The invention relates to an improvement in bath and basin wastes the object being to provide a waste which maybe locked in the U open position and spring pressed to its closed position, so that the closing movement 1s practically automatm; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited' fiin the claims,

This casing 3is provided at its lower end where it opens into the waste pipe 5 with a seat 6 which is adapted to receive a tubular valve 7 the inv ner endf8 of which is beveled to closely fit the seat 6. 'This tubular valve 7 is'adjustably connected with a tubular valve stem 9 whichis formed near its upper end on opposite sides with cam slots, '10 and 11 into "which a pin 12 projects, this pin being mounted in the lower end of a spindle 13 which, is provided at its upper end with an operating handle 14. The bonnet also forms abearing for theupper end of the spindle Between the plate 15 and the bonnet'16 and surrounding the spindle 13 is a spring 18. ,Thevalve stem is also provided near its upper end with overflow openings 19. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings thewaste is closed; that is to say,

the end 8 of the valve 7 rests upon the seat 6 and consequently closestheupper end of the waste pipe 5, and this valve is held in its down position by the pressure of the spring 18 bearing upon "the upper end of the valve stem 9. To open the valve the handle 14 is turned inone direction or the othercausing the pin 12 to move in the oamslots 10 and lljf so as to' raise the valve ste1nf9 against thepressure of the spring 18 and lifts the valve 7 away from the seat '6'so as to open the upper end of the waste pipe 5. Asthe handle 14 completes-its movement,.the pin enters the straight portion of'the slots 10 and'll and thereby locks the valve stem in its raised position. Preferably the pin 12 will correspond substantially in diameter to the internal diameter of the tube 2 so asjto form a guide for the upper end of the valve stem andpreferably the locking collar 20 which looks the valve 7 with-the stem 9 is in the form of a spider as shown in Fig. 6, the ends of which co-actingwith the inner walls of the tube, form a guide for the lower end of the valve stem.

I thus provide in a very simple form a waste for baths and basins which when re leased. will spring downward to close the waste and which may be locked in its raised or open position.

, I claim 1. A bath or basin waste comprising a tube, a casing coupled with the lower end of said tube, said casing formed with a valve seat, a valve adapted to co-act with said seat, a tubular valve stem coupled with said valve, said valve stem formed with cam slots, a ro tatable spindle, a pin carried by the spindle nd entering said cam slots, and a spring bearing upon the upper end of thevalve stem and tending to force the valve to its said valve stem formed on opposite sides with cam slots,- & bonnet connected with the upper. end of the tube and adapted to sup{ port said tube, a flange also supported by 7 copies a; this patent may be obtained 151 the bonnet and adap ted to guide the upper end of said valve stem, a rotatable spindle 1 extending through said bonnet, a "pin. can ried by the lower end of said spindle and en gaging With said cam slots, and means for turning said spindle.
