STACK-COVER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented 0a. 27, 1914.
Application filed March 24, 1914. Serial No. 826,921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mans HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bancroft, in the county of Cuming'and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stack-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates, to an improved protecting cover for hay stacks or the like and has for its primary object to provide a simple device of this character which may be quickly arranged in position upon the hay stack and will afiord a thorough protection therefor against the ravages of the elements.
My invention has for a more particular object to provide a cover for hay stacks embodying a plurality of sections each consisting of a series of metal plates and flexible connections between said plates, through the medium of which the two series of plates may be connected together, and a, curved or bowed crownsheet or plate adapted to be arranged at the apex of the hay stack and detachably connected to the flexible connections of said cover sections, the under side of said crown sheet being spaced from the top of the stack to permit of the passage of air over the stack and thus obviate liability of a conflagration by the crown sheet becoming highly heated.
My invention has for a further object to produce a device of the above character which is extremely simple and durable in its construction and when not in use may be compactly folded and stored away in a com paratively small space.
VVith the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved cover arranged upon a hay stack; Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates generally the side sections of the stack cover. Each of these sections consists of a plurality of sheet metal plates 6,
perferably galvanized sheet iron, which may be of any desired length. These sheet metal plates are corrugated as clearly shown in Fig. 1. of the drawings and the longitudinal edge of one plate laps upon the top of the contiguous longitudinal edge of an adjacent plate. These sheet metal plates are flexibly connected adjacent their ends by means of the chains 7, said chains being fixed by bolts, rivets or analogous fastening elements indicated at 8, to the respective plates adjacent one of their longitudinal edges. These chains are somewhat longer than the combined width of the several plates in each side section of the cover, and one of said chains is provided with a snap hook 9 for engagement with a ring 10 connected to the end of the corresponding chain on the other cover section. The other ends of the chain 7 extend downwardly below the cover sections when said cover is applied to the stack as shown in Fig.1 and suitable weights 11 are attached thereto so as tohold the cover sections in close engagement uponthe hay stack and prevent the same from being lifted therefrom by wind gusts.
12 designates a crown section which is also constructed of galvanized sheet iron and corrugated in a similar manner to the plates of the side sections of the cover. This crown sheet however, is transversely curved or bowed and when arranged upon the top or apex of the hay stack, it will be observed that the under side of said crown sheet is spaced from the stack, thus allowing the free entrance and travel of air through the space between the hay stack and said crown sheet. The edges of this crown sheet lap upon the longitudinal edges of the uppermost plates of the side sections of the cover. Said crown sheet is further provided adjacent its opposite ends and at each of its longitudinal edges with short chains 18 having snap books 14 on one of their ends for connection with the links of the chain 7. It will be apparent that when the side sections and the crown section of the cover are arranged upon the hay stack, in the manner above stated, rain cannot enter between the lapping edges of the several sheet metal plates, but is directed downwardly from the center of the stack upon each side thereof by the corrugations formed in the cover plates.
Any desired number of the corrugated plates may be employed in each side section of the cover and the arrangement of said side sections and the crown sheets may be continued ad infim'tum longitudinally of the stack in accordance with its length.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and arrangement of the several elements as well as the manner of application and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood.
The device may be very easily and quickly applied to the hay stack and afiords a thorough protection therefor. When the cover is removed from the stack, the crown sheet is disconnected from the side sections, and the plates of said side sections folded upon each other so as to present a very compact arrangement, thus admitting of the storing of the cover in a comparatively restricted space.
It will of course be understood that while I have shown and described the present pre ferred form and construction of the several parts of my invention, the device is nevertheless susceptible of considerable modification therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
-what is claimed is:
A stack cover comprising side sections, each consisting of a plurality of plates, the continuous longitudinal edges of which are overlapped, a plurality of chains arranged transversely of the side sections and fastened to each of the plates, the ends of the chains extending beyond the longitudinal edges of the side sections, weightsattached to the lower ends thereof and adapted to be suspended upon opposite sides of the stack and normally hold the side sections in position thereon, the other ends of said chains extending upwardly to the top ofthe stack, means for detachably connecting the upper ends of said chains, an arcuate crown section arranged over the apex of the stack, the longitudinal edges of which overlap the adjacent plates of the side sections, a plurality of relatively short chains fastened to the longitudinal edges of the crown and having their other ends detachably connected to the side sections to retain said crown in position over the top of the stack.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
