In practising my invention I employ a chamber, which is preferably tubular, and which is provided at its ends with means for attaching sections of a feed pipe thereto whereby the chamber itself constitutes a feed pipe section that is alined with the with. The cylindrical or longitudinal wall of the chamber is providedwith cylindrical bosses for receiving closure caps, one of these bossesaifording access to a charcoal or carbon holding compartment and theother affording access to a trap space surrounding a pipethat projects intolthe chamber toward but short of the carbon; containing P boss15 I thread the exterior of this boss and portion of the chamber. By this construction I have provided a very simple form of filter which may be readilyinserted in feed or other liquid conducting pipes without disturbing the alinenient of the pipe sections. between which the filter is disposed and permitting the formation of a filter towhich access may readily be had.
I will explain my inventionmore fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in whichi Figure 1 illustrates a device of my invention as it may be installed; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 2 2 of Fig. ;1; and

The screens 10 and ll'prevent upward passage of some of the foreign matter that will not settle around the pipe 20, while the carbon 14 serves to remove the smaller particles of foreign mat ter and to purify the upwardly flowing water.
It will be observed that the filtering medium, by filling the chamber adjacent its discharge end, serves definitely to divide the chamber into one portion that is exclusively for the accommodation of the filtering medium and another portion which is exclusively reserved for the trap space whereby all impurities that are collected in the trap space are forced to lodge under the filtering medium so as to be accessible through the opening affording admittance to the trap space.
From time to'timethe trap should be inspected and cleaned. To this end the lower portion of the cylindrical or longitudinal wall of the chamber 1 is provided with an outsetting hollowcylindric al boss 22 through which access may be had to the trap space about the pipe 20. I thread the exterior of this boss and screw upon it an interiorly threaded cap 23 and interpose between the cap and the end of the boss a packing disk 24: for preventing the leakage of water through the boss. The cap 23 is provided with a nutlike outsetting enlargement 25 to we enable the application of a wrench for applying and removing the cap.
