To all whom it may Concern Be it known that I, THEoDoRn SwANsoN, residing at Lynn Center, in the county of Henry and State of illinois, have invented a new and Improved `Work-Bench, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention, which relates to work benches, is more especially designed to serve as acarpenters bench, and it comprehends generally a bench of the general type stated having an improved means whereby lumbe-r may be conveniently held for being planed 0H evenly and square, with perfect accuracy; and ease and without the necessity of testing', the work with squares, gages or other lilej implements. Primarily, my invention has for its Object to provide an improved work bench of the kind stated of a simple, compact and ec0` nomical construction, in which the parts are coperatively so combined and arranged that they can be so formed to the desired sizes and shapes that they can be readily assembled for use, and which are so joined that the bench may be worked from either the right or left hand side. l
My invention also seeks to provide, in af bench of the character stated, a simple and easily adjusted and manipulated guiding means for the planer, whereby in use itwill plane a perfectly straight edge to square perfectly with the fiat side of the board be ing planed and in which the parts are so" connected and operatively combined that the` entire bench may bey easily moved about without the necessity of taking out a part..
Again, my invention has for its purposey to provide a work bench of the character mentioned whose parts are so formed and adapted for being operatively so connected that the said part-s may be, when desired,` readily taken apart in sections or in separate pieces.
With other objects in viewthat will hereinafter appear, my invention consists ofi certain improvements in work benches that embody the ,peculiar construction and novelA combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the hinged top or flat planing board being shown in the operative position, a part thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my improved worlr bench the hinged top board being atl its swung down position. Fig is a cross section thereof taken on the line 3 3 on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is' a cross sectiontaken on the line 4 4 on Fig. 2..
In carrying out invention, I form the framing of the benchinthe manner' best shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, by reference to which it will be seen that the oppositely disposed horizontal timbers 1 1, whichlform the guideway for the planing implement hereinafter referred to, are bolted to the inner sides of the upper ends of a series `of sets of oppositely disposed uprights or posts 2 2, three of such sets ofposts being shown, one set at each end of the bench `and one set centrally thereof. y The lower ends of the uprights 2 2 are fastened to the inner edges of a pair of longitudinally extended base timbers o-r `boards 3 3 in turn mounted upon and'sec'ured to the bottom cross members 4.-4. For'holding the opposite end sets of the uprights 2 2 rigidly, they are braced by the metal cross bars 6 and 7 that join with the posts 2 and the timbers 3 and4, as shown. vThe upper edges of the guide timber 1 1, in practice, extend, above the posts, theA upper edges being in a plane slightly below the upper edges of a pair of longitudinal boards 80 8Oy secured upon the outside of the posts or uprights 2 2 and which extend the full length of the bench.
8 8 designate hanger bars pendent from one of the guide timbers 1 to which they are bolted and'9 is a bottom bar bolted to the lower ends of the hangers 8, and which eX- tends the full length of the bench.
` 10 designates a longitudinally extended bar, located between the opposite sets of uprights or posts 2, and which form a supporting member for the board whose edges are to be planed and the said bar is adjustably supported for vertical movement with respect to the planer guides 1 in the manner best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, from which it will be noticed the bar 10 at each end, has a laterally projected bracket 11 formed with a vertical threaded aperture 12 for receiving the vertically positioned adjusting screw shafts 13 Whose lower ends have stepped bearings in brackets 14 that are secured to und projected laterally from the bottom har 9.
By reason of arranging the several parts, so far as described, it is apparent that the board Whose edges are to be planed isedge Wise siuqportcd upon the bar 10, and since the said bar is vertically adjustable, the up-j per edge ci' the board to be planed can be readily brought into the desired positionl relatively 'to the guide members 1 1.
The upper vends of the screw shafts are journaled in brackets 15 4that project inwardly from one of the side boards 80, vit being iuiderstood that the :screw rods are so mounted that lby `turning them, in opposite directions, kthe board 'supportii'ig bar 10 can be raised or lowered, as desired.
The rods 153 may be provided with vturning handles "16, at the loiver fend, as shown in but f'tor moreconveniently actuat-- ing them they are preferably provided with bevel pinions 17 for engaging with like pinions 1 on the crank shafts 19-'19.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, the complete arrangement, the manner in which my improved bench is used and the advantages 'thereof will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which itrelates.
l/Vhen the top lboard is swung dovvn my bench can be used 'as an ordinary Work benehand since the ope 1ative parts that are used when edging a board are covered, there is little or no 'danger of the said parts becoming impaired by using the bench for ordinary purposes.
