To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER TRoNRUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie Farm, in the county of Barron,
State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in vehicle appliances and has particular reference to whip locks.
The object of this invention resides in the provision of readily operated means for looking a whip in its socket.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a means for locking the whip in its socket, which means when in inoperative position may serve as a rein holder.
A still further object is to improve the efliciency and simplify the structure of devices of this character.
With these. and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangements of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and. in which:
Figure 1. is a front elevational view of a whip socket attached to a dash board and with the improved locking means associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the device, showing the lo'cking means in inoperative position to serve as a rein holder. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking means. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is shown the preferred form of the invention, 5 designates a whip socket which is secured to the side edge of a dash board 6 by means of screws passed through the socket, a plate 7 disposed between the socket and the dash board, said plate being provided with loop portions 8 engaging over the edge of the dash board. Positioned on the upper end of the whip socket is a rubber plate 9 which is provided with a central aperture 10 for receiving the whip 11 and which is preferably formed on its periphery with an ornamental annular band 12.
Extending from a plate 13 provided on the socket adjacent its upper end is a staple 14 and pivotally secured to a plate 15 provided on the lower end of the socket is a latch 16 apertured at its upper end to receive the staple. The intermediate portion of this latch is provided with an inwardly extending arm 17 which passes through an opening 18 in the adjacent wall portion of the socket and carries at its inner end an arcuate corrugated whip engaging clamping plate 19. It will be seen that by the above.
structure means are provided for clamping the whip in the socket, as when the latch is engaged with the staple 14 the clamping plate 19 bears against the whip, pressing the same against the socket and against the edge of the opening 10 in the rubber plate. A small padlock of conventional design, as shown at 20 is provided for locking the latch on the staple.
It is observed that when the latch memberis swungto inoperative position to release the whip the clamping plate 19 engages against the wall of the whip socket. Means are provided for normally resiliently holding the latch in inoperative position which comprises a leaf spring 21 having one end secured to a plate 22 on the whip socket and having its other end engaging the inner side of the latch. It will be ob- 1 served that when the latch is in inoperative position it is spaced from the whip socket. The free upper end of the latch in this position provides an efiicient rein holder. The reins may be passed between the latch and the socket when it is desired to lock the position.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple device has been provided which will efliciently perform all of the functions set forth. It will be observed that various minor changes and modifications may be made without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
