FOLDING TRUNK Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 31, 1913. Serial No. 758,078.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ALFRED VVARNE, citi-,
zenof the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to an improvement in trunks;
The primary object. of the invention is to provide a trunk which, when not in use, may
pintle pins of the hinge .memberswhich are be collapsed Ito occupy a comparatively,
small space. i 4
A further object of the invention is to so construct the sections of which the trunk is formed that it may be readily taken apart and the sections assembled in a compact acka e which ma be convenientl trans- ,P :1 Y
tion, reference is to be had tothe following description and accompanying drawings,;in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the trunk, the lid being raised; Fig, 2 is a perspectiveview with the lid closed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the front wall and the tray being removed; Fig. i is a longitudinal section; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the trunk in its folded position; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the trunk folded; Fig.
7 is a detail view of the connecting means for the side and end sections; and Fig. 58 is a detail view showing the manner in which the tray prevents thedi'splacement of the secured to the'wall of the trunk.-
. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description'and indicated in all the views of. the drawings by the same reference characters.
Broadly, the present invention contemplates the provision of a trunk formed of sections which may bedisassembled, certain of the sections after being disassembled,
forming a jpocketfor receiving :member in Patented o afzo, 1914.
which the other sections may be placed, the
strap fastening means of the trunk being so arranged that it may, be used to securely hold thesections together. i
In the drawings, 10 designates ofthe trunk. The endwalls 11 are hingedly so the bottoml connected torthe edges 12 of the bottom, thel hinges 13 being secured to the inner faces of 14 and15 are the, same-height as the end the bottom and end walls. The side members 6,5
wallsll; These sidemembers are hingedly s 2 connected to the end walls, the hinge con-' nection being illustrated in detail in Fig.
7. This hinge connection consists of the hinge plates 17 disposedfin pairs with their" pintle lugs interlocking in the usual mannein There are four sets of these connections provided, one, set being arranged at each corner of the trunk.
.Each .set of hinge plates is connected by rod 18. The upper terminals of the rods'lS are formed withan extension 19' which is provided with afiat face on which the trunk tray 20 rests. 1 It will thus be noted that the tray '20 is supported at each corner of the trunk, the tray maintaining the rods 18 j f within the pintlelugs, the-tray holding the rods- 18 against accidental displacement.
The tray iszalso supportedby strips 21 secured to the innerfaces of the end walls 11.-
It will-be. seen bythisconstruction, that the side and end'walls are "hingedly. connected, and that the side walls] may be removed from the; end walls by lifting the. rods 18 out of. the pintle lugs of the hinge plates 17.
A strip 22 ishingedly connected .to the sidesectionl i, which forms the rear wall of the trunk, each pair ofhinge plates 23 having their pintle lugs connectedby apin 24;
which may be conveniently removed to separate the section 14 from the strip 22. These pintle pins are supportedagainst displace ment by lugs 25'arranged on the rear wall of the tray.
hingedly connected to the strip 22. This top section is provided with the end members 27 and the side members28 which formacontinuation of the cnd'fland sidesections when the lid is closed.
The top section or lid 26 ofth trunk is f "The tray 20sconsistsof the bottomboard A '29 to which the longitudinalmembers 3.0
are hingedly connected, whereby they may faces of the longitudinal; members 30 are .1
foldgupon the' bottomfboard. The inner formed adjacent each end and at point intermediate their ends with guideways 31 which receive the terminals of the partitioning members 32. These partitioning members are inserted within the guide ways, thereby maintaining the longitudinal members 30 at right angles to the bottom board 29. By this construction, it will be noted that the tray may be collapsed by removing the partitioning members and folding the longitudinal members 30 on the bottom board.
When it is desired to collapse the trunk,- the tray is removed and the partitioning members withdrawn from the guide ways 31, in order that the longitudinal members may be folded upon'the bottom member 29, the partitioning members 32 being placed 25 upon the board with their end portions disposed beneath the longitudinal members 30. The pins 18 are then removed and the end sectionsll folded upon the bottom 10, the bottom being formed with recesses which 3 receive the tray supports 21 in order that the end sections,when folded, may be disposed flush withthe bottom. 7 a When the side section 14, which forms the rear wall of the trunk, is removed, the pin- 35 )tle pins that connect the hinge plates 23 are withdrawn, separating the section 1a from the strip 22. The side sections it and 15 are then placed together, their faces which carry the hinge plates contacting with each other, the pintle lugs of all'the plates 17 of one section being brought into'interlocking relation with thepintle lugs of the plates 17 of the othersection. The rods 18 are then inserted, securely locking the side sections together. The strip 22 is swung upon its hinge until its end portions 36 contact with the edges 37 of the end members 27 of the top, thus forming a rectangular receptacle. The tray in its collapsed form is placed within the receptacle thus formed, and the side sections 14 and 15, which are locked together, are placed upon the tray.
The bottom section, to which is hingedly connected the end walls 11, is then placed upon the side sections 14: and 15. The side and end sections 27 and 28 of the top section or lid 26 are provided with an extension 38 which, when thesections are thus assembled, embraces theedge of the bottom 10,,
6 forming a compact, substantially rectangular package which occupies comparatively little space and which may be conveniently transported. It will be obvious that with the sections assembled as described above,
the straps 33 and 34 may be connected and the sections effectually held together. The sections are so arranged within the rectangular receptacle formed by the lid that relative movement of the same is prevented.
Particular attention is called to the simplicity of the connecting means, and to the fact that the sections may be conveniently disassembled without the use of cumbersome spring catches and locks. It will also be seen that the entire structure may be easily and economically manufactured, and that the connecting meansfor the sections occupies comparatively small space within the trunk, said connecting means being so disposed that clothing which is placed Within the trunk will not be torn through contact with the same. Attention is also called to the manner in which the side and end sections are connected, and to the fact that the 1 tray forms a locking means for this con nection. It will be noted that when the trunk is set up for use, it is as substantial as the usual form of trunk, and handling of the trunk cannot displace the connecting means or in any way endanger the trunk being partially collapsed when in use, the sections being so connected as to coact with each other to form a substantial structure.
'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent is:
1. A trunk including a bottom, end sections hingedly connected to the bottom, side sections, a connection between the side and end sections, said connection comprising interlocking plates, the plates of one side section being disposed to interlock with the plates of the other side section when the sections are disassembled, a strip hingedly connected to one of the side sections, and a lid hingedly supported by the strip, said lid and strip forming a substantially rectangular receptacle when the sections are disassembled. I
' 2. A trunk including a bottom, end sections hingedly connected to the bottom, side sections, hinge plates carried by the side and end sections, said hinge plates being formed with pintle lugs, the pintle lugs of the hinge plates of the end sections interlocking with 115 the pintle lugs of the hinge plates of the side sections, and a tray support consisting of a rod disposed to extend through the interlocking pintle lugs of the hinge plates and secure the side and end sections together, said rod being formed with a fiattened terminal disposed at right angles to its body portion on which the tray of the trunk is adapted to rest.
'3. A trunk including a bottom, end sections hingeclly connected to the bottom, side sections, a connection between the side and end sections, said connection comprising interlocking'plates, a member constituting a 1 tray support disposed to maintain said 130 plates in interlocking engagement, the plates of one side section being disposed to interlock with the plates of the other side section when the sections are disassembled.
