` 1 `FOLDING `TYPE-WRI'IEE SUPPORT;`
To all 'whom t may concern Be itjknown that I, HARRY A. STONE,I a
citizen of the United States, residing at Aen New York, county of New York, and State 'of New: Yorlnhave invented certain new and useful Improvements "in Folding Typel/Vriter Supports, of which `the `following is ment/to any typewriter, particularly those known as' portable typewriters, which will be so constructed and combined with the typewriter' that it can be folded against the base of the typewriter when not wanted for use as a typewriter` support andivill then permit the typewriter to be placed uponany 1 otliersupport, table or deslf Another object ofthe invent-ion is the provision of a folding typewriter support of such novel construction and combined with the typewriter in such new" manner that it may be extended and used'as a typewriter support or table or folded and then used as `a base support for the typewriter, permitting the latter to be placed upon any ordlnary table, deskor support `for usual Operation.` j
Another Object of the invention is to provide, in combination with atypewriter, an
attached foldable support or tabletherefor, thereby providing afself-contained typewriter and table and obviating thene'cessity of employing any extraneous table, desk` or support for the typewriter when it is to be used. v j j The invention consists, `first, of an improved foldable typewriter support combined with a typewriter and self-contained therewith; second, the provision of an im-` proved foldable typewriter support combined with a typewriterand adapted to fold into such form and arrangement that it j `willconstitute asub-basefor thetypewriter j and permit the latter to be either supported `direct on an ordinary table or desk or to` be supported solely by the present improved support; third, in the improved foldableV typewriter support havingydevices which,
when the support is folded` to constitute a sub-base for the typewriter to which it is p Specification of Letters Patent. `epphjtaticn filed May 14,1913. seria1No.7e7,e92."

` connected, -constitute supporting `feet for the typewriter; .four-th,` in Ithe improved fold-able typewriter support and its manner of attachment or connection to a typewriter; liftlnin the complete foldable typewriter support and its combination with a typewriter to which it is attached, as fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings z--Flgure j 1 is a rear perspective view of the `invention, the typewriter being shown in dotted lines to better illustrate the manner of attachment of the ysupport thereto; FiggQ," a
bottom view of the typewriter frame and the foldable support, the latter being `folded and in position toconstitute a sub-base for the typewriter; `and Fig. `3, a detailview of one of the joints connecting a supporting log with the typewriter. j
The support `is preferably of tripodform, but `the legs 1 `whichmay be of any usual or preferred telescopic construction, have no head or top, asusual with tripods but,A
instead, they are directly connected to the frame 2 ofthe typewriter so as to constitute, in connection therewith, a self-contained typewriter and stand `or support. The telescopic legs 1 areadapted to collapse one within the otherfso that when".
collapsed they are no longer than the upper leg sections la, Fig.` 2. I
`To maintain the legs 1 in the spread position of Fig. 1, when the support is used, I provide folding braces 3 which are preferably composed of sections having the joint 4l, but fI `do not limit myself to thesep'articular braces, nor to employing articulated or jointed braces.` The braces 3 are pivoted or jointed at 5 to the respective legs, each leghaving a brace pivoted thereto and also being provided with a pin or other suitable connecting means 6 to engage the hooked or otherwise constructed free end 7 of a brace which is pivoted to another of the legs; The construction 6, 7, is for the purpose of providing a detachable joint and this may be varied as desired.` If preferred,.alatchcanf be employed at this point tol prevent accii I. leg sectlons 1a are proconstitute vcushion feet for the typewriter 2 when the typewriter support is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby obviatingthe necessity of providing the usual cushion feet on the typewriter itself. TWhen folded as shown in Fig'Q, however the feet 8 may be constructed, they will be arranged so that they will project downwardly from the type# writer frame and fojin suppor'" 1g feet for it when it is placed on a table o. desl. y
y The leg sections lu are conneced to the frame 2 by joints 9 to permit the legs l, after telescoping, to be folded against the bottom of the typewriter and to constitute a sub-base therefor'. l prefer to have these joints in the form of the usual ball and socket joint, either member of which may be attached to the frame ln the form shown 1n the drawings, the cup member 1s attached to frame 2 by any suitable fastenings l0 such as screws. j
The frame 2 carries fasteners ll to engage the legs when folded. These fasteners may be of any preferred form; those shown are double spring clips between the members of which the leg is snapped. rtny fastener or means which will hold the collapsed or folded legs and braces against lateral swing-l ing when used as asub-base, as shown in Fig. 2, may be employed.
The support may be attached to the typewriter when the latter is manufactured or may be subsequently applied and it may be made detachable, if desired.
In connection with the typewriter it constitutes a self-contained support which may be used as a table or stand for supporting the typewriter, as shown in Fig. l, or for folding to then constitute a sub-base for the typewriter, as shown in Fig. 2, permitting the latter to be placed upon any table or desk.v l
Assuming that the support is in the eX- tended condition shown in Fig. l, and it is desired' to fold it, the` legs l are telescoped into the leg sections la, the braces 3 having first been detached at 6, 7. j The braces are then folded to liev alongside of the leg sections la. rThe parts are then folded flat against the bottom of the typewriter frame 2 and secured by the catches or fasteners ll, shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the feet '8 are lowermost and constitute supporting feet for the typewriter, permitting the latter to be placed upon any desk or table.
ln reciting my invention'in this specilication and the appended claim as being coinbined with a typewriter, I do not thereby intend to restrict it to use only with a typewriter,y as may be combined with any other machine used for printing characters and, indeed, it may be combined with other devices which require a support during use or operation.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
T he combination with an object, of a foldable support attached thereto and portable therewith, composed of independent single legs which are independently jointed to the object and adapted to independently fold beneath said object te constitute a sublbase therefor, feet `carried by, and projecting from the sides of, said legs, fastening devices for securing the legs in folded condition undersaid object, and braces jointed to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the t Commissioner of Eatents.
