
Referring now in detail to the improved attachment, the numeral 7 indicates a pair of laterally spaced rearwardly extended brackets detachably secured to the frame 1 byset screws 8. Each of these brackets 7 is provided with vertically spaced upper and lower arms 9 and-10, respectively. A-table supporting bar 11 extends parallel with the platen roller 4, and is secured, at its ends, to the arms 9. Loosely journaled in the free ends of the arms 10 is a rock shaft 12 which extends parallel with the bar-11, and is provided with a key 13 which extends substantially the full length thereof.
A table 14 mounted on the bar 11, for longitudinal sliding movement, is secured to travel with the carriage 3 by a air of depending brackets 15. These brac ets 15 are rigidly secured, at their upper ends, to the table 1 1, and detachably secured, at their lower ends, to the upper longitudinal edge of the paper table 5 by clamping screws 16. Bearings 17 on the under side ofthe table 14, loosely rest on thebar 11,-and support the table 14 there above. The table 14: is provided, at its rear and side edges, with upturned flanges 18, and, at its front edge, there is a beveled abutment 19 which extends between the side flanges 18.'
An upwardly and forwardly inclined cam plate 20, and a forwardly and downwardly inclined primary deflecting plate 21, are located above the abutment '19, and are secured, at their ends, to the forwardly projecting ends of the side flanges 18. Secured to the intermediate portion of the primary plate 21 is a bracket 22, having a longitudinally extended slot 23 adapted to receive and hold a downwardly and rearwardly inclined secondary deflecting plate 24. The lower edge of the secondary deflecting plate 24 extends behind and rests against the rod 6 of the typewriter carriage.
Mounted to work over the table 14 is a re ciprocating feed device, comprising a longitudinally extended feed head 25, provided with a pair of connected rearwardly extended feed bars 26. As shown, the feed head 25 is preferably in the form of an inverted channel, having mounted therein a friction paper engaging facing 27 of soft rubber, or other suitable material. The abutment 19 is also preferably covered with a friction paper engaging facing 19, adapted to be engaged by the front edges of the blanks Z stacked on the table 14. Secured to the feed head 25, intermediately between the feed bars 26, is a pair of upwardly and forwardly projecting lugs 28, having journaled therebetween an anti-friction roller 29 adapted to engage the cam plate 20, at the limit of the forward movement of the feed head 25, and thereby lift said feed head out of engagement with the blank Z which is being fed over the abutment l9-by said feed head.
During the return movementof the feed head 25, the same is held out of engagement with the blanks Z by a rearwardly and downwardly extended leg 30; The upper end of the leg 30 is hinged to the lugs 28 by a pin 31. At the lower end of the leg 30 is journaled an anti-friction roller 32, arranged to run over the blanks Z. A light coiled spring 33 yieldingly holds the rollerequipped end of the leg 30 drawn toward the feed head 25. The rear flange 18 is cutaway at 34 to permit the feed bars 26 and roller-equipped endof the leg 30 to work. therethrough.
Slidably mounted on the rock shaft 12 is a pair of laterally spaced levers 35 col 1- nected by upper and lower webs 36. These levers 35 are held against rotary movement on the rock shaft 12 by the key 13, but are free for lateral sliding movement thereon. The upper or free ends of the levers 35 are pivotally secured to the rear ends of the feed bars 26 by a long pin 37.
A long key lever 38, in the form of a bell crank, is pivoted at 39 to a bearing 40, adjustably secured to the frame 1 by a set screw 41. "On the free end of the long arm of the key lever 38 is a key'42, and the short arm thereof is connected to a crank arm 43 rigidly secured to the rock shaft 12 by a long link 44. The levers 35 are moved laterally on the rock shaft 12, simultaneously with the movement of the table 14 on the bar 11, by a pair of depending arms 45 carried by said table, which embrace the levers 35. A coiled spring 46, anchored to the frame and key lever 38, normally holds the key 42 raised and the feed head 25 in a retracted position.
The operation of the improved attachment may be briefly stated as follows:-
The blanks Z on the table 14 are successively fed to the platen roller 4 under each depression of the key 42. In the normal position of the device, the feed head 25 loosely rests, under the action of gravity, on the rear marginal edge portion of the stack of blanks Z, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Under each depression of the key 42, the feed head 25 is moved forward, thereby carrying with it the uppermost blank in the stack. During the initial forward movement of the feed head 25, the
roller 32 engages the rear edge of the stack,
thereby moving the leg 30 upward against the tension of the spring 33. In this position of the leg 30, the spring 33 is not strong enough to lift the feed head 25 out of contact with the blanks. As the uppermost blank is moved forward by the feed head 25, the same travels over the abutment 19 and engages the primary deflecting plate 21, which directs the same downward. The feed head 25 also travels over the abutment 19, and, at the limit of its forward movement, the roller 29 engages the cam plate 20, thereby lifting the feed head 25 out of engagement with said blank and releasing the same. The released blank then engages the secondary plate 24 and is directed thereby onto the feed paper table 5. From the paper table 5, the blank is fed to the platen roller, in the customary manner, where the same can receive the impression from the keys. \Vhen the key 42 is released, the spring 46 lifts the key lever 38, which in turn moves the feed head 25 into a retracted position. During the return movement of the feed head 25, the leg 30 travels over the stack, and thereby supports the feed head 25 in an elevated position above the stack. At the limit of the return movement of the feed head 25, the roller 32 moves out of engagement with the stack, thereby permitting the feed head 25 to again engage the stack.
By manipulating the screws 8, 16 and 41, the entire attachment may be quickly applied to or removed from the typewriter.
While the device is shown attached to an Underwood Standard typewriter, it is, of course, understood that the same may be used on any standard typewriter.
What I claim is 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage and a platen roller mounted thereon, of a table, adapted to support a pile of blanks, connected to said carriage to travel therewith, means for feedingsaid blanks to the platen comprising a feed head, key actuated means for reciprocating said feed head over said table or the blanks thereon, and a cam for lifting said feed head out of engagement with the blank being fed at the limit of its forward movement.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen roller mounted thereon, of a table, adapted to support a pile of blanks, connected to said carriage to travel therewith, means for feeding said blanks to the platen comprising a feed head, key actuated means for reciprocating said feed head over said table or the blanks thereon, a cam for lifting said feed head out of engagement with the blank being fed, at the limit of its forward movement, and means for carrying said head out of contact with the blanks on said table, during its return movement.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, platen roller and cooperating paper table, supporting brackets detachably secured to the frame of said typewriter, a table supporting bar connecting said brackets, a table adapted to support a pile of blanks, slidably mounted on said bar and secured to said paper table to travel with said carriage, means for feeding said blanks to the platen comprising a springretracted feed head, key-actuated means for reciprocating said feed head over said table or the blanks thereon, a beveled abutment on said table, over which said blanks are fed, a deflector for guiding said blanks to the platen roller, a cam for lifting said feed head out of engagement with the blank being fed, at the limit ofits forward movement, a spring-retracted leg carried by said feed head, and arranged to travel over said blanks during the return movement of said head for holding the same out of engagement with said blanks, and a connection from said table to said blank-feeding means for causing said feed head to travel laterally therewith.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen roller, of a table adapted to support a-pile of blanks, connected to said carriage to travel therewith, means for feeding said blanks to the platen comprising a feed head, key-actuated means for reciprocating said feed head over said table or the blanks thereon, and means for causing said blank feeding means to travel laterally with said carriage and table.
