Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 12145 Application filed December 27, 1909. Serial No. 535,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Jenn M. Roster and J OHN HAWLEY TAUBSIG, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia in the county of Philadelphia and State Of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Process of Regulating the Temperature of Combustion, of which the following is a specification.
The principal objects of the present invention is to provide an improved process for the application of gaseous products of combustion to the control of the temperature of the products of combustion.
The process will be claimed at the end hereof, but will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings which show two of the many forms of apparatus in connection with which the invention may be practised.
In the drawings, Figure 1,,is a side view, partly in section, of a coal gas retort bench in connection with which the process of our invention can be ractised. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3, is a view, partly in longitudinal section, illustrating a modified construction of coal gas retort apparatus in connection with which the invention can be practised.
Referring to Fig. 2, a supply of com-.
bustible gas is maintained within the chamber 1, as shown, by generatin .it in that chamber and the path of trave of this gas is from chamber 1 through the passage 2 t0 the retort chamber 3. In the passage 2 the gas is ignited by the addition of secondary air and productsof combustion are thereafter added to it so as to control the temperature eifect, all as will be described. The flues 4 of the recuperator receive the prod nets of combustion from the chamber 3 and they range from front to back of the settin alternately and downward and connect wit-i the stack 5. Secondary air entering for example at s traverses the lines 6 of the recuperator and is introduced into the passage 2, causing ignition of the gas which is generated in the chamber 1 and permitting of its subsequent combustion in the retort chamber 3. Someof the products of combustion which would ordinarily pass to the stack are introduced as a diluent in the passage 2. This is accomplished by the passage 8 that leads to the tines 4 and to a specially provided'flu'e 9 that runs lengthwise and in the direction of the flues 4: and has communication by openings 10 with the passage 2, beyond the zone or region of ignition. In the flue 9, an injector 11 is shown which serves to insure the passage of products of combustion from the flue 4: through the passage 8 to the passage or flue 9 and hence by the openings 10 to the passage 2. This injector may be operated by steam or by air, or by any appropriate means. As a matter of fact the injector is merel illustrative of some appliance for intro ucing products of combustion. t are fines which by the ports deliver air into the chamber 1 for use in generating gas from suitable fuel arranged in the chamber 1.
In Fig. 3, the fluid combustible is generated in a roducer 12, which constitutes a separate piece of apparatus from the retort bench and may be common to a number of retort benches. In this construction gas from the roducer 12 enters the chamber 1, instead oi being generated in that chamber, otherwise the construction and mode of operation is the same as has been described in connection .with Figs. 1 and 2; that is to i 7 are arranged in the cham- What We claim is: 1 In testimony whereof we have hereunto The rocefss ofbregulatin tlzhe temperasigned our names. ture e eat 0 com ustion w ic consists inburning "a mixture of undiluted airand un- 'TAUSSIG diluted homogeneous producer gas, and adding to the burning roducts thereof a diluent Witnesses: consisting of incom ustible products of com- H.
