SAFETY-STIRRUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent d Sept. 29, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,.-ERNs'r,J. Born, ALoNzo Born, andTnnononn MLSLIFE, citizensofthe'United States, residing atAra-, pahoe, in the county of Furnas, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in A Safety-Stirrups; and we do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such asflwill enable others skilled a in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to improvements in stirrups and particularly to safety stirrups' One-object of the invention "is to provide a simpledevice of this character which is simple in construction and is efleqtive as well as quick in action to releasethe foot of the rider should he be thrown from the horse.
Another object is to provide such a structure that the same will bepositive in its action and be relieved of danger of the parts catching.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. 7
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the stirrup in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same in inoperativeposition. ,Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device in the position of Fig. 1. i Fig. 1 is a vertical section on the'line t at of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the ,accompanying drawings, 10 represents the L-shaped plate which forms the main part of the stirrup, and secured to the upper end of the vertical portion is an outwardly extending pin or bolt '11. This bolt is adapted to passthrough the loop 12 of the stirrup strap and has a guard loop 13 to hold the-strap against sliding off. The bolt or shaft 11 has a reduced squared end 14 which passes through the square opening 15 in the upper end of the plate 16 which forms the other side of the stirrup. Theouter end of the horizontal.
portion of the member 10 is bifurcated and has the ends of the bifurcations rolled to form the eyes 17. The lower end of the plate 16 has a reduced portion 18 which extends horizontally within the bifurcation, and secured to the plate 16 at apoint where the member 18 enters the bifurcation is a bearing eye 19. This bearing eye is arthe foot to readily slideout between the receives therethrough a pivot pin 20. En-
circling this pin between the eyes 17 and 19,
and on each side of the eye 19 are the coils 21 of a spring which has one portion bent upwardly as at 22 and engages with the lower portion of the plate 16. The ends of the spring at the other side of the pivot engage with the under face of the horizontal portion of the member 10 on each side of the bifurcations therefor. A member 23 is dis posed transversely under the bifurcation and has its ends secured to the ends of the spring, the terminals of these ends of the spring being bent laterally as indicated at 21. This member 23 holds the ends of the spring from slipping into the bifurcation and preventing the free operation of the device.
The free end of the member 18 is turned up slightly and rests on the inner end wall of the bifurcation, and forms, together with the legs of the bifurcation, the tread plate of the stirrup. The foot of the rider rests on this tread plate, and should he be thrown from the horse, the foot would pull the member 16 outwardly on its pivot, andperrnit p per endof the plate 16and the adjacent end of the shaftll. i
What is claimed is: v
A safety stirrup comprising an L-shaped member having a horizontal portion bifurcated a second L-shaped member having a horizontal portion reduced and movable within the bifurcation, said second L-shaped member being pivotally connected to the outer end of the bifurcated portion ofthe first member, a springmounted on the pivot of the members, one end of the spring bearmg on the second member, the spring at the opposite side of thepivot having the ends engaging under the portions of the bifurcations, and a transverse member secured to the said spring ends for holding said spring endsfrom engaging in the bifurcation.
In testimony whereof, we afix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
