IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.

I, WESLEY W. SHERMAN, ofthe count-y ot' St.'

' Charles, in the State of Missouri, -have invented cerhad to the accompanying drawing and letters of ref-` erence marked thereon making part of this specifi'- cation.

Nature (tml Objects of the Invention.

My invention relates to certain improvements in portable fences; and

It consists principally in the construction and arrangement of the posts, caps, and braces as hereinafter described, thus making a cheapl and durable fence.

In the drawingf a represents the post or connection for the panels, and consists of two planks having triangular grooves 'on their outsides, near the top, for the rcceptionof the cap b, and notchedat the lower cud to receive the brace c.

On the in side of each plank and on opposite sides of the -notch the piece fis nailed, forming a lock or support for the panel.

b is the cap, which is a block of wood having in one side adovetail groove corresponding to the, grooves 'in the top ot' lthefpost, into Vwhich-it is slid, thusv sccurcly `retaining them in position.

c andfl designate the corner posts, grooved and `notchedlike post c, c having, also, a stripI cut off its edge from the top to ucar its center, terminating in an acute-angled notch, into which rests la shoulder forme'dou4 (Z by cutting a similar strip from the edgev fits/lower halt'. Another shoulder is made near the lower end ot' d, which rests upon the support g nailed te the bottom ot' c.

k is a plank constructed similarly to one section of post a, one of its etlges resting against the cent-er of (l, to which it is nailed at right angles, supporting the post4 and the ends of the adjoining panels which rest against it.

his a strip which serves as a support to the corner post and one end of the planks composing panel No. 2. rlhis post is held together at the top by the cap b, and also a hook aud staples, 'as shown in the drawing. s

c is a brace, which may be made from scantling ot' any desirable length and thickness. lhis brace has a deep notch out in its upper edge at center, and a groove of faire same width on eachv side, extending to the ground. The' notch and groove are intended to receive and firmly hold the notched posts a and c d, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawing. f The depth of the notch in the corner brace may bc increased by cutting a piece from its upper side, as seen in the drawing.

The block g, nailed to post c, is in one piece, and

supports the lower piank ofthe panel, besides strengthening the post'. Y

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement, in a portable fence, ot' the posts a, c, and d, caps b, braces e, supports f y hik, and the longitudinal planks, constructed as herein described.
