Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Giet. 6, 1914:a
Application filed October 20, 1913, .Se1'1`a1No. 73S,2:E0.
To all whom 'z'.f may con/fera s ile it known that l, (Tissues i. SMILEY, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of the city olt indianapolis, county ol Man ion, and State of lndiana. have invented certain new and useful Iinprorements in lilgglfartons, ot which the 'following is a spwilication.
My invention relates to cartons and more particnl-.u'ly to egg cartons which are collapsible.
The object o'lt this improvement is to provide a simple and eectire egg carton adapted to be 'folded substantially flat lor shipping and storage and one whirh is read-- ily unfolded to operative condition.
(Either objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combina,- tions and arrangenients of parts hereinafter descrihelfl and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accomplinyingA drawing), forming' a part of this specilieatioin and in \\'l|ieli4 Figure. l is a View in perspective ol. an egg carton erected in olieratire condition. Fig. 2 is a plan rice' of a` blank nsed in the construction, Fig. il, a similar View of another blank used in the con:-:lrHction. and
Fig. llis a View, in perspective` olf Athe car-V ton folded flat.
The preferred 'forni oi construction, as illustrated in the drawing cmnprises a piece ol hearpsr haben cardhoard or other suitable sllhstance clit ont, lient, notched and scored, 'forming the top 5. rear side 3, bottom l and liront side Fw ol. the carton. The liront side t is provided with proieetioiis El andis scored and folded on the lines il() and extendilnr substantially midway across the end ol' the. carton then bent and scored on lines ll and the rest of the projections disposed parallel with the liront side 8 midi way between the front and rear sides of the carton. 'ihe two ends ot' the projections il are orerlapplal near theI central portion of the carton. The projections $3 are also pro vided with notches 12 the purpose of which will he descriliied later.
The rear side G is 'provided with projcctions 1&5 folded and scored on the lines ll. ylhe projections 15S extend across the ends olx the carton until they reach the projet-,thais Il where they are bent and scored on lines l5. lines 15 the projections 'i3 are provided iii'- nith slots 16 which engage corresponding 1,7 are then scored and l'ohled on lines 20 with the extreme end portions of the projections 1T extending between the under edges of the ends of the carton and bottom T to lock the carton in operative condition. A. plurality o partitions 21 are scored and folded on lines 22 end the end portions outside of lines 92 are bent at snbstantiallyright angles and seenrell to the front side 8 and rear side (i, snhstantiallj/Y as indicated in Fig. l by means of glue or other suitable adhesite. At the oentral portion of cach of the partitions is a slot 23 adapted to engage a corrcsporalng slot l2 in projections EL Thevv [')ai'titil'ins 2l with projections 9 torni the inner partitions dividing the carton into separate egg coin'partnients.
A carton made as indicated is easily folded by bending the. partitions Q1 and the ends ol the carton on lines internlediate their ends therehr bringingl the sides 6 and r4 against the il'olded partitions and ends. lliis movement also 'folds bottoni 7 longitudinally. l'iid 5 is then folded over bottom 7 and sides (i with projections 17 'folded over the lid as indicated in Fig'. l, rendering the carton in ver); coniliact condition for storage or shipment. rThe carton is erected to oper atire eondition, as indicated in Fig". 'l byI nn)"oldirng,r lid '5 and projection 17', then straiejhtening,r partitions 17 and the ends of the carton.
lVhilel have illustrated and described the preferred form of Construction for carrying' my invention into etleet, this is capable ol" variation and modification without departing 'troni the spirit of the invention. therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of eonstruction .set forth, hat desire to avail myself of such ifariations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is:
1. An egg carton comprising a flexible sheet cut ont and farming the lid, bottom, tront and rear sides of a carton; projections on said front and rear sides forming ends lFormed on .the ends and certain egg compartment partitioi'is; projections on thel ends of said lid extending across said ends and between said bot toni and lower edges of said ends; and partitions each formed of a separate sheet and extending laterally of thecarton and having its ends secured to the iront and rear sides of the carton, substantially as described. l
2. An egg carton comprising a flexible sheet cut out and forming the lid, bottoni, front and rear sides of the carton; projections on the ends of said front side, each projection having e portion forming a half of one end of the carton and a portion eX tending parallel with said front side mid- WayV between said front and rear sides, the ends of said projections overlapping; projections on the ends of said rear sides, each of said last mentioned projections forming;
1,1 isses the other half of one end or tne carton and having its end portion engaging onev of sind rlirst mentioned, projections; latesai par-- titions each formed of separate sheet and extending across said iii'st mentioned projections having its ends secured to said front and rear sides, the intersecting points of said projections and partitions bein` provided with slits and inteiloclied; and extensions on the ends of said lid extending c er said .ends and disposed between the Lower edges of said ends and said bottom, substantially as described.
In testimony .whereof hare signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
