VALVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. PFEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to valves of that type which are commonly known as globe valves although the present improvements may also be embodied in other types of valves.
As is well known repairing of globe or disk valves as now ordinarily constructed cannot be effected without shutting down the line of piping in which this valve is installed by means of a separate valve or shut ting down the apparatus with which the main valve is associated. This is objectionable in cases where interruption of the apparatus for a considerable length of time is not permissible.
One of the objects of this invention is to' provide a valve which is self-contained and which is provided in addition to the mainv valve dev1ce-w1th an auxlliary or supple-- mental valve device whereby the pressure can be quickly and easily cut off from the main valve device so as to permit of redressing or grinding elther the seat or replacing the valve disk for a new one.
Another object or blowing out any sediment which may be collected in the supplemental valve device or to drain the piping on the pressure side of the valve.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved means for detachably connecting the disk of the mainvalve device with its shifting mechanism.

The main port is controlled by a stopper or valve device which is arranged in the casing on the outlet side of the diaphragm. Then this main valve device becomes worn and leaky and requires repairing the pressure of the liquid, gas or other medium is cut off from the pressure side of the main port by a supplemental or auxiliary valve device which is preferably constructed as follows: 8 represents a circular supplemental valve seat formed in the valve casing between the main port and the inlet nipple and preferably immediately below the main port. This supplemental valve seat is preferably of conical form and has its axis arranged transversely in the lower part of the valve casing. 9 represents an auxiliary valve stopper having preferably the form of a conical plug. which engages its periphery with the conical valve seat Sand projects at its opposite ends beyond opposite sides of the valve casing. This valve plug may be held in its seat-by means of a screw nut 10 arranged on a threaded shank 11 formed on the small end of the plug and bearing against a washer 12 bearing against the adjacent outer side of the casing, and the plug may be turned by providinc its large end with a flat sided lug 13 adapted to receive a wrench or other suitable tool. This valve plug is provided with a cavity 14 of circular form which is closed at its opposite ends but opens at two difierent points circumferentially of the plug, preferably at two adjacent quarters thereof, with two ports 15, 16. Upon turning the valve plug so that its ports register respec tively with the inlet nipple and the main port the medium which is being controlled by the valve is permitted to pass from the inlet nipple through the auxiliary valve plug and out through the main port if the main port is uncovered. This position of the auxiliary valve plug is indicated in Fig. 1. When it is desired to either inspect themain valve device or repair the same in case it has become worn and leaky, the auXiliary valve plug is turned so as to present a solid portion of its periphery to the inlet nipple and main port as shown in Fig. 3, thereby cutting oil the pressure on the inlet side of the diaphragm and permitting the main valve device to be repaired. Such repairs can be made by this means without shutting down the line in which the valve is installed an undue length of time.
In order to permit of blowing out any sediment which may accumulate in the cavity of the valve plug and also to permit of draining the liquid from the inlet nipple ot' the valve and the piping connected therewith when this becomes desirable an anxiliary or blow-oft port 17 is provided on the imderside of the casing preferably in line with the main port. By turning the auxiliary valve plug so that one of its ports opens into the inlet nipple while the other port registers with the blow-oil port and the solid part of the periphery of this plug closes the main port, as shown in Fig. 4:, the pressure of the liquid or other medium on the inlet side of the diaphragm will be cut oil from the main alve device but this liquid in the pressure line will be permitted to pass through the auxiliary valve plug and out tl'irough the blow-oft port. By this means any sediment in the valve plug will be removed and prevented from reaching the main valve device and the parts in communication with the delivery side of the valve, and it also permits the pressure or supply pipe connected with the inlet side of the valve to be drained when this becomes desirable.
The main valve device may be variously constructed but that shown in the drawings is preferred and suitable and is constructed as follows: 18 represents a main annular valve seat formed around the upper side of the diaphragm around the main port. 19 represents the valve disk which is movable toward and from the main valve seat for opening and closing the main port. The movement of the valve disk toward and from its seat is effected by means of a valve stem 20 arranged in line with the main port and having an external screw thread 21 on its central part which engages with an internal screw thread on a bonnet 22. The latter is connected by a screw joint with the bonnet collar of the casing so as to close the opening; 7 on the respective side of the casing. The valve disk is connected with the inner end of the valve stem in such manner that it is compelled to move axially with this stem for opening and closing the main port upon turning the stem and eausing the same to move lengthwise by reason of the screw connection between the same and thebonnet. The turning of the valve may be effected by the usual handle or wheel applied to the outer end of the same and a tight joint may be produced between the valve stem and the bonnet by means of a stuffing box 2% of usual and well known con struction.
In order to permit of re-surtacing or dressing the main valve seat in case the same becomes worn and leaky the bonnet unscrewed from the valve casing; as to uncover the side opening 7 therein and permit the withdrawal of the valve disk and the parts which connect the same with the inner end of the valve stem. Preparatory to thus removing the main valve device from the casing the auxiliary valve plug is turned either into the position shown in Fig. 3 or into thaposition shown in Fig. l, so as to cut oi? the pressure from the outlet side of the diaphragm. When the main valve disk and associated parts are thus removed the main valve seat may dressed or re-seated by a tool of suitable construction introduced through the side opening 7 in the usual manner.
For the purpose of enabling the valve disk to be readily renewed when the same becomes worn unduly and. causes leakageimproved means are provided which embody my invention and which are constructed as follows: 25 represents a carrying head provided with an axial opening composed of a lower part 26 and a contracted upper part 27 forming a downwardly facing shoulder 28 within this carrying head. Extending" laterally or radially from the axial opening' of the carrying head to the periphery thereof a slot having); a wide lower part 29 which is in line with the enlarged lower part of the axial opening and a narrow upper part Z-l0 v.-'hich is in line with the reduced upper part of said axial opening. At its lowerend. the valve stem is provided with an enlargement or collar 81 which has a diameter smaller than the width of the lower wide part of the slot and the enlarged lower part oi? the axial opening in the carrying head but smaller than the width of the upper narrow part of this slot and the reduced upper part of this opening. The valve stem immediately above this collar or enlargement is smaller in diameter than the width of the upper part of the slot and the reduced part of said axial opening. By means of this construction the coupling head may be applied to or removed from the valve stem by moving the lower part of the valve stem and the enlargement thereon laterally inward or outward through the upper and lower parts of said slot and the upper and lower parts of said axial opening. In the assembled position of the carrying head the downwardly or inwardly facing shoulder thereof faces the upwardly or outwardly facing shoulder formed by the enlargement on the valve stem. The valve disk engages its upper side with the underside of the carrying head and is detachably connected therewith by a coupling cap comprising an internally screw threaded sleeve or ring 32 which surrounds or incloses the periphery of the disk and is provided at its upper end with an internal screw thread which engages with an external screw thread on the lower part of the carrying head while its lower end is provided with an inwardly projecting annular flange 33 which engages with a rabbet 3a formed on the underside of the valve disk adjacent to the periphery thereof. When the parts are thus assembled the enlargement at the lower end of the spindle is confined between the upper side of the valve disk and the internal shoulder of the carrying head so that the valve disk is compelled to move axially toward and from the main valve seat upon screwing the valve stem inwardly or outwardly. Detachment of the valve disk from the valve spindle is also prevented by reason of the upper part of the coupling sleeve closing the outer end of the enlarged part of the lateral slot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, whereby the enlargement at the lower end of the valve spindle is prevented from passing outwardly through the lateral slot and the parts are held in their assembled position. This form of the axial opening and slot of the carrying head thus forms a laterally opening passage in the head which enlarges downwardly and which confines the enlargement of the valve spindle in the carrying head.
My improved valve is particularly useful in cases where the main valve requires frequent re-seating or redisking and as the main and auxiliary valve devices are embodied in the same casing the cost of manufacture is but little more than a single valve of this character of ordinary construction while possessing the advantages and the capacity of two of such valves arranged in the same line of pipin I claim as my invention:
1. A valve comprising a casing having an inlet, an outlet, a diaphragm arranged between said inlet and outlet and having a main port, and a blow off port communieating with said casing on the inlet side of the diaphragm vertically in line with said main port, a main valve device for controlling said main port arranged on the out let side or" the diaphragm, and a supplemental valve device arranged on the inlet side of the diaphragm vertically in line with said main valve device and adapted to close the main port and connect said inlet with said blow-01f port or to close said blow-ofi' port and connect said inlet with said main port.
2. A valve comprising a casing having an inlet, an outlet, a diaphragm arranged between said inlet and outlet and having a main port, and a blow 0E port communicating with said casing on the inlet side of the diaphragm vertically in line with said main port, a main valve device for controlling said main port arranged on the outlet side of the diaphragm, and a supplemental valve device arranged on the inlet side of the diaphragm vertically in line with said main valve device and adapted to close the main port and connect said inlet with said blow-off port or to close said blow-ofif port and connect said inlet with said main port or to simultaneously close said main port and blow-011 port.
