To all whom it may concern A Be it known that I, CHARLES H. REUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoxie, in the county of Sheridan and State ofKansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Raising or Lowering Pump-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for raising and lowering pump pipes and sucker rods, the object of the invention being to provide a construction of apparatus of this character which will efiectivelylift a pipe or rod with a minimumamount of power, and which will include means for positively holding or looking the pipe or rod against accidental falling during the l0weringoperpipe to a. predetermined position to cause the dog to immediately respond and effectively grip the pipe and thereby prevent the further movement of the same in one direc- C1011; a a

In describing the apparatus, it is said that a suitable frame such as that illustrated at 1 isemployed, the same being so constructed that it'can be readily mounted upon the platform of the well drilling machine, not shown. At the lower end, the frame is provided with a horizontal bar 2 on which is mounted the fixed jaw 3 and the adjustable jaw 4:, the latter being designed to cooperate with the jaw 3 so as to define therewith an Specification of Letters Patent. By forming the slot 22 as shown, the clamp 20 is provided with spaced fingers 24 which I are partly embraced by the hook like ends 25 of the removable keeper or retainer plate 26. l Cotter pins or suitable fastening devices 27 ;are removably fitted to the fingers 24 and are designed to hold the plate 26 against accidental displacement. The plate 26 is :provided with an arcuate wall 28 which ;is disposed directly opposite the sharp edge 23'0f the clamp so as to define therejwith an intervening passage for movement therethrough of the pipe or rod. A similar clamp 29 is pivoted at 30 to the links 18,
the former being disposed above the clamp :20 and having formed therein a slot 31 whose end Wallis beveled downwardly and outwardly in an opposite direction to the 29 carries a relatively short hook 84 to Y which is removably connected the lower end of the coiled spring 30, the upper end of said spring being fixedly secured to the eye member 35 on the operating lever 16 and at a point thereon inwardly of thelink 18.
. The clamp 20 carries a relatively long hook 36 which is removably fitted to the lower end of the coiled spring 37, the latter being also secured at its upper end to the lever 16, inwardly of the link 19, as shown. 7
The operation is as follows for raising a pipe or rod: A pipe or rod is operatlvely fitted in the upper and lowerguides of the frame and in the slots in the clamps 20 and 29 and the latter disconnected from 13 springs 30 and 37. Now, by rocking the lever 16 up and down the clamps 20 and 29 will be alternately moved toward and away from each other, the sharp edges 23 and 32 of the clamps being brought alternately into gripping engagement with the pipe to thereby cause the latter to moveupward. When lowering the pipe, the springs 30 and 37 are connected with the clamps and under the tension .of the springs, the clamps will be alternately made to grip the pipe only on their downward movement, there being sufficient play between the clamps to permit the step by step like fall of the pipe as the lever 16 is rocked. When lowering the pipe it is essential that means be employed for preventing the pipe fromslipping-and for causing the positive gripping of the lower clamp 20 against the pipe prior to the release of the clamp 29 therefrom, .and in view thereof I provide a substantially bell-crank lever 38 which is pivoted at 39 to the frame 1. This lever has the free end of the arm 10 disposed above the plate 26. The arm 41 of this lever -is provided with a lug 42 through which the adjusting screw 43 extends. A retractile spring 44. connects the arm 40 of'the lever with the bar 2 of the frame 1 so that the free end of the arm 10 will be engaged against the keeper plate 26 on a predetermined movement of the levg 16 in a downward direction. One end of the screw 43 bears against one of the side members of the frame 1 and the screw is thereby capable of Operation to vary the tension on the spring 14: as the occasion may demand.

As means to prevent the sudden fall of the pipe into the well in the event of the failure of the clamps 20 and 29 to respond properly, I provide a pivoted locking dog46 upon the bar 2 of the frame 1. This dog is yieldingly held upwardly at an angle to the bar 2 through the medium ofthe spring 48.
