UNITED ST PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ A. FULLER, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, Assm von 'ro THE J. n. ivinnoor'r COMPANY, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, nooaronn'rron OENEW JERSEY.
BAG-rAsrnNEm 1 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O t 20 1914 Applicationiiled February 5, 1912. Serial No. 675,515.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANZ city of Newark, in the countyof Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the followlng 1s a full,
clear, and exact description, 2 such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of .reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in that class of bag fasteners for bag frames, which are especially adapted for pocket books, satchels, purses and the. like, and the invention relates more fully to, a novel construction of a locking or holdated holding catch or latch which can be.
easily manipulated.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents a front elevation of one form of bag or purse frame, with a catch or fastener embodying the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 represents a fragment-ary longitudinal section, illustrating the arrangement of the spring clip and the spring for actuating the catch or fastener. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section takenon lines ww of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 represents a front elevation .of the fastener with spring clip and spring attached. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal view of the fastener partly in section; and Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the plate, forming a art of the fastener, provided with an integral spring holding element.
Similar characters of referenceare employed in all of the said above views, to indicate corresponding parts.
usual pair of frame sections, (either chan- A FoIaLnn," a citizen of the United States, residing in the neled or angled), which are'pivotally connected at their lower end portions by means ofsuitable pins or rivets 0, or they may be pivotally connectedwith each other in any other well-known manner. One of said frame sectionsas b is provided in its upper surface with a centrally arranged suitable opening for the reception of an extension formed on the catch member, to be presently described," and the. other frame section; as a is provided witha suitablenosing or projection at forced outfrom the metal from which said frame section is made, or any other suitable means may be provided, designed to be brought into holding engagement with a suitable indentation e or similar means formed in the under side of the catch member, to firmly secure the bag frame sections or mem bers in locked position. The catch member which may be of any desired form or configuration consists preferably of the plate f,
formed from a single flat piece of metal,.provided with a downwardly projecting spring.- holding member or portion 9, extending at a rightangle, orapproximately so,,having formed thereon, holdingmeans extending preferably the entire length of the downwardly projecting spring-holding member, by bending the metal thereof to form a bear- 'ing or channel is for the reception of the spring to be presently described. To provide a suitable finger piece or lift for the catch member, I have shown achambered base it provided with integral extensions 71., mounted thereon, said extensions passing through suitable apertures in the plate 1 and closed down upon the under side of said plate. A convenient finger piece 2' is mounted upon said base,.which may be secured thereto in any convenient or desired manner. The plate 1 is provided with an indentation 6, so that when the bag frame sections are closed, the nosing or projection (i will be received into said. indentation e and firmly secure the bagframe sections in locked posiable torsion spring j, one end of which is passed through thebearing k of the springholding member and restsagainst the under side of theframe section and the other end i of which is secured to the spring clip Z, now In the drawings, a and 5 indicate the a to be described. This spring clip in its preferred form, or when used in connection with a frame member of channeled crosssection, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, consists of a single piece of suitable metal channeled and of a dimension and shape approximating that of the channeled frame section to which it is secured by being forced therein. This clip is provided with a centrally arranged depressed portion m, said portion being further provided with openings n through which one end of the spring passes, in which it is firmly held and preventedifrom rotation or accidental-displacement. Whenthe spring has inthis manner been arranged in position, and se'cured'to the spring clip and catch member, it, together with the spring holding means on the catch member, will limit the oscillatory movement of said catch member. In this manner, the movable catch will be retained in properloclring or holding position. When the catch member is raised, theproj ection d "will. become disengaged from the indenta 'tion 6' in "the plate y, thereby placing the sprin-g'j under sufficient tension that when the operator releases his or her hand from the catch, the spring will again cause the said catch member to return to its normal= position. The holding or looking operation of the catch member thus 'operatively connected with the frame section b, is caused by snapping or forcing the edge of the usual form of indentation 6 over the usual projeci tion' "03 upon the frame member a in the wellknownmanner. Y Experience has cl'emo'nstrated'that the organization above described, is a practical and eificient one for accomplishing the ends sought by this invention. The construction, I may, however, be varied in detail by those skilled "in such matters, without departing from the invention.
I claim: v I
l. The combination with a pair of jaws, one of which has a slot therein, of a catch member provided with a means of pivotal connection extending through the slot of said last mentioned jaw, and having interlocking engagement with the other jaw, said 'catch member having one side thereof provided with an integral extension folded back upon itself, the folded extension projecting through said slot, a channel-shaped spring clip frictionally secured to the inner portion of one of said jaws and in close proximity to the-pivotal connection of said catch member, said clip being provided with apertures and a central depressed portion, and a torsion spring, one end of which is secured in the apertures and central depression of said clip and the other end of which is secured to and passes through the folded extension of the 'catch member.
2. The combination with a pair of jaws,
a catch member mounted upon one of said FRANZ A. FULLER.
