To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in.

Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to educational devices and particularly to copy holders.

An object of the present invention is to provide means for holding copy and the instructions for using the same, associated with means for positioning and retaining the blank paper to be used by the student in writing to insure the said paper being retained in proper relation to the said copy in order that the copy may be constantly before the eye of the student and in order too that the result of the students efforts will be concealed to a great extent in order that the best writing, viz., the copy, may be constantly in the range of vision of the student; furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide means associated with the copy holder which will prevent the use of extensive areas of paper immediately in front of the copy so that movement of the paper is assured in order to present unwritten surfaces thereto into proper relation with the copy. To do this both ends of the blank paper are to be concealed.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the copy holder embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of the copy holder in folded position, looking at the underneath side thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 45 illustrates an enlarged detail view in side elevation of the copy holder showing a fragment of one of the arms.

In these drawings 5 denotes a head having a foot or support 6 preferably of rubber or other cushioning material at each end, which is adapted to rest on the desk and the sheet of paper 7 on which the student is to write is supposed to pass readily between these cushions. receiving strips of papers 9 containing on one slde the copy to be used by the student and on the other side directions for the use of the copy on the adjacent strip of paper, so that the instructions and the copy which are on different strips of paper may be open to view when one strip is removed from the other strip, it being observed that the head 5 has retaining hooks 9 which coact with the pintles 8, it being the purpose of the inventor to have the hooks 9 rotatably mounted or partially rotatably mounted in the head 5 by having the shank 11 of each hook project through the base and secured by the nut 12.

The base has at each end a plate 13 struck up to form a shoulder 14 and an arm 16 pivoted on each shank 11 may be swung on the pivot until it abuts the shoulder 14 in which relation of parts the arms 16 are parallel or approximately so. The outer portions of the arms 16 are bent back on themselves to form clips 17 adapted to hold a blotter 18 or other material designed to cover the sheet 7 on which the student is writing, thus limiting the area on which the student may Write to that between the inner edge of the blotter 18 and the inner edge of the head 5. It is the purpose of the invention that the student shall write only on that area of paper between the head and blotter prior to the sheet being moved upwardly under the head and blottor for the purpose of exposing further areas on which he may write and bringing that portion of the sheet on which he is to write directly beneath the copy held by the head for the purposes heretofore stated.

As shown in Fig. 2, the copy holder may be conveniently folded so that the arms lie parallel with the head and the device may be conveniently stored in a desk of the stu dent without requiring undue space.
