Description

K. V'OLLER.
GUN CARRIAGE. -APPLIOATION FILED NOV.8,1912.

A conrpne'rroiv or GERMANY;

. sou-CARRIAGE.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that- I, K R VISLLER, en-,
' gineer, a subject-of the German Emperor,
residing at 12 ScharnhorststrasselDusseh dorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -'GuI.1-Carr1ages and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same. vSiege guns are generallylpivoted in bearmgs on fixed platforms, in order to be readily moved, especially laterall as for example in firing at air ships.- I the axle of the gun carriage is held in a completelyclosed-in bearing, the platform must be so broad and heavy as to resist the moments t nding to tilt the carriage, there being no assistance from a spade, and the transportation of su'ch aplatform' presents considerable difliculty. This drawback isobviated according to the present invention by mounting the wheel axle on a pivoted frame in such mannerthat the axle and carriage canslide in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the gun.
The accompanying drawing represents a constructionaccording to the invention, in
which- Figures 1,- 2, and -3 are side elevations,
. The axle of the gun carriage is not forked bearings g, in which the blocks in of the axle can slide freely. The bearings g are shown as beingat the ends of-a forked 3 frame j represent the carriage when the axle is displaced respectively toward the rear and front of the bearing- This manner of pivoting allows the trail d to be moved up or down, so thatthe end, i of' the trail is always-in contact with the ground at the moment of firing. The trail can be very easily raised,
' :when the carriage is'to be turned, and can adapt itself to any, inequalities of the Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 8, 1912. '-Serial n). 730,254

ground, without necessitating the loosening of the tension rods. 4
Since theend iof the. trail cannot bein- -serted in theground, a large sle'- h-sha-ped plate is is pllaced below the' end 0 the "trail to allow 1; e carriage 'and frame f to: be turned on the pivot by the traversing-gear about the pivot socket I, screwed to the platform 6, without. liftin the trail d.-. The
a lateral motion is transmitted from the to the carriage, or conversely, by the tension rods, and for thisreason' two rods are preferably used.- I
I claim'as my invention:
1; The combination with a, gun carriage, of a' support for the carriage comprising .a frame having sockets in which the fwheel axle of the carriagemay slijdewith the carnage in a direction substantially parallelto the longitudinal axis of the gun, and means -c'onnectingth'e gun carriage to said support ata point beneah the plane of the axle.
2; In combination with a carriage having a trail,-a pivoted frame having sockets in which the wheel, axleof-the carriage can slide in a parallelto the'longitudinal axis of the gun,- and-means connecting the trail to said pivoted' frame at a point below the wheel axle.
3. In combination with a, gun carriage having a'trail, and a platform, a forked; frame pivbtallymounted on said, platform 86 and having sockets in which the axle ofsaid. carriage can slide in a direction substan-- tially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the gun, and thrust sustaining rods between saidtrailand said'frame. i
4. In combination with a gun carriage and a platform, a'forke'd frame 'pivotally mounted on' said platform and having "sockets, bearings for the.
fitted in said sockets,
said axle and bearings being free to slide in a direction parallelto the longitudinal axis of the gun, and tension rods connecting said gun c'arria'geto'. saidframe at a point beneath the axle.-
5. In combination withagun carriage having a trail, a platform, a forked frame pivoted on said platform and havin sockets forming elon 'ated bearings in whicE the wheel'axleof sai guncarriage can slide,
said frame. ata point below said axle.
direction substantially axle of the carriage and"tension'=. rods' connecting said trail t010 6 I tudinal direction of-the gun.
7 The combination with agun catfiage, of a support for the carriage comprising a frame having'be a-ring's in which the-wheel axle of the czirriagemay slide with the carriage in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal arxisiof the gun, and means connecting the gun carriage to said support at a point beneath the plane of the axle.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
KARL VOLLER.
