FARE AND TRANSFER TICKET. f
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 20,1914.
Application filed September 26, 1311. Serial No. 651,416.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES L. DoNNnLLY, citizen of the United States, v'residing' at Philadelphia, ini-the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, vhave invented certain new andv useful Improvements `in Fare and Transfer Tickets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to transfer ticket` systems designed primarily for use by Street railway companies, and the primary aim of the invention is to prevent peculation onr the part of the railway employees and at the same time to enable passengers to secure a rebate.
It is customary for street ,railway companies to ysell tickets at a reducedrate when a number of tickets are provided at a time, for example, at the rate of six for twentyfive cents when the regular single fare is i-ive'cents, but underthis system a dishonest employee could substitute tickets for the cash fares collectedy by him, and in this profits which would i otherwise Iaccrue to them through the collection yof cash fares.
Thefpresent invention, therefore, aims toy provide transferticket system by which vkpeeulation on the part of employees may be to himself.
prevented, and at the Sametime the passengers will receive va rebate, equivalent to the amount saved by them in purchasingl thev f ,view of an excess check used in connection 4with the ticket shown in Figs. l and 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description andindicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters'.4
The invention contemplates, as before stated, the provision yof av transfer ticket and an excess check, and of these two the trans, fer ticket is shown in Figs. lxand Qf'of the.k
drawing, and is indicated in general by the reference numeral l,` it being perforated as at 2 to form a coupon 3 which may be readily detached from the body of the ticket. Upon the body of thev transfer ticket near thereof there are printed the wordsFrac tional-transferticket, as 'indicated by the numeral 4, and below these words the name ofl the comp-any 'issuing the transfer tickets,
as indicated at 5. Below the name of the company thereis printeda statement 6 substantiallyvas follows This yfractional ticket y denotes the yvalue of 5/6 ofa cent. :Five of the top ATENT onnicn.
these tickets will ibe :accepted p as one fare, provided the required numberv be "presented with'ffive cents, upon the receipt '.ofwhich theconductor will furnish the yholder with van excessjcheck which in turn maybe .ten-u deredeas fare. This statement-is followed by a facsimilesignatureofthe president' or other oiicer of the company,"as indicated by the numeral 7.
thereis printed a statement as follows A punch markiabove the red line denotesn Belowszthis signature vP. M. hour and belowthe red line, A. `MQ j hour. v'Void one hourafter time canceled,
as at 8.- Columns 9 above` `the words Frac-'Q` tional transfer ticket are dividedby vertical lines 10 `into spaces upon which are; y
printe'dnumerals indicating the days of any monthyas indicated `atll.` At theright of the words Fractional ,transfer-ticket there is printed the number ofy the ticket, as at 12, and the months ofthe year are printed as at 13 in a vertical column atkthe extreme right ofthe ticket. TheV ticket is divided byy printed lines at its lower edge, into a ktransversely extending series of spaces 14 inl which are printed numerals 15 indicating the hours of any day, there being also printed upontheface of the ticket aline 16 in red or some other-distinctive color and y f this line `,extends through the entire series of thehour indicating numerals 15.
Upon'vthe corresponding face of ythedef tachable coupon 8 there is printed at the top,
thereof, the name of the division issuing"` the transfer ticket, as for example Baker street division, as at'17vinFig. 1 ofthe drawing, and below the name 17 the words Transfer coupon, as indicated at 18.y ,Thek
number of the ticket is printed as at 19 immediatelyybelow the words Transfer cou pon and below the number there is printed,l
upon `rthesaid face of the ticket'a statement .20, substantially as follows: This coupon `denotes that the entire ticket is a transfer.;y
11o fr Void if detached. See other side. The year is printed as at 21 at the bottom of the coupon 3 directly opposite the left hand endV of the series of hour indicating figures 15. The words Not transferable and a statement of the points at which the transfer is valid, are printed upon the opposite side of the body of the ticket, as shown at 22 in Fig. 2 0f the drawing, and upon this side of the transfer coupon, may be printed any qualifying statements relating to the use of the transfer tickets. y
'Ihe excess check employed in connection with the transferk ticket is shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawing and has printed upon one face the words Excess check, as indicated at 23. rIhefe is also printed upon this face' of the excess check the name of the railway division and the company using` the excess checks' and transfer tickets, as indicated at Q4, and alsoa statement 25 substantially as follows This excess check denotes` the value of five cents and upon its presentation as fare', the conductor will furnish the holder with one fractional ticket. This statement is followed by a facsimile signature ofthe president or otherioflicer of the company. Supposing the regular cash fare to be five cents,` the fractional transfer ticket and eX- cess check are used in the following manner. Should a passenger desire to ride at the rate of 4-1/6I cents (the actual fare) when the passenger takes advantage of the lrebate offered by the railway company, ie pays the conductor five cents and the conductor will then furnish him with a fracf tional ticket, minus the transfer coupon. On
the other hand if the passenger should desire a transfer, he should so` inform the conductor and upon receipt of five cents the conductor will furnish the passenger with a fractional transfer ticket, that is the fractionalv ticket with the transfer coupon attached. Before handing this .entire ticket to the passenger the conductor will punch thereon the month, date, and hour.
It will be understood that a passenger obtaining a transfer willfnct be allowed a rebate, nor could he use the fractional part or body of his ticket as av rebate even if the transfer coupon should be detached, for the reason that the punch marks in the said fractional part of the tra-nsfer ticket would indicate that the same. was issued-as a transfer.` As before stated, it is an aim of the invention to obviate the use of transfery privileges accordedpassengers, and this is accomplished by the use of the fractional transfer ticket, inasmuch as it would not be likely that a passenger wouldpay for la transfer which he does not need and then give the transfer to some other person. v
The purpose of the excess check is to keep a record of the 4fractional tickets pre sented as fare, and this is done in the following manner: Vhen a passenger tenders live of the fractional transfer tickets t0- gether with five cents in cash, the conductor will accept the five fractional transfer tickets as a full fare, andl will at the same time give to the passenger one of the excess checks shown in Fig, 3. This check is acceptable as a full fare, and upon receipt thereof, from the passenger, at any subsequent time, the' conductor will give the pas` senger a fractie-nal transfer ticket either punched for use as a transfer or not punched and with the transfer coupon detached.
It will be understood' that by employing the excess checks, the conductors are compelled to register the fractional tickets received from passengers, and peculation in this manner is prevented.
It will be observed that a conductor must return to the company nve cents for each fractional transfer ticket and excess check4 issued by him.
Having thusl described the invention what n is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a ticket having a detachable portion, the ticket having thereon data indicating that when the said portion is detached the ticket will have a rebate value and that whenthe ticket is issued with the said portion attached the ticket will constitute a transfer, and"` an excess check having4 thereon data indicating that it is acceptable as fare and has a value' equal to the regular fare plus the rebate value of the iirstanentio-ned ticket.
2; In combination, a ticket bearing data indicating that whentissued without cancellation of ay certain portion thereof the entire ticket will constitute a transfer" and thatwhen the ti cket is issued' with cancellation of said portion the remainder of the ticket will have a rebate value, and an excess check having a value iny excessv of the regular fare to be paid, the rebate ticket having a value equal to the value of the excess check in excess of the regular fare to be'paid.
3. In combination, a rebate ticket having a valuel equalto fraction of the regular cash fare and acceptable, in predetermined numbers as fare, and an excess checkl purchasable at the time of tendering a number of the rebate tickets, as fare, the said excess check having a value equal to the full cash fare.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceV of two witnesses.
