v To all whom) it may concern:
. MACHINE Be it known thatI,AR'r1 IUn. l/V. NELsoN,
" a citizen' of the'United States'of America,
residing at 'l/Villiamsport, inthe county, of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have {1 invented certain new and useful Improve l ments in Wood-Planing Machines, of which thel following is a specification, reference being*-ha1 therein to the accompanying drawings. a
My invention relates to a planingmachine andmore particularly to that type of plan= ,ing machine known as'outside molder.
- In constructions'iof outside molders now in general use, it is quitecustomary to place ,1- the upper cutte'r head and: the upper feed "rolls ontop of the main frame with. the
shafts or arbors that carrythe cutter head and the feed rolls extending across theframe from sideito side, the cutter ihead' and'the rolls on the end of the shafts overhanging thebed or-table. The lower feed rolls and the lower cutter head and side heads are mounted upon the table. With this-type of machine considerable difficulty hashereinbefore been encountered. improperly driving the rolls and the cutter heads, without employing a complicated arrangement. ofbelting. It is the object'of my invention to; so
arrange theparts that a simple arrange ment of belting maybe employed.
To this end the invention 2 resides in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed! i In the drawings,'Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my inventlon; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 1s a section on the line wzv of Fig. 1. 40 ,any suitable construction; B a vertical out- A designatesthe frame of the machine, of
ter head, and C an upper horizontally-arranged cutter head.
D E are the upper feed rolls and F G the lower. The cutter head(] is secured to I extends completely across the frame and has fixed to an extension N thereof which provrrANY, or WIL ansronT,

jeots beyond one side of the frame, large gear 0 that is driven from a pinion Pupon a stub-shaft Q. The vpinionis rotatively fixed to a pulley Q/upon the shaft Q, and
this pulley is'd'riven'lbymeans. of a belt from a pulley- S on a shaft T and the latter is rotated from the main drive shaftU by means of pulleys -V Wand belt 1X The main-drive shaft. has apulley Y: secured thereto which directly driveslthe shaft J by a quarter-twistbelt Z that \connects'the pul-' ley Yland a pulley A on thevertical shaft J. Bis a belt forming the drive connection between a pulley C on the shaft U and a pulley D onthe shaft H, theilastqnentioned pulleys being arranged as shown, within the sides of the frame. In order to have the shaft U best positioned for-driving the various cutter heads and the other parts, it is desirable to arrange this shaft in'rela'tion to the various drivenlmembers, asshown in the drawings, but when -sopositioned the :plane of the upper portion'ofthebelt B would intersect the shaft E. Therefore the shaft E of therfeedxroll E is not extended-completely across the frame but is journaled in a bearing F carried 'by a member G that has the portion Hf'that-extends across the 1 beltarranged above the plane of the belt, so
as not to interfere, as will be readily seen upon reference to Fig. 8. The shafts E and M are connected to rotate at the same speed preferably by a chain I and sprockets K L respectively fixed to said shafts.
By the arrangement of parts hereinbefore described the cutter C is actuated by a straight belt drive, and the cutter B by a quarter-turn belt drive, and both of these driving connections are directly from they main drive shaft U. Furthermore, the belt B is arranged within the sides of the frame and therefore, does not increase the Width of the machine. Also the driving connection 1. In a planing machine, the combination of a frame, a bed arranged at one side of the frame, a cutterv head and a feed roll extending across the bed, a shaft for the cutter head journaled in bearings in the sides of the frame, a drive shaft, driving members re sp'ectiv'ely on the cutter head and the drive rnNNsYL-vANIn,- A GOEZEORATION or v shafts, each positioned intermediate the sides said shaft to one side of said flexible connec o-fthe frame, a flexible connection between said driving members, a shaft for the feed roll arranged intermediate the shaft for the cutter head and the'drive shaft and extending transversely of the bed, a journal for tion and between the sides of the frame, and
a member carrying said journal, mounted upon the frame-sides and having a portion arranged above the plane of the flexible connection. r v 2. In a planing'machine, the combination of a, frame, of a horizontally-arranged bed positioned at one side of the frame, a cutter head and feed rolls extending across said 1 bed, horizontal shafts for the cutter head mounted upon the frame, pulleys upon said Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, 1L0.
and one of the feed rolls journaled in bearings in the sides of the frame and arranged in substantially the same plane, a horizontal drive vshaft extending transversely of and driving shaft :and the cutter head shaft, ar-
ranged between the sides of the frame, a belt connecting said pulleys, a shaft extending transversely of the bed for another of said Ifeed rolls, a bearing in which saidlast-mentioned shaft is journaled, arranged in close proximity to thebelt and in substantially the same plane, a member carrying said bearing having the portion near said belt arranged in a'plane above saidbelt, means for driving the first-mentioned feed roll shaft from the driveshaft, an actuating connection between f said feed r011 shafts, a vertically-arranged cutter head positioned in operative relation i to the bed, and a driving connection at one I c se as mm between as" as s af and said vertical cutter head;
3. In a'planing'machine, the combination of a frame, a bedffarranged" atonef side of the frame, a cutter head and a feed roll extending across the bed, a shaft forthe cutter head journaled in b'earings in the sides of .the frame, a drive shaft, driving members respectively on the cutterhead andthe drive shafts, eachposi-tioned intermediate thesides of the frame, a flexible connection between said driving members, 'a shaft for the-feed roll arranged intermediate theshaftv-forvthe cutter head and the drive shaft and extend;-
ing transversely of thebed, a 'secondjshaft for a second feed roll between the shaftsfor the drive shaft and the other of said feed I rolls extending parallel to, the other shaft of said 7- feed rolls, sprockets arranged upon said feed roll shafts intermediate the'sides o'f'the, frame, anfactuating connection bes tween saidsprockets, abearing for Saidsec- 0nd shaft between its sprocket wheel andthe flexible connection between the driving members, .amember extending between the sidesf' ofthe frame carrying said bearing, said member having the portion extending across signature Y
