To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR M. LEIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Genoa, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Annunciators, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to annunciators and is of particular utility in connection with annunciators for telephone exchange purposes in which embodiment my invention takes the form of what are called drops and jacks, preferably of the combined drop and jack style.
My invention herein covers certain features of a combined drop and jack structure, other features involving different improvements of this structure being claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 681,443, filed March 4, 1912.
The improved drop and jack structure herein has a number of advantageous features which, combine to produce a useful result, some of which features however being capable of independent use. I confine my claims in this particular application to the electromagnetic portion of the combined drop and jack and its associated features and reserve the remaining features for my said co-pending application.
In describing the invention herein, I will describe it as applied more particularly to a drop and jack structure of the telephone switchboard type, it being understood, of course, that within the scope of the appended claims the specific features set forth below are susceptible of wider application than given in the said specific following description.
One important feature of the electromagnetic portion of the structure herein consists in providing a removable coil and shell structure of such a character that the ad-' justment of the armature under the control of this coil need not be varied even though coils having cores of greater or less length may be employed. In the operation of drops and jacks of this character, replacement is necessary of the coils as they burn out in the ordinary operation, and these coils must be replaced by other coils. probability will have a core substantially longer or shorter than the core of the coil previously in place. With many of the older forms a res-adjustment of the armature under the control of this coil is necessary to accommodate for this changed size of the core. In accordance *ith one form of my invention I arrange the armature in close proximity to the pole piece and so arrange the interconnection between the pole piece and the core of the coil that inequalities in the length of the core are accommodated for. The adjustment between the armature and the pole piece may then be permanent. I provide a suitable framework which may be fastened to the front plate of the drops and jacks. This framework may carry the armature and its associated pole piece and upon this framework the coil and its core, if one is necessary, may be placed, suitable means being provided to hold he coil with its core in place. I will describe this and other features of my invention more in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings setting forth my invention as applied to a telephone drop and jack structure, in which:

I utilize a preferably metallic front plate 1 which car ies the individual units, that is, the individual drops and jacks and this framework is provided with drop shutters 2, 2. To this front plate and preferably insulated therefrom by means of the insulating strip 3 a framework 4- is attached by means of the screws 5, 5 and 6, 6. This framework extends backwardly of the front plate 1 as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. This framework has a downwardly extending bracket 7 which is engaged by the screws 6, 6 and forwardly extending arms 8, 8 bent inwardly and engaged by the screws 5, 5. This framework carries near its forward extremity an armature 9 pivoted by means of the wire pivot 10 which extends through this armature and through the arms 8, S of the framework. An antifreezing tip 11 is preferably riveted to this armature. This armature carries a shutter arm 12 preferably riveted therein, which shutter arm isdesigned to control the shutter 2. Within the framework and between the arms 8, 8 a partition 13 is mounted and held in place by screws 14, 14:, which screws engage arms 15, 15 extending forwardly of this partition, This partition has outwardly extending arms 43, 43 which engage slots provided in the framework a to thereby prevent the said partition from rotating, all as more clearly shown in. the detail of Fig. 9. This partition has a central, preferably circular, aperture 16 to accommodate a. core of the coil as will appear later. The par tition 13 is preferably not made of magnetic material but carries a pole piece 17 preferably riveted thereto by means of the rivets 18. This pole piece 17 has a central aperture conforming to the central aperture 16 in the pole piece 13 and these apertures registcr. The pole piece may be rounded at its lower extremity as shown more in detail in Fig. 7 but its upper face is preferably straight and horizontal so as to be in close proximity to the armature 9. This pole piece andarmature cooperate to cause the armature to respond to energizations of the drop coil,the arrangement of which coil will be explained presently.
To magnetically energize the pole piece 17 to thereby control the armature 9, I provide acoil 19, which coil is wound upon a core 20, which core projects forwardly of the coil. Fiber end plates 21 are provided between which the coil is wound upon the core. The rear fiber end plate carries contact elements 22, 22 to which the terminals of the coil are attached as these terminals come through the openings 23,, 23 in said fiber endplat'e. The core 20 when the drop is in place as shown in Fig. 3 projects through the openings in the pole piece 17 and partition 13 and thus this core is in magnetic relation with the pole piece 17 to thereby control the armature 9. It will be seen that the length of the projecting pole piece has no injurious influence upon its magnetic relation to the armature 9 as the structure is such as to accommodate for pole pieces of any length if within given reasonable limits. The coil 19 is provided with a shell 24, which shell 24 is split longitudinally as shown in Fig. 8. This shell is preferably loose upon the drop coil andv readily slips over the same. The coil at one of its extremities has a metallic mounting arm 25 which encircles the core and which on its opposite sides has insulating strips 26., 26 so that this mounting arm is insulated from the coil or core. This mounting arm 25 projects downwardly when the coil is in place as shown more clearly in Fig. 4 and it is provided with a slotted extremity 27 so that it may be held in place by means of a screw 28 upon a downwardly depending arm 29 of the framework 4. The shell 2% is slightlycut away at 30 to accommodate this arm. It will be seen with what facility the drop coil and shell may be removed from the. structure. In order to effect this removal the screw 28 is loosened and the coil with its shell swung around so as to release grooved extension 27 from engagement with the screw23, whereafter the coil and shell may be withdrawn from its position upon the framework t as the core 20 is readily withdrawn from the elements 17 and 13. When the coil and shell are in place the front end of this structure is held in place by the core resting within the elements 17 and 13 and the rear end is acid in place by means of the arm Connecting links 31 and 32 respectively connect the contact segments 22, 22 with the drop springs 33 and 34. These connecting links 31 and have bayonet slots similar to that provided in the extension 27 so that they can be readily swung about and released from engagement with their retaining screws. The framework 4 which thus carries the drop coil and armature is made of a piece of punched material as is readily apparent from the structure as shown in the drawings and this same framework is provided with a downwardly extending plate 35 preferably riveted to the said framework, which plate carries the drop springs 36, 37 and 38, these springs being insulated as is well understood. This framework likewise carries a restoring spring 39 bifurcated at one extremity to form the arms'lO, which arms are riveted at 41 to the said framework 4. This restoring spring has a depending lug 2 to be engaged by the plug and lifted upwardly to restore the shutter 2.
Having thus set forthone specific form of my improved annunciator, it will be readily seen that many modifications may be made which would yet embody the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a framework, of a re movable coil and core mounted in said framework, a pole piece for said core, and an armature, said pole piece and armature being permanently mounted in said framework independently of the mounting of said coil and core.

4. A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature permanently mounted in said framework, a pole piece in inductive relation to said armature permanently mounted in said framework, and a removable coil and core secured in said framework, independently of the mounting of said armature and pole piece, said core being in inductive relation to said pole piece.
5. A device of the character described having a framework, an armature and a pole piece permanently mounted in said framework, and a removable coil and core mounted in said framework, said core entering said pole piece to accommodate for different lengths of core, said armature when attracted moving toward the axis of said core.
6. A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature permanently mounted in said framework, a pole piece in inductive relation to said armature permanently mounted in said framework, and a removable coil and core secured in said framework independently of the mounting of said armature and pole piece, said core being in inductive relation to said pole piece, said armature when attracted moving toward the axis of said core.
7 A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a partition mounted in and transversely of said framework, and a pole piece mounted upon said partition associated with said armature.
8. A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a partition transversely of said framework, and a pole piece mounted upon said partition associated with said armature, and a coil mounted in said framework having" a core, said core being in inductive relation to said pole piece, and said coil and core being removable and being fixedly secured in said framework independently of the mounting of said armature and pole piece.
9. A device of the character described comprising a framework of magnetic material, an armature of magnetic material mounted in said framework, a partition of nonmagnetic material transversely of said framework, and a pole piece of magnetic material mounted upon said partition associated with said armature.

In a device of the character described the combination with a framework, of an armature mounted in said framework, a partition mounted transversely within said framework, a pole piece on said partition, a coil having a protruding; core mounted in said framework, said protruding core coopcrating with said pole piece to support one extremity of said coil and core, and means for mounting the other extremity of said coil and core to the said framework.

A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a pole piece in inductive relation to said armature mounted in said framework, a removable coil and core secured in said framework independently of the mounting of said armature and pole piece, said core being in inductive relation to said pole piece, and a removable shell carried by said coil.

A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a partition transversely of said framework, a pole piece mounted upon said partition associated with said armature, a coil having a core secured in said framework independently of the mounting of said armature and pole piece, and a removable shell carried by said coil.
19, A device of the character described having a framework, a pole piece mounted in said framex'vork, and a coil having a core mounted in said framework, said core being held at one extremity in said pole piece, and means for securing the other extremity of said core to the framework.
20 A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a pole piece mounted in said framework permanently adjusted with respect to said armature, and a removable coil having a protruding core adapted to extend into said pole piece when said coil is mounted in said framework to thereby accommodate for diflerent lengths of core, without changing the air gap between the p ole piece and core.
21. A device of the character described comprising a framework, an armature mounted in said framework, a pole piece mounted in said framework permanently adjusted with respect to said armature, a removable coil having a core adapted when said coil is mounted in said framework to have inductive relation with saidpole piece, and means whereby the inductive relation between said core and pole piece is unaffected by slight differences in size of said core.
