SUSPENDING nEvIcE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 29, 1914- Application filed November 17, 1913. Serial No. 801,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLIN EDGAR STEW- ART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ceredo, in the county of Wayne and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspending Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.-
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in suspending devices and has for its primary object to pr0- vide a device of extremely simple construe tion and which may be employed for susending hammocks and the like and which will be strong and durable as well as highly eflicient in use.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will include an oil cup, whereby the operative parts may be oiled continually, thereby assuring proper operation of the device and making it impossible for the parts to rust.
A further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and increase the etiiciency thereof without materially increasing the cost of the same.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, partly in elevation of my device in use; and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the screw-eye, the threaded end of which may be readily secured in a ceiling or the like, as shown at 2, while the lower end 3 is mounted upon the bolt 4 within the oil cup 5. It "w ill be understood that the bolt 4 is positioned transversely through the oil cup 5 which is preferably in the form of a hell or the like and has its lower end 6 formed into opposite directed upwardly curved hooks 7 The bolt 4 is secured in positionby a nut 8 and is prevented from turning by the lug in one side of the cup 5 and projecting into the opening in which the head of the bolt 4 is engaged, said head having a notch 10 to receive the lug 9.
It will, be understood that the upper end of the cup is flared and that a suitable quantity of oil or the like is placed in said cup, as shown at 11. I also prefer to have the opposite sides of the cup flattened, as
clearly shown in Fig. 2. This, however, is
not absolutely essential and the cup may be of any desired form. It will further be understood that many minor changes in the details of construction and arrangements of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.
1t will be particularly noted that I have provided a very simple suspending device or hanger which is especially adapted for porch swings and which will preclude all liability of noise and facilitate the easy or 'smooth operationof the swing, the parts being capa ble ofbeing easily manufactured and readily assembled and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim is 1. Adevice of the class described comprising a suspending member having a perforated lower end, a transversely extending bearing member rotatably mounted intermediate of its ends in the perforated end of the suspending member, a cup carried by said bearing member upon its opposite ends, and a hook formed on the cup.
2. A device of the class described comprising a vertically disposed suspending member, a transversely extending bearing member rotatably supported in the lower end of said suspending member, an oil cup supported upon the opposite ends of said bearing member, means formed on said cup for engagement with said bearing member to prevent relative rotation of said bearing member and the cup, and a hook formed on said cup.
8. A device of the class described comprising a lubricating cup having alined openings in its opposite sides, a bearing member positioned in said alined openings, said bearing member having a notch formed in one end, a lug carried by said lubricating cup and engaged in said notch to prevent rotation of said bearing member, hooks carried by said lubricating cup, and a suspending member mounted upon said bearing member.
4. A device of the class described comprising a suspending member having a perforated lower end, a bearing member extending transversely through the perforated lower end of the threaded member, an oil ing a cup having alined openings in its 01)- cup supported upon the opposite ends of said posite sides, a bolt extending transversely earing member, means for preventing turnthrough said cup and having the head thereing of said bearing member relatively to of disposed in one of said openings, the op- 5 said cup, and hooks formed on the lower end posite end of said bolt projecting through of said cup. a the other of said openings, the head of said "'5i A-de'vice of the class described comprisbolt'having a notch formed therein, a lug ing a lubricating cup, having alined openformed on the Wall of said cup and projectings in its opposite sides, a bearing member ing into one of the openings therein to en- 10 extending transversely through said cup and gage the notch in the head of said bolt, having its opposite ends disposed in the means mounted on the projecting portion of alined openings in said cup, one end of said said bolt to maintain the same in position bearing member having a notch formed with relation to the said cup, a hook carried therein, a lug formed on one side of said cup by said cup, and a suspending member 15 and projecting into one of said openings loosely mounted at one end upon said bolt.
therein to engage the notch in said bearing In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my member, a hook carried by said cup, and a signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
suspending member loosely mounted upon HARLIN EDGAR STEWART. said bearing ine nber Within the Walls of said Witnesses: 20 cup. Jos. H ons,
'6. A device of the class described compris- G. W. DAWSON.
