To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAMEs W. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Door-Holder and VVindow-Lock, of which the following is a specification. v

The invention resides'in the combination and arrangement of parts and in thedetails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the device applied to the sashes of a window; and Fig. 3 is a perspective showing-the device applied as a door-holding means.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a fixed member 1, including rectangularly disposed flanges 2 and 3, the flange 2- being provided with spaced openings 4, adapted to receive securing elements, whereby the fixed member 1 is held in placerigidly upon a supporting structure.
The invention further includes another fixed member 5, comprising angularly disposed flanges 6 and 7, the member 5 being of considerable length, while the member 1 is relatively short. In the flange 7 of the member 5, there is an elongated slot 8, one wall of which is defined by the flange 6. Located in the flange 7 and positioned between the slot 8 and the outer edge 9 of the flange, are a series of openings 10, disposed substantially parallel with the slot 8. i

to form an eye 12 adapted to be engaged in an opening inthe outstanding flange 3 of the fixed member 1. At its other end, the locking member is bent to form a rectangularly disposed finger 14, adapted to engage successively in the openings 10 of the flange 7 of thefixed member 0. Intermediate its ends, the rod which forms the lockingmemher, is bent upon itself to fashion a closely coiled helical spring 15, responsive to traction only. i
The device as above described, may be used ina variety of ways. For instance, as shown in F ig. 2, the fixed member 1 may bexsecured to the upper'cross rail 16 of a lower Window sash, the fixed member 5 being secured in upright relation to one of the stiles 17 of the upper sash of the window. In such instance, the finger 14; of the locking member maybe engaged successively in the openings 10, permitting the upper sash to be disposed in open'position, or if the upper sash is held fixed, the lower sash may be maintained in open positions of. different extents, depending upon which of the openings 10 is engaged by the finger 14 of the locking member.
If desired, as shown in Fig. 3, the fixed member 1 may be secured to the jamb 18 of a doorway, the fixed member 5 being attached to the door 19, transversely of the same. When the device is positioned as shown in Fig. 3, the finger 1 1 may be engagedsuccessively in the openings 10, thus permitting the door 19 to be positioned at different angles. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that since the spring 15 is closely coiled, the
upper sash cannot be pushed downwardly, nor can the lower sash be pushed vupwardly. However, since the spring 15 is responsive to tensile strain, the open sash may be slid into closed position, without disengaging the finger .14 from the fixed member 5. v
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the spring 15 will elongate, to permit the door 19 to be swung into closed position,
without permitting the door to be swung into a more widely opened position.
When it is desired to raise or lower the sashes to a limited extent, without putting the spring 15 under tension, the finger 14 may be placed in the slot 8, for reciprocation therein, the locking member being thus held against assuming a conspicuous, depending position upon the lower sash. Likewise, re-

It is to be noted, referringto Figs. 2 and 3, that when the finger. 14* reciprocates in the slot 8, the finger will slide incontact' with the flange 6, owing to the fact that the flange 6 defines one wall in the slot 8'; By
this construction, the stile 17 of the window 'sash, in the one instance, andthe d'oor 1:9in' the other instance, will not be'marred by the reciprocation of the finger,the flange 6 con stituting a guard for the structure upon which the 'fi'xedin'ember 5 is mounted.-
