Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed Kay 18, 1914, Serial No. 839,361.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, Omva'n A. MoCoMBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Anti-Rail-Creeper Tie-Plates.
My invention is a device to prevent railway rails in the track from wearing into the railway cross ties; also to prevent railway rails in the track from creeping longitudinally or moving laterally; also to prevent a rail from canting outwardly. These objects are attained by the device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a view ofthe upper side of the one piece anti rail creeper tie plate; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center line longitudinally of the one piece anti rail creeper tie plate; Fig. 3 is a View of the underside of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout. the several views.
An anti rail creeper tie plate consisting of a plate A A A A, with a rail seat B B B B, on the upper side, to be placed under the base of a railway rail and on top of a railway tie to prevent the rail from wearing into the cross tie and for other purposes herein after mentioned.
On the upper side of the plate two parallel lug hooks D D are provided, one on each side of the rail seat to hook over and engage the fianges of the rail on each side of the base when the plate and the rail are in position for service and hold the rails from creeping longitudinally or moving laterally.
One end a c of the plate is longer than the other end from the rail seat B B B B. The long end is to be placed outside of the railway track, to give the plate greater stability outside of the track, and to prevent the rail from canting outwardly; also to give a leverage for the fasteners through the openings in the long end of the plate to hold it in a gripping manner, so as to give the lug hooks a firm hold on the rail.
The openings'F F F, in the long end of the plate only are for fasteners through the plate into the tie to secure the plate to the cross tie at the long end only. The short disconnected ribs G G G G on the. under side of the long end of the plate are to engage the tie and retard the long end of the plate from slipping on the tie except in a gripping manner to hold the base of the rail wit the lug hooks D D.
The under side of the rail seat I, and
the under side of'the short. end J of plate are smooth so that this part of the plate may rotate more freely in a gripping manner until lug hooks- D D grip the flanges of the rail and come to osition for service.
The notch K in the short. end of the plate'is to permit of a spike being put in the cross tie and on. the rail flange so that the spike will not interfere with the anti rail creeper, t1e plate in the direction, that the plate rotates to; grip the rail.
To apply theanti rail creeper tie plate it is placed under the rail and on top of the tie, and then rotated until lug hooks D D D 'D gripthe flanges of the rail on both sides of the base of the rail and then the plate is fastened to the tie through openings F F F, in the long end of the plate only. The fasteners, in the long end of the plate and the tie, acting in concurrence with the thrust of the rail, automatically tighten the grip of the lug hooks on the flanges of the rail.
- I claim:
1. A one piece anti rail creeper tie plate adapted to be placed between a railway rail and tie having on the upper side two opposing, opposite, parallel rail gripping lug hooks, that project upwardly and inwardly over the rail flanges, said hooksbeing shorter than the width of said plate, and located across the center thereof on each side of said rail, one end of said plate extending farther from said rail on one side than on the other, all fastener openings being in the long end of said plate, and said plate to be fastened to said tie by the lon end only,
substantially as described and or the purpose set forth.
2. A one piece anti rail creeper tie plate adapted to be placed between a railway rail and tie, having on the upper side two opposing, opposite, parallel, rail gripping lug hooks that project upwardly and inwardly over the rail flanges, said hooks being shorter than the width of said plate and located across the center of said plate on each side of said rail,.one end of said plate extending farther from said rail on one side than on the other, all fastener openings being in the long end of said plate and said plate being fastened to said tie by the long end only, the under side of the long end of said plate having a plurality of short disconnected ribs, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. A one piece anti rail creeper tie plate adapted to be placed between a railway rail and tie, having on the upper side two opposing, opposite, parallel, rail gripping lug hooks that project upwardly and inwardly over the rail flanges, said hooks being shorter than the width of said plate and located across the center thereof on each side of said rail, one end of said plate extending farther from said rail on one side than on the other, all fastener openings be ing in the long end of said late and said plate to be fastened to saidtie by the long end only, the under side of the long end of i said plate having a plurality of short dis connected ribs, and the under side of the said plate beneath the rail seat and the short end being smooth, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. A one piece-anti rail creeper tie plate adapted to be placed between arailway rail and tie having on the upper side two oppos ing, opposite, parallel, rail gri lug hooks that project'upwardly an inwardly over the rail flanges, said hooks being shorter than the width of said plate an located across the center thereof on each side of said rail, one end of said plate extending farther'from said rail on one slde than on the other, all fastener openings being in the long end of sa 1d plate and said plate to be fastened to sand tie the long end only, the under side of said long end of said plate having a plurahty of short disconnected ribs, the under slde of sald plate beneath the rail seat and'the said short end being sinooth, and said plate having a notch set forth.
