Specification of Letters Patent.
raeearea sept. is, 'isis Application filed July 9, 1913. Serial No. 778,051.
To all whom t may concern Be it known tliatl, HniNiiioH VVALDES, i subject of the Emperor of ustriadlungary, and residing at lVrschowitf/i, near Prague, Bohemia, Austrian Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Feeding Mechanisms for Button-Sewing Machines. of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The parts of spring pressed buttons are now'not usually sewn onto material formingr the closure, but are attached toa strip of material or tape. which is then sewn on sure.l
The button parts are attached by means 0f sewing machines of the known kind, the needle of which passes through the holes of the button piece and sews the same on to the strip.
Now the present invention consists of means for feeding the parts of the spring pressed button at regular intervals to the sewing machine, under the need-le and means for transporting the strip or tape to which the button parts are to be sewn, a certain eac-h button part.
In the accompanying drawings `which illustrate one fornA of eii'ibodying the present inventioinlfigure l. is a side elevation of the'device, Fig. 2a plan, Fig. 3 a rear elevation, Fig. l a side elevation of the means for clamping and transporting1 the for feeding the button part, Fig. 6 a front intermittently operating the device, Fig. 7
showing the The sewing machine itself is not illustrated, the axis of the same being indicated in Fig. 2 by means of the line 1.
A shaft 3 (Fig. l) is mounted on the Work table ofthe sewing machine' and driven from the main shaft Q of the latter y means of chain gearing. By means of buttons and transporting` the strip is op tween the boss of the chain wheel 4f and 4shaft 3. i A collar 8 is provided .23 and opens up into the shaft 3 and illustrated in Figs. (l, 27, 8
i u i and 9. The coupling consists oi a bolt 5 of segmental cross section and adapted to i rotate in a groove of the shaft 3. Thisbolt 5 lies partly in the groove but is capable, when turned axially to into one of a series of recesses l0 formed in thev boss of the chain wheel 4 and when in this position to couple the latter to the on the shaft 3 and the bolt 'lias a radial arni G adapted to turn through an arc limited by a recess 7 in said collar, in which the said arm lies. fijcontractile spiral si'ning 9 is lconnected at one end to the pin 8 on the collar S fixed to the shaft 3 and at the other end to the radial arm (S and operates to normally hold said arm against one side of the recess 7 iii the position in which it is shown in Fig. ln this position the segmental bolt above the periphery of the shaft 3 and engages the hub of the chain wheel at yand locks it to the shaft. 'A sliding stud 1l is mounted in the machine frame as best shown in Fig. l. A. bell crank lever 12 disposed on a. pivot stud i2 engages a stud l1 on said sliding stud 1l for thrusting the latter'` into the path of the arm G and retracting it therefrom. A. horizontal lever 13 pivoted on a bracket-13 ends with the other arm of the bell crank lever l2. A rod 132 connects the inner end of the lever fil-3 with the sewing machine mechanism not shown. lVhen the sliding sind `l1 is thrust into the path of the arm 6 and the turning of the shaft 3 brings said arm into contact with said stud, the arm is held stationary until the parts assume the position shown in l? 8, whereby the segmental holt 5 is turned so that it is flush with the periphery of the shaft 3 or lentirely wit-hin the groove thereof, and the chain wheel 4. is then free to turn loosely on the shaft 4. i
Cam disks are mounted lon the shaft one of which 14 operates to reciprocate a hai' lil by means of a double arni lever l5. The bar 1.6 carries stops 17,"18 between which the bifnrcated arm l) of a pivotally mounted bell crank lever engages. The other arm 20 of the latter engages by a fork and pin connection with a slide 2l moving in a guide way 2Q of aplate. This guidewayl serves for the reception one by one of the buttons gi i deway 24V lying at right angles to the same and formed in the plate 2. having mounted therei` a movable'slidc 9.(3. rlhe latter is provided with au upwardly cxtendii'ig pin 12,7 adaptedto extend with one edge 5 projects l is connected at its outer,
65 theshaft 3 to engage the bifurcated endof an arm 29 pivotally 'supported on theoar. 165.- and depressed by means of a 'spring' 28. :'.This' arm 29, moves with the barl Iand alsopasses along a cam surface 30 at the side ofH one of the., grooves forming the guidewa '24, so
. that, on the "rearward movement o -the bar 16,-it lwill be raised by the said cam surface end release thev pin 2'( ofthe slide 26, allow- 1'0 the latter to remain stationary. In this stationaryjposition'pf theslide 26, the ends i ofthe two' guideways 22 and 24 open up one into 'the other',.so thatthe button 23 may be pushed fromlthe-'groove 22 'into the groove of themachneby the `slide 26 which has in the. meantime beenfmoved forward again. As'they bar v16`. moves'-forward the arm 29 .l s lidesldown''lthe'cam surface '30' and a ain The seondfc disk 32 ofthe shaft 3 operates horizontally guided rod 34 by means ofa 'slotted rocking lever 33 and 'a slide 'rod 35. The rod. 34 is'connected by means-.of a, bracket a'rm 36 (Fig. 4) 'to a slide 37 guided in a guideway 38 of a plate 30 39 attached .to thefbase plate of the device.
The slide 37 passes .through aslot of a sec ond slide 40 a so guided in the plate 39, and zada ted Ito support `the strip' 41y to which the uttons are to be sewn'.
yThe'slde 37 is provided with an upwardly extending nose42 `(Fig. 3) which is located between "a bearing 43 on the slide 40 and a downwardly extending finger 44 mounted onone end fof a double llever ivotally supported in the said bearing an the opposite end of which carries a -cla'm ing piece 45 adapted to press. on the sli'e 40` andI to clamp the ystrilp 41 thereto, so that it will be moved' with t e slide.' 4 l 45 Thus ifthe rod 34 is moved backwardly the nose 42 of slide37 will Contact with the finger 44 a'ndfclamp the strip 41 to thesslide 40. yOn the further movement of the rod 34 the strip'will he moved a distance A correspondirg to the` distance a art of the buttons." s the rod 34 per orms its return movement the nose 42 will release the finger 44,' thefpres'ser or clampin piece is raised from the vstrip', which latter asin the meantime been retained by the presser foot of the.l sewing 4machine and the nose 42 then 'engages the bearin v43 and on further movement returns the s ide .to its 'initial position.
The two mechanisms above described cof.
,y 0 erate in the .following mannerz--Fg` 2 s owe the parts in their resective positions' just as the coupling of t y to' come into engagement anda button has been sewn on tqhthe band. The coupling of t e chain wheel 4 `is,.ef ec'ted jeansfoffthe aijrrl, 20 of the bell crank"` lever, inorder`tof`be `passed under the needle' 'mg machine and for intermittent e shaft 3 is' by the arm 6 under the action of the' 'sprin' 9 after the withdrawal ofthe slid", std
11. At the Sametime the needle sewing machine was.raisedandwthestrip ire leased. The'shaft 3 is conseqiientlylrotated I,XJ thus turning the cam disks 14V and bar 16 and rod-3 4 are each reciproctdlo e" during the vengagement .of `the "members 4 1and 5. The .reci rocation of t,l1e.p,arts and 34 causes a resh .buttonto the machine and simultaneously"eifect'f,l transport of the strip. In orderltc'i to adJust the transport of theystriv ,th 34 is connected .tothe end oftiielion y lcver 33 by meansfof a screw and, Slotff 30 nection 46 (Fig.y 3 so that thev length? off. transport may be a' justed.
