BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 6, 1911.
Patented Oct. 13, 1914. Serial No. 647,941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER FRANCIS GAUNT, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Warstone Parade, in the city of Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, manufacturer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to those buttons which are formed of leather or of compressed horn or of hoof or of comparatively hard penetrable composition the body part having secured to the back of it a metal back plate and a loop for the attachment of the button. Buttons of this kind, particularly such as are made of leather, are extensively used on khaki uniforms and are also used by civilians and others on coats, jackets and other garments.
The object of this invention is to combine a leather or other said button with a metal letter, number, device, brand, badge or ornament or the like fixed on the front of the button so as to be practically flush with the front face of the same, and this is accomplished as I will describe by referring to the accompanying drawings, on which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of a leather. or other said button having a distinguishing figure 8 fixed thereto in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation and Fig. 4 is a plan of the metal figure part of the button separately.
My invention is carried out as follows I provide a metallic letter, number, device, brand, badge, or ornament, or the like, preferably stamped from sheet metal, such for instance, as the number 8 shown in Fig. 3 and marked 1, having at the back of it one or more projecting spikes or tangs 2, adapted to pierce the leather or other solid substance 3, of which the button is formed. 'By means of dies, but preferably, worked in a stamp or press, the letter, number, device, brand, badge, or ornament, or the like is compressed into the front surface of the button as shown in Fig. 1, so as to be practically flush with the said front surface and is there secured by the tang or tangs 2, the ends of which will come into contact with the metal back plate 4 of the button and thereby bent or hooked, to some extent thus making the figural (or the letter, device brand, badge, or ornament or the like) perfectly secure as in Fig. l. The metal back plate 4 has the usual metal loop 6 for the attachment of the button.
The number 1, or the letter, device, brand, badge, or ornament or the like is by preference made with chamfered edges 5 as shown so that when it is compressed into the face of I the button as aforesaid the leather or other substance of the button closes over the chamfered edges as in Fig. land thus formsa kind of dovetail attachment which assists in securing the letter, number, device, brand, badge, or ornament or the like in position.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination, a member having a solid penetrable body portion,"a metal back plate with an attachment loop fixed thereto, a metal ornament or the like provided with chamfered edges and backwardly projecting spikes, said ornament being pressed into the body of the member so that its outer surface is flush with the front of said body, the length of said spikes being such that the ends thereof will be bent upwardly by contact with saidmetal plate, and so that the substance of the body will extend over said chamfered edges of the ornament when the grlament has been inserted in the penetrable In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER FRANCIS GAUNT.
